Toratu Space Center
Department for Space Communication - Sleeping Area

"Beep, Beep, Beep, Beep, Beep, Beep, Beep"
Todda Koßßoßß immediately began to groan, because he was half-awake for hours already. His body could not decide, whether it wanted to stay in bed or rather jump out of it.
On the one hand today was his big day. Finally he was allowed to try to send a message to outer space, where he and his colleagues are expecting more sentient and highly-developed species to exist. If the message was answered, he would have reached his life's goal at the age of just 39! And also he would become as famous as Marok ßennerra - she was the one, who made first contact with the Nuclearians around 1800 years ago.
On the other hand he was just so tired, tired of everything. He gave up his entire life up until now to pursue this career in the Toratu Space Center, focusing on intergalactic communication. The branch was not the highest developed one. The Atlantics still worked with rather archaic means. Electromagnetic waves, which reach light speed for sure, but without a strong transmitter no potential living being could catch up a signal.
Now the Atlantics have the strongest transmitter there was ever made, designed by him, but it's still not perfect. This bothered him, because he already saw with his inner eyes, that he will not be succesful, just like all the scientists before him. They will send this wave and then he will wait for his death. His intellect gone to waste, the best years of his life also.
"Everything will only go downhill from here until I peacefully go to sleep at age 130...", he muttered to himself, before finally turning off the alarm.

Eventually he got up and took a look around the room. The walls are out of relatively thick glass - actually it is just one wall, because the room could be described as shaped like a handegg. A little stretch upwards, some to the side, then Todda went for his desk, where a glass of water shall help him getting rid of his morning thirst and this weird taste in his mouth. A decision against a morning workout followed soon after, so he basically only put on some fresh clothes and combed his hair before leaving his little "private" area and walking to his office again.

He plumps into his good old swivel chair, an antique piece of furniture he was gifted by his university back when he graduated as the best student of the last century, and logged in into his computers. With that the "Do not disturb" mode of the chip in his head was deactivated. Immediately a call came in from one of his engineers.
"Morn-g, how's this thing....uhm...here....the satellite-thingy. Is everything ready?", he asked.
"Of course. At least almost. We couldn't add the transmitter to our satellite while you were asleep, because the crew forgot their tools and....also the satellite somehow wasn't staying in its place and...", answered the engineer, but he was interrupted.
"Oh, so stuff is moving around planets or stars e.g., because of gravity? And tools are so hard to find, right? Are you kidding me or do you all think, I'm dumb or what? You don't do your job correctly, get out of here with your excuses!"
The engineer apologised and informed Todda the crew will go up again in an hour.
"Just call me, when I can send out this message, alright?", Todda said and hung up.

Three hours later, the scientist laid down on his office's floor staring at the ceiling, the engineer was calling again.
"Now everything's set up." Again Todda just hung up and got on his computer. In a matter of seconds he was on the page, which will be used to send out the signal. He would only need to drag the file with the message to the outer world with his other hand to the page and then it will be sent out.
So that's what he did. And it was done. An electromagnetic wave of several thousand yottawatt, maybe even more, was emitted into outer space. A wave, which has a coded message woven inside of it, in Atlantic and in Austral: "Hello unknown, this message comes from Toratu, ANF. We are here."

"Wow....That was exciting", Todda said sarcastically. His mission was done. He had nothing to do anymore, except for contemplating whether this short moment was really worth it all the hassles he had to go through in life. He decided to lay on the ground and stare at the ceiling again.

Todda eventually sat down in the following years to find ways to send data faster-than-light eventually. But he will die at age 118 in the end, with his original message never being answered during his lifetime. It took 943 years for the message to be picked up in the Old Ryccian Empire.

Ronhe, Vonlataias, Ryccian Empire
Kalpier Asteroid Belt Research Station
Border with the Vonmisian Order, 2009 BDR

Captain Lily Vanauz was in charge of this supposed "research station" which was, in reality, an Imperial military reconnaissance base against the Southern Alliance of the Vonmisian Order and the Vurbentan Dominion, two star nations which opposed the Ryccian Empire's expansionism and constantly competed for influence and territory. There were rumours from spies that the Velpan Grand Authority was planning to join the SA into a new Triple Alliance, as they were hostile to the Ryccians as well, but this was not certain.

