OOC: Lampshade Galaxy
#1

It's going to be a couple of weeks before the map develops to the point where we start making first contact with each other, and RPing can really begin, so I'd like to start fleshing out the galaxy in preparation for that. My main suggestion is a centralised "Encyclopaedia Galactica" thread for mutual worldbuilding, where we all have entries for our civilisation detailing things like information about our species, form of government, pre-spaceflight travel history, etc. I'd also like to suggest the following basic agreements for the Lampshade Galaxy;

1. No one can be the Human species/civilisation
2. The galaxy is littered with the remains of a galaxy spanning Human empire, that collapsed before our respective species achieved spaceflight
3. That human inhabited worlds litter the galaxy in various states of development
4. That you can be a Human civilisation, formed from a former human colony world
5. That everyone must identify a primary species (I suggest using Stellaris for this) and no one else can make use of that species (excluding Humans) without that players consent; anyone can take humans as a secondary species due to their galaxy spanning former empire
6. That secondary species can be added to civilisations over time, as they are discovered, including segments of other peoples primary or secondary species if they consent
6. That each week be designated as a period of time - I suggest roughly 50 years - spanning from the fall of the human empire. Our first "week" being designated as 300GE (Galactic Era), or 300 years after the collapse of the human empire
7. That RP's are designated as occurring in a certain time-period, using the map that dates from that era
8. That changes that occur in RP - ie; planets changing hands in war- are added to the map

What about for Species/nations encroaching into the galaxy from another galaxy?

I think that could be made to work, within limits; a species capable of extra-galactic travel would be completely unbalanced in terms of technology and resources, but so long as you are "cut off" it should be ok, I'd suggest either a migratory species that has left their old galaxy entirely, and travelled to this one over a long period of time, or a far-flung colonisation effort with no contact with the home galaxy.

I'd like to see every day be 10 years. Makes it easier to have to convert.

How far can we travel and explore? I would say likely not very far from claimed space, if there aren't any wormholes or equivalent.

Speaking of that, I think we should consider placing wormholes (or some kind of transport devices left behind from the humans) on the map, randomly. This could add a new strategy/conflict factor as well as new means of interacting with species that are very far away.

I'd say Humans left some sort of a transportation device around. Like a galactic mass transit system.

The way to balance out the fact that you could conceivably take over the galaxy is to make this system of transit wholly unusable until much later, like with Event Horizon's black hole and a defense against it.
