It's not the first time this has happened. There are many that died in the holy land due to stampedes of impatient worshippers. But I simply can't comprehend the magnitude of the situation, because the Holy Land is managed by one of the wealthiest countries in the civilised world, yet they couldn't even mitigate this crisis.

Bonobo, the mosque thing is caused by a falling crane that fell by a desert stom. This particular incident happened in Mina, as a part of the Islamic hajj travel, they are allowed to come to something called jumroh, where tall black pillars stood up inside a building. This is to represent satan, and we throw rocks to these pillars, as if we throw rocks to satan. This is jumroh.
Now on the way to this jumroh, is where the incident happened, it was the travelers from Egypt and Africa turn to go to jumroh. They were restless, and there was a lack of coordination. Hence the trampling. But tramplings in the holy mosque is existent, but not this large of a scale. Particularly because the travelers are able to circle around the ka'bah in various stories, which in turn, makes more pathways. You can look this up, if you're interested about hajj.