The Vonmisian Order and the Velpan Grand Authority had the most reason to hate the Ryccians, as the Empire had captured their outermost territories in the Punitive War. Due to the interference of the Vonmisians, a civil war had erupted in the Empire between two claimants to the throne. Once it was discovered that one of the pretenders, Imperial Prince Adrian, was being supported by foreign powers, his supporters switched sides and helped the other, Imperial Princess Luxia, defeat the treacherous Adrian.

The Vonmisians had four main motives to covertly interfere in the Ryccians' civil war: first, they were not fools, for the Empire to their north was highly militaristic and extremely xenophobic. Fearing a conquest by these lunatics to their north, the Vonmisians decided to sow chaos to weaken them for the forseeable future. Second, the Ryccians were the most technologically-advanced nation in their periphery, and thus they hoped that an Emperor amenable to Vonmisian interests would share some of the Ryccians' advancements in weaponry. Third, the territory the Ryccians held was rich in minerals and industrial output, and thus the Vonmisians wished to encourage trade favourable towards them by helping install this pretender. Fourth and finally, the Vonmisians wished to curb Ryccian expansionism, as they did not wish for their bellicose neighbour to become far too powerful to counter.

This backfired spectacularly against the Vonmisians, as the new Empress Luxia, in order to secure her position by uniting the country, declared war on the Vonmisian Order. As the Velpans were allied to the Vonmisians, they were forced to commit to the defense of their allies.

To everyone's surprise, the Ryccians managed to defeat both nations at the same time, seizing dozens of systems from them and demanding war reparations as punishment. This war scared the Velpans so badly that their leadership became increasingly hesitant to oppose the Ryccians, even if they were furious that they took Velpan colonies. This war also caught the attention of the age-old rival of the Vonmisians, which was the Vurbentan Dominion. Fearing that the Ryccians would crush both themselves and the Vonmisians in the future, both countries joined in a Southern Alliance to counter these hostile conquerors.

Tensions were running high as they always were, and, in less than thirty years into the future, Ryccian technological progress and another war would see the complete subjugation and conquest of both the Vonmisian Order and the Vurbentan Dominion. This was still yet to occur, however, and thus the Ryccians were a great power in their corner of space, but they could still have been extinguished if everything had gone wrong.

"M'am, we are detecting a strange signal!"

"Whatever could it be? Patch it through"

The station's crew began to hear a strange message. It was in...English? What?!

"Hello *kzzkh* unknown, this message comes from Toratu, ANF. We are here"

*Kzzzkh*

"..."

"Captain, shall we-"

"No one leaves this station without the authorization of the Imperial Court. Get me a signal to Daonlathas, immediately!"

After a few hours of pleading and attempting to obtain an audience with someone high enough to merit the attention of such crucial information, they finally got through. The Prince-Imperial Marcus, a Grand Admiral in the Imperial Navy and a close confidant of the Empress, responded.

"Do tell, Captain, why are you wasting the Imperial Court's time with your presence?"

"Your Imperial Highness, I have something I must show you. It is of the upmost importance"

Captain Vanauz began transmitting the strange message it had received from a far-off place. She also sent the coordinates of where the message might have originated from.

".......I see. None of you are permitted to speak a word regarding this matter for as long as you live, lest you wish a death by ten thousand cuts for high treason. I shall send my personal ship to extract you myself"

The Prince-Imperial arrived two weeks later, personally executing every single member of the research station with the trusted Royal Guard, for, after all, they were expendable. No one could know what happened here, nor what came from there.

The Imperial Court then debated this new message. It was decided that this would be kept top-secret and passed down only to a select few members of the aristocracy, as the Empire did not possess the sufficient technological prowess to venture so far out into the unknown. No one could know.

No one could know that there might be other humans out there in the distant stars.

In his deathbed, the aged late Emperor Joseph had told the now-Empress Alexandria of the secret that only a few were privy to. The ANF message.

Alexandria was alarmed. However, she was also curious, and, being aware of new developments in hyperspace technology, she ordered a secret expedition to be dispatched towards the coordinates of this "ANF" entity.

Thus, an Imperial diplomatic mission consisting of one Glorious-class Star Destroyer and three Hammerhead-class corvettes arrived at this Toratu Space Center. Princess-Imperial Williana was heading the small diplomatic team and tried to contact anyone in her fleet's vicinity. It appeared to be located in a planet, and thus she was certain there was some life down there.

