2016 Peruvian Presidential Election
#1

United States. Singapore. Canada. It is time for Peru!

On Friday former president Alan García launched his candidacy for a third non-consecutive term. He joins at least four other prospective or actual candidates:
  • Keiko Fujimori, the daughter of former president Alberto Fujimori, who is in prision for human rights violations, and a former congresswoman. She finished second in the 2011 election.
  • Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, a former Prime Minister and Minister of the Economy. He is also an American citizen, and finished third in the 2011 election.
  • Veronika Mendoza, recently won the primary of a left-wing coalition. She is a relatively recent political figure.
  • Alejandro Toledo: former president and renowned economist who led the opposition to Fujimori just before his downfall in 2000. He finished fourth in the 2011 election.
Elections will happen at some point of April 2016, with an almost certain runoff election in June.

I would never back Veronika Mendoza. Every time the left has ruled Peru, it has done a great job at collapsing our economy and increasing income inequality. I decided back in 2011 (even though I could not vote yet) that my vote was going to PPK. He is the best prepared candidate, maybe alongside Alan García.

Oh no, that was his party for the 2011 election. He has now formed a party called Peruanos por el Kambio (Peruvians for Change), spelt like that so it will match his initials.

A lot has happened since November. Toledo has zero chances of being elected, Keiko Fujimori is still leading with over 35% in all polls, and I'm no longer entirely opposed to Mendoza, mainly due to her position in favour of legalising abortion and same-sex marriage. Another change is the surge to César Acuña and Julio Guzmán over a month ago. There have been very convincing accusations that Acuña plagiarised entire pages in his doctoral thesis and published a book written by an old teacher of his, but placing himself as the sole author.

Recently it surfaced that the party convention that elected Guzmán as candidate hadn't followed proper procedure, and that Acuña gave away money to people at a campaign event. This morning the National Elections Jury ruled on those two accusations: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2016/ma...l-election.

This is a really nice resource to see who the candidates are. It doesn't include the really minor candidates, and it's missing one candidate called Alfredo Barnechea who is rising in recent polls, but still, fairly comprehensive.
