Gravedig, but I want to revive this topic. Sorry! Sad

Anyways....

Flags are very important to me. They symbolize a nation, wheter that flag captures the long history of the nation or not. They represent a nation, and are one of the many principal faces of a nation. With a flag, you can recognize which country are you talking about, and, for me, it can be a national symbol, that can unite a nation, like many, many other facts that can unite a nation. Plus, they look pretty.

I agree they symbolise important aspects of a nation, but people sometimes treat them like they were the very spirit of the nation, which shouldn't be the case.

Flags are odd in that over time their designs became different, mostly due to a power shift. But there's one particular flag that I'd like to point out, France's Flag has stood through numerous revolutions and uprisings against both the monarchy, the republic and the empire. It's truly fascinating that you can study so much from a flag.

For instance, when the dutch liberated Indonesia as a vassal state by force, Indonesian revolutions would often liberate a dutch building/base by ripping the blue off the dutch flag. Creating the Indonesian Flag. Though it's not exactly how the flag was later adopted for a nation, you can see how history is woven into that particular flag itself.

A flag is not only a nation's identity, it carries the blood and toil from all those years to achieve full independence.

I wouldn't go that far. Flags, in the end, are just pieces of cloth. They shouldn't be see as "carrying the blood and toil".

Well, that's what I think anyway. Because here in Indonesia, it took us tenths of years until we could actually put up the flag to define Indonesia, and our ancestors have died to accomplish that. So yeah, it's kind of a big deal.

Sometimes, a flag might do what Hammer described above, sometimes, it doesn't.