1800 BDR, 2870 NC, 17,220 SC
Royal Palace, Toratuoßß, Toratu

The Atlantic King, Karra XVI, was unsuspecting of the situation brewing just outside the atmosphere of the planet. Likewise was the general population and all journalists, that informed him of the latest news via hologram.
"Can you imagine that? They finally have their first real breakthrough in copying ones brain and compressing the data to a minimum!", one of them said from the planet Ut told him.
"Interesting. What does that mean exactly?", the king asked.
"Well, this basically means we got a way better understanding of the brain than ever before. Millennia of research finally pay off! We might be able to improve our technologies in the fields of telepathy and universal translation and..."
- "Does that also mean, we could improve ourselves in the field of manipulating people?", the king sternly interrupted.
"I mean, theoretically, but that's not the goal of our scientists of course...", the journalist tried to save the conversation from becoming ugly, unfortunately without success.
- "We are a democratic federation and those companies only waited for such a moment. We have to stop those technological advancements immediately, otherwise the ANF will not exist for long anymore. Thank you for informing me about this dangerous development!"

Karra hung up and changed to another holo-call, that just came in.
"My majesty, something cruel will happen soon!", the caller began the conversation.
- "Calm down, what are you talking about?"
"There are...aliens out there...", the caller said. The king had to laugh out loud. "What the hell are you talking about? The only aliens we know are the Nuclearians and some are talking about having seen ships at our borders, but they were probably just pirates from Ut or whatever. I don't think you need to worry. Maybe you should take some days off?"

When the caller heard that, his face immediately turned bright-red. He did not want to "take some days off", especially as everyone knew, this was just an euphemism for being imprisoned. "No, mylord, I mean it. Here, look!", the front camera of the caller's holo-device was turned towards the sky. Next to the sun, barely visible, one could see four weirdly-looking black dots. The camera turned back to the caller's face. "The scientists in the space centre also said, they receive weird signals. They seem to be in a weird Austral accent."
Now Karra became worried too. Were they encountering a superiour species, which observed them for a while, got the code for the Austral language and now wanted to kill everybody?
"What are they saying?", he asked.
"I don't know, the scientists are still working on getting a better signal from the UFOs, but we need to prepare everyone for the worst..."
- "I see."
The King was closing his eyes and sat down on his throne for a moment. His thoughts went to his daughter, who he has not seen for at least two decades. He wished, he could take her into his arms once again, before they all will die. A tear wanted to roll down his face, but a deep breath was enough to hold it back.

"Let's warn the population and get it into the bunker. You can inform everyone, I will be at the space centre in a few minutes and want to listen to the message myself."
On the entire planet the emergency sirens and programs went off, screams and shouts could be heard everywhere.
"Please find the nearest bunker. This is not an exercise. Weeeeeeeeeeee-ooooooooohhhhhhhh", the sirens and TTS-appliances repeated over and over again in every city, in every household, all over Toratu and its nearest planetary neighbours.

Toratu Space Center

Within 10 minutes the king arrived in the laboratory of the Space Communication Department of the Toratu Space Center. The scientists bowed down for a moment, before letting him pass through the crowd, that gathered, up to the front, where something similar to a radar was showing the incoming signal, its strength and where it roughly came from. The sources of the signal were relatively huge, he noticed.
"What are we dealing with here?", he asked the head scientist Nora.
"After short observations by colleagues, we are certain, that those things are ships by aliens, we have not encountered yet. The designs are not similar to any of the ones we have gotten to know up until now and they are definitely not ours", she answered. "By far not as beautiful, quite more intimidating", she added in a whisper.
"What shall we do now?", was her next question.

Karra pondered about his upcoming actions for a few seconds before answering: "I want to talk to them."
Nora nodded and gave free the way to the computer, which controls the message-transmitter - a Todda X34.
He activated the audio-mode and recorded the following message on Atlantic, which was translated into Austral by the program immediately:

"This is the King of Atlantis, one of the heads of the ANF. We do not want to harm you, so please explain what you are doing in our galactic space. We will not refrain to use force against you, if needed."
He laid the microphone down onto the table and waited. "If they have decided to destroy us, they will do so now independent from what I've said. If they have not decided for themselves to follow this strategy yet, they at least know, we won't give ourselves up without a fight...", he said in a low-kept voice to Nora next to him.

