Third Republic of Transsuneria - Dretje Fellesbund Transsuneria

Transsuneria, officially the Third Republic of Transsuneria (Dretje Fellesbund Transsuneria), is an archipelagic state located in the extreme of the North-Western Arm. It is composed of one larger island (Regonia), two smaller (Hilip and Sundoe) and several islets. The climate is tropical and the islands are exposed to yearly storms and hurricanes. The nation's name means "beyond Suneria", but what exactly was called Suneria is no longer known. A popular movement is working for a name change to Regonia.

Not much is known about Transsuneria's early history, but it is certain several nomadic peoples (hunter-gatherers) inhabited the islands periodically until colonists started settling them. The inhabitants today are the descendants of the many nationalities settling the islands from around 1600 and onwards, and their contemporary official language (officially Regonian or just Transsunerian) is a mix of at least three languages. Transsuneria is currently recovering from several decades of civil war.

The transsunerian economy is mainly based on phosphate mining, fishing, and petroleum refinement.

Recent history
Transsunieria's 20th century history is dominated by two civil wars. The first one started in 1955 and was caused by issues regarding ownership of newly found phosphate deposits, fuelled by tension between the two major social-ethnic groups Nul and Forinsel, where the latter had claimed sole ownership of the deposits. The war was characterised by low intensity and a slow immiseration. The war culminated in 1962 with the severe but inconclusive siege of the largest city Floodport. A treaty was signed, ending the war and replacing the defunct First Republic, but it failed to properly address the real issues, such as ownership of the phosphate and only cemented the pre-war tensions. With most of its infrastructure devastated by the war, and with very limited outside help it took almost 20 years to rebuild. By that time, Transsuneria could no longer keep up with the foreign competition.

The Second Republic sought to bring new energy to its industry and started taking expensive international loans. At first it seemed successful and there was a period of relative affluence during the 80s and 90s. Tensions were reduced and it seemed the question of the ownership of the phosphor was finally going to be solved. But soon the government was out of money, and many ministers fled abroad. Accusations of corruption arose, and it was suspected many of the ministers had stolen from the government.

In 2005, head of the police Horace Soormann released compelling evidence that Nul ministers had transferred the government's funds abroad. Accusing remaining Nul ministers of corruption while also claiming the Nul as a whole was responsible, he and his closest companions later called Soormann Fighters, stormed the parliament and arrested all Nul ministers, replacing them with members of his own newly formed party, the Purists. He assumed the role of defence minister and placed his companions in high-ranking positions in the military and police. This move was widely unpopular among most Transsunerians, but few could oppose it. In 2008 Soormann demanded that all Nul soldiers and police men should be disarmed, claiming they were untrustworthy.

The Nul troops refused and responded by locking down military bases and imprisoning members of the Purist Party. Soormann responded by releasing what he claimed to be evidence of Nul mass involvement in the corruption. After a nerve gas attack on one of the Forinsel phosphate mines (that most likely was staged by Soormann himself), Soormann called for the support of the Forinsel and ordered the military to arrest their Nul colleagues. Fighting began when loyal Forinsel troops tried to storm a strategically important airfield near Gerstaad, controlled by mostly Nul soldiers. Soormann initially had intense support by Forinsel citizens.

Second Civil War
Following fierce fighting, Soormann soon gained control of the Nul-controlled airfield at Gerstaad giving him access to a few fighters and surveillance craft. Though outdated, they gave him the means of controlling the important barge traffic between the islands and thereby obstructing movement by Nul troops. Encouraged by his success, Soormann let his Purists and Fighters take control over Nul-owned business and assets. The often brutal way of doing so did not pass unnoticed by the Forensel citizens, and when Soormann took control of the entire Transsunerian government in 2009 (declaring himself Grandmaster) and deprived the Nul of their citizenship many Forinsel took to the streets to protest. The Soormann Fighters, together with loyal police forces and military started dispersing the protesters, often resulting in brutal violence. Soormann managed to suppress the protests but lost much of the wide support he had enjoyed in the beginning.

Militarily, Soormann and his opponents disposed of an equal amount of troops, though the Nul mostly lacked coordination. This changed when the Nul colonel Maximilian Kroon managed to consolidate and coordinate the Nul troops, aided by Forinsel citizens. Through a series of secret meetings with Forinsel ministers and business men, Kroon managed to gain support to form a more well organised resistance, which they called the Federation. Their first joint operation was a strike against state prisons to free Nul ministers, which saw some success, allowing them to later form an alternative government. Soormann responded by executing remaining prisoners.

The fighting after Gerstaad had so far been limited to a few skirmishes but escalated in 2010 after several failed attempts by the Federation to retake the airfield. Both sides started employing militia warfare, not willing to risk full confrontation, aiming to wear the opposing side down. The following years the Federation and Soormann achieved little militarily, but the strain on civilian life increased slowly. Attacks on farms and food transports were common. By the end of 2013 the food shortage was getting critical. Facing a nation-wide famine, both sides stepped up their plans.

Early in 2015 the Federation managed to take over what had been a top-secret military base, finding large quantities of the nerve gas sarin. Immediately, the Federation decided to dump the containers in the Pacific Ocean to prevent Soormann from using it further. After one of the transport ships dumping the sarin, the Soot, found itself in distress and sent out distress calls, prompting several nations to participate in search operations, the dire situation in Transsuniera was soon made known to the world. After several attacks by the Purists and Soormann Fighters, a coalition with Sedunn and Karnetvor was formed to help the Federation defeat Soormann.

With immensely more modern and powerful equipment, Sedunn and Karnetvor quickly turned the balance in favour of the Federation, leading to the capturing of Soormann and surrender of the Purists and Soormann Fighters in May 5th, 2015, ending the war. It is estimated that about 28,000 people lost their lives in the war (about 20% of the population), of which more than 20,000 were civilians.

Flag and coat of arms
The current Transsunerian flag and coat of arms were adopted in February 2017. See above.

The flag is based on the winning design in a popular competition. Officially, the colours of the flag, red-white-yellow, represent suffering, peace, and the nation's beaches that hold a special place in Transsunerian history. The flag features a rejnblom, a flower that blooms at the start of the monsoon season, representing rebirth and hope.

The coat of arms follows the same theme, although also featuring the same eagle as the First Republic used the first years after being formed. At the bottom of the crest there are two fields of green and blue in the exact same shades as Karnetvor respectively Sedunn use in their flags in acknowledgement of their support. The text is Transsunerian for "Hope - Sacrifice - Future".

So, this is Transsuneria, the nation that you've seen being mentioned here and there. Thoughts so far?
