[PASSED] Times Act
#21

So, I'm not neccesarily opposed to this, but how come Glen's bill was bad and "antagonistically American" when...most of the people in this region are from North America? And then this is being accepted by everyone even though it actually is less convenient for more people?

UTC is fairer than EST/EDT.

How so? A majority of our Legislators live in North America. Non-EDTers can just convert via googling it (like us North Americans always do), or via other mentioned time zones in the post, which Glen specifically mentioned in the bill.

Nakari addressed this on Discord using the most recent survey information she could find. There isn't a majority of North American players (12/29 surveyed), only a plurality and even when you add in South and Central America (14/29 surveyed), it's only just a majority. That's no really a good basis for deviating from an international standard.

The region isn’t designed for North Americans, it’s open to everyone. Let’s not give a false impression that unless you’re North American you have to do the extra work of converting. It’s best to use UTC and let everyone convert to their time zone.

Let's also not conflate "North American" with "Eastern time". A majority of Americans live in a timezone that's not EST/EDT.

Then there's the part where not everybody in North America is from the US.  Canada and the US have the most time zones, sharing most of the offsets with a few exceptions.  Mexico only has two time zones, both are analogous to Canadian/US offsets.

I really believe that a countdown clock would do much more for convenience than any time zone. Every time zone is going to be halfway around the world for somebody, but a countdown clock would be convenient for everyone.

I do like the fact that Belschaft's bill includes New York, London, and Sydney time though. If there's a site that provides automatic conversion to local time, that would be even better, but I know the site Belschaft linked allows users to do that in a couple clicks.

Great solution. This bill is more akin to a band-aid. While I support the bill, a countdown clock seems to be the solution to the problem.

Just for the sake of clarity here my understanding is that the bill already includes a countdown timer? I probably should have said that I like the fact it includes both the timer and the links to conversions.