Some Toratu Space Center, ANF?
1800 BDR

"Hmm...it appears they do not remember they were the entity that sent the message. It is to be expected, for they transmitted it 1,152 years ago"

"Your Imperial Highness, how should we respond?"

"Patch me to the communicator, immediately. This is the Princess-Imperial Williana of the great Ryccian Empire. We wish no quarrel with you, only dialogue. Allow me to visit your planet, for we wish to know how you obtained knowledge of our human language"

"Their human language?"
Karra was confused, as were many of the scientists in the room, who began to suddenly whisper to each other. A whispering tsunami of words has filled the room, what made it difficult for the king to think properly.

Were they bluffing? They only wanted to come down on the ground to let their soldiers go on a killing spree. Maybe they want to take over his planet, that's why they don't use a planet-destroyer-device, which is in development in a secret lab on the 100th underground floor of this center...Wait, what if they find out and use the research against them soon, because they are more advanced? On the other hand, they might not be as advanced, otherwise they would have just destroyed the planet already, wouldn't it be like that?

"You may enter the airspace of Toratu. We are happy to welcome you", Nora said suddenly.
"What are you doing?", the king asked flabbergasted.
"Well, we here at the communication department have as our highest priority to establish first contacts with alien species. If they want to converse with us, we should let them", argued Nora.
"But what if they kill all of us and just use 'dialogue' as a pled reason?", the king interrogated her further.
"Well, I've got a gut feeling, they will not."
She smiled at him, but he was furious internally. Now he needed to accept the decision, because pictures from airspace control were showing, the guests were on their way down on the planet already.

"You know, what happens if your gut feeling is false", he just answered with a rough voice, before leaving the building to wait for the ANF's new "friends".

Toratu, ANF?
1800 BDR

The royal shuttle, with a small fighter escort, began to land at this alien world. As she saw what was before her, the Princess-Imperial was initially confused, but soon her confusion gave way to a seething and passionate fury. How could they?!

"YOU! ALL OF YOU! Traitors to the Imperial crown! How dare you serve inferior lifeforms as their subjects! You dare kowtow to aliens and speak to me, a high-born royal, as their representatives and as if we were equals?! If it were not for whoever is protecting you, I would have had you executed for your insolence! Have the decency to tell me who you are so I can have your families back in the Empire executed in your stead!"

"I shall not speak with those beneath my rank! Where are those who you truly serve?! If you must act as translators for your alien overlords, so be it, but I refuse to address you as an equal, for you have no privilege nor Imperial grace to even look at me in the eyes! Take me to those you are subservient to, NOW, or step aside! I shall look for them MYSELF IF NECESSARY!"

The Princess-Imperial was enraged beyond belief. A concoction of aristocratic arrogance, extreme xenophobia and loyalty to the crown made her act this way. After all, humans come from the Ryccian Empire. They are native to Daonlathas. Did these treacherous subjects to the crown defect? Were they kidnapped or bribed to serve an inferior race? How insulting!

She did not realize the grave error she had committed, for she was unaware of the truth. These were humans, yes, but these were not Ryccians.

King Karra, Nora and a couple more scientists went out of the Space Center and watched one of the ships land. Some of the Atlantics were afraid, the guests would damage the building heavily, but whoever conducted this vehicle surely knew well how to do so, because the overworld of the periphery did not even receive one small scratch by this huge machine.

Universal translators were handed out, because Karra wouldn't be able to understand the new species, if they spoke English. If they spoke another language, the translator could not help either, but it would at least try to figure out everything in real time. When the Princess-Imperial left the ship and looked sternly at the new-found life she found, quite a few scientists in the background bowed to her. Karra and Nora did not, not even when she started going into a lengthy rage.

When Karra thought, she was finished talking, he moved his mouth to form an answer, but the words did not gush out of him. He was too amazed to see, that in front of him are persons, that looked fairly like him and his colleagues.
Most of his colleagues at least - the colleagues that were around here and are not located on other planets.

