Abolish the Ministry of Media
#11

As a candidate in the MoM election, will you commit to abstaining in the MoM election?

Sure, news and media services could definitely be run independently. However, have you considered that SPINN posts very irregularly and is most active around the time of Cabinet elections like this?

Why do you believe the forum should have been used by the incumbent minister, and what volume of its target audience do you believe consumes media in this that format?

The Ministry of Media has existed for eight months. The fact that not a single thread has been created in it's dedicated public forum is indicative of the wider problems which I believe exist.

No. The Assembly as a whole votes on who it wishes to form the Cabinet, and as a member of the Assembly my individual vote is a fundamental democratic right and my exercise of that right a fundamental democratic principle.

Yes, because the person who currently runs SPINN is interested in elections - and they are genuinely newsworthy. A player interested in other issues could produce different news content, or someone else with an interest in elections could produce competing coverage.

I'll go on record and say that I agree the Ministry of Media should probably abolished. I would definitely like to see TSP do something like NS.Today, and I thought maybe having a Cabinet ministry would actually spur the development of a major, professional media outfit. But it hasn't, and I'm not sure it ever will.

I'm not going to go back through my posts when those ministries would being created, and see if I'm being consistent here or anything. My opinions as they stand today are that:
1. A ministry dedicated to TSP-produced media is probably only useful for producing propaganda. Unfortunately, propaganda isn't very useful in today's Gameplay environment. Nobody cares about the roleplaying aspect, they'd all just go right past it into the meta-game of NSGP, so the efforts put into would be lost.
2. Political and feature writing are in tension with being part of the government. The ministry has an automatic conflict of interests when writing about the government. This tends to lead to more feature work, which is mostly interviews. There are no interesting interviews that have happened in NS in many, many years. If feature work is all that's going to be possible, then it needs to be long-form and truly interesting perspectives on different aspects of NS, TSP, etc. That doesn't work well in a ministry format, where the 4-month term length incentives quantity over quality.
3. TSP's independent media has produced more and higher quality than 2 terms of government media. That kind of speaks for itself.

Not saying I agree with abolition, but I'd like to comment on/add to this note. NST is really like a platform more than anything in my view. We do have a corporate structure, and maybe @Somyrion could explain some stuff better, but it's not the most consistent body. People contribute when they feel like it, and contribution is certainly not even between all staff members. Since I joined on February 15th of this year, 16 articles have been published. 5 by Llorens, 4 by myself, 2 by Lime, and 1 by 5 other individuals.

Without a doubt, especially since Llorens retired from management, Somyrion is the primary contributor to management and editing in my opinion. I think it's possible to salvage the ministry while taking this approach of functioning like a structured platform. "Media" can mean platforming our citizens and honing their skills in writing and encouraging involvement in those fields. Naturally, it does of course require a very involved Minister who is willing to build a continuing management and publication apparatus in addition to regular publications.

Source/credibility on my ramblings about NST: Writer since February 15, Governor since May 12

I thank my honourable frenemy Glen for his unanticipated support of this campaign.