"Let....Let me welcome you to Toratu, one of the main planets of the Atlantic-Nuclearian Federation - ANF for short. My name is King Karra XVI, one of the co-kings of the federation you are currently visiting.
I'm afraid, I am not able to tell you, who we all serve. The persons surrounding me serve me and my Nuclearian colleague. We also are not aware of any treacherous activities from our side to any empire. In fact, I have never heard such a word....'empire'".

Karra actually needed to ponder about the word for a second. He has heard of the word - a very, very long time ago. Was it history class back in....4th grade at the royal school? They learnt about the Type-0-civilisations that lived on Pacifica like the Gianlucian Empire, the Frost Empire and the Ryccian Empire. Cordilia was that continent called, wasn't it? He innerly chuckled about that. Continents allegedly were so big and vast once and now an entire planet is feeling like one big city.

His thoughts were interrupted by the space-faring Princess again.

King?! What nonsense is this?! This traitor dares to call himself a King?!

"Do you take me for a fool, Mr. Karra?! What kind of imbecile do you believe me to be?! You owe one and only one loyalty and obedience, and that is to the Emperor and the Ryccian Empire!...Fine, do what you must. If you intend to lie to me, so be it. It is clear that you have been endowed with some power to represent your master, and thus I shall oblige. Servant, come here, posthaste!"

The human servant, Karien Lauvoreur, approached. As a commoner, she was forced to show the upmost reverence, even ignoring first-person pronouns as if she did not even exist.

"Your servant is here, Your Imperial Highness"

"You are to speak in my stead. I shall whisper my statements so you may relay them to this person. I refuse to communicate directly with someone beneath my status. Consider this a merciful display of Imperial grace, Mr. Karra"

With the ridiculous and aristocratic derision characteristic of Ryccian royalty, the Princess-Imperial also ordered her palanquin to be used, as she refused to walk with this pretentious "King" Karra as an equal or a superior in rank. Both Ms. Lauvoreur and the Princess-Imperial got on it and her remaining entourage began to lift the palanquin so they could move it, and one of them also began to carry a vertical royal banner.

The Princess-Imperial began to whisper to her servant. In her stead, she replied to this King.

"Her Imperial Highness wishes to go to wherever it is you receive diplomats for discussions, for she wishes to talk about how this 'ANF' entity came into being"

Karra nodded. "We will go into the building you are seeing in front of you", he said and started walking into this direction, making sure the messenger went alongside him, so more details can be mentioned to the princess.

"This is the Toratu Space Center, where we also received your signals from. We can talk about any questions your people might have in there, as well as show, how we contacted you and vice versa. If you want to prepare your superiour, of course the rooms in there are not fancy in any way. We were not exactly expecting alien visitors today, so we cannot offer any prepared rooms. That's why we go to a place, where most questions can hopefully get answered in a neutral environment."

The entourage - Karra, the messenger, the princess with her servants, Nora and the scientists - flocked into the building. From outside it looks like a huge dark grey skyscraper mainly out of metal, with some glass elements, inside - to a newcomer's eventual surprise - everything was clean and white. It almost looks like the walls and floors are out of marble, even though they are not.
Karra, Nora and the guests turned left into a huge hallway and after a good three minutes of walking through a void, they eventually arrived in a meeting room. The walls plastered with computer displays, in every corner of the room lush green plants with rather pointy leaves, in the middle a long white desk with 30 chairs all around it. The chairs set itself apart by being completely black. The design of the furniture was inspired by the so-called "1920s style" of the elite, which became popular in recent years again. Of course the ergonomics of the chairs and the table have become better, as designers pay attention to this more nowadays than when humanity was still a Type-0-species.

Karra offered the princess to sit at the head end of the table, while he will seat himself at the foot end. He thought, this gesture might lead to the princess breaking her silence. Nora and the messenger were placed somewhere in the middle. The other scientists were hushed away, the guards of the princess and the "banner lord" were asked to stand by the door.

An uncomfortable silence spread around the room. The princess did not want to talk, Karra did not know where to start and was not eager to do anything, that could be considered a mistake, Nora, the messenger and the servants were probably just observing the situation.
Suddenly Nora spoke first, in a very friendly voice: "Mylady, my name is Nora and I am one of the head scientists below the King, leader of the communications department of this science center. Before we start, because I am sure you have many questions, may I ask, if you feel well or is our atmosphere and oxygen saturation getting to you in some way?"
