Travelling faster than light - FTL Drives

Space is vast. Travelling to other systems means crossing enormous amounts of space, and getting there therefore requires high velocities. The speed of light (about 300,000,000 m/s) is the highest velocity possible, meaning that to travel a distance of one single pixel on the galactic map would take 100 years at absolute maximum velocity. However, achieving relative velocities near or surpassing the speed of light is forbidden by the theory of special relativity, and manipulation of spacetime itself is required. This is done in two different ways, using either a warp drive (see below) or a frame shift drive.

Warp drive
The concept of warp drive is to create a displacement field, or a 'bubble', around the vessel, that contracts space in front of it and expands space behind it. Inside the bubble, space-time remains unaltered. By doing this, the vessel can reach its destination a lot faster, still not surpassing the speed of light relatively, but effectively, in the sense that a distance of one light year is travelled in less time than allowed by the speed of light.

To generate this displacement field, enormous amounts of energy is required. One way of generating such amounts is to let normal matter collide with anti-matter. Anti-matter is extremely volatile and must be delicately contained; a breach of containment may have fatal consequences. However, a reactor that runs on anti-matter can generate energy to be used by other systems on board the vessel.

To generate a stable and large enough displacement field many ships use warp nacelles, like the Treecu ship below.

Modia is an inhabited world and the homeworld of the Modians. The planet is controlled by the Second Modian Confederacy and is home to it capital.

Modia has a nitrogen-oxygen atmosphere (76% nitrogen, 23% oxygen), and oceans covering roughly three-fifths of the planet's surface. The planet hosts a large, diverse biosphere despite multiple mass extinction events in the past 12,000 years. By 300GE, five centuries after the fall of the first Modian Confederacy, it held the only known surviving Modian populations.

Arebel was the first interstellar colony of the Second Modian Confederacy.

The planet has been colonized extensively by previous Modian civilizations, and contains extensive historical and archaeological evidence of these lost eras. Some of the planet's more intact sites have been reclaimed and rebuild my modern colonists.

The planet contains a large biosphere. However its small a fossil record and significant genetic similarities to that of Modia have caused many to suspect that much of its biosphere was artificially introduced during original Modian colonization millenia ago.

Intergalactic System of Units
The Intergalactic System of Units (abbreviated SI) is a standardized system of measurement widely used between interstellar nations.

The system orginates from the days of humanity, where it served as its dominant form of measurement. Despite its human-centric bias it retains popularity as an intergalactic standard.

Among its units of measurement it defines the Human Standard Calendar (HSC). Though its reference point, believed to be the ancient human homeworld due to the presence of elements such as "leap days", is unknown it still retains a role amongst many societies, especially those with a strong human influence. The year is measured in terms of the Galactic Era (GE) beginning roughly around the fall of the human civilization.

Velpus(English, Human Languages and the majority of Velpus Languages)/Ounuse(Otonushe)/Velpari(Mu'uani)/Fox(Flowerfieldan)
A picture of a Velpan

The Velpus are a dominant species in Ryccia. By population, their domination over the Ryccian homeland is mixed, with areas dominated by Velpus in demographics, and, in others, they are non-existant.

Various significant Velpan Nations have existed throughout Ryccia's history, like the Kingdom of Otonushe or the Prinicipality of Shuben. Part-Velpan significant nations like the Lordship of Mu'uan or the Republic of Flowerfield also existed.

The Velpus originated as a sentient descendent of foxes installed by humans in the planet of Otonushe, which is, coincidentally, the former capital of the former Kingdom of Otonushe. Over time, they expanded into other planets due to migration and the Metori Slave Trade, when humans did not fully control Ryccia.

After humans gained full control over Ryccia, the various Velpus were freed from the Metori. However, the descendents of the original Velpus were now so different to each other culturally and linguistically in many regions that they developed by their own.

The Otonushe Velpus are considered pure Velpus because Otonushe is the homeland of the species. DNA research supports this. However, this does not mean that the other Velpus are hybrids, but rather, they evolved differently, even though they are the same species. Comparative Example: Different kinds of breeds of dogs. Or the various human races.

Some Velpus groups are closely linked to the Otonushe genetically and linguistically. Others are very distant, and are very different to the Otonushe in color and genetics.

The size of a Velpus varies, because there are so many breeds. So do the colors, and even facial makeup might be different from region to region.

The Velpus are omnivores. Some kinds of breeds love meat more than plants, others are viceversa, depending on the ecosystems, flora and fauna of a planet. Others view the taste of both equal. However, one small breed in size, the Tunashige, is the exception if pure. Due to evolving in a region of its planet that has toxic plants that only its prey can eat, the pure Tunashige are carnivores. They cannot eat plants. This breed has 5,648 pure members, and 12,573 mixed ones. The mixed ones are omnivores.

Fall of the First Modian Confederacy

(Excerpt from “End of the Dark Age”, 95 NMC/283 GE)

"It is said it took only a single day to destroy the first Confederacy. In a single blow centuries of Modian civilization was destroyed. Its cataclysmic events and the resulting Great Collapse would take Modia nearly five centuries to recover from.

The Emeton Crater stands as the last monument of the once great capital city of the Confederacy. Contemporary reports describe a “great fire raining from the sky”, setting entire continents aflame and cities in ruins. Within a year billions of our people lay slaughtered. Civilization would crumble and soon a technological Dark Age would consume us. It is perhaps out of sheer luck that we fared better than our ancient ancestors millennia ago.
And what of our colonial empire? As we rediscover Arebel, the Jewel of the first Confederacy, we find a ruined tomb completely devoid of our brethren. Are there any other Modians out there among the lost worlds of our empire? I dread the answer.

But who is to blame for this? As I read our lost history I can see only one worthy of the blame. Only one race capable of such brutal savagery against our people. The race of darkness that invaded and overran our galaxy in a fury of genocidal destruction: that monstrous race we know as Humanity. Our forefathers trusted that the Humans would leave us in peace and look at what they did to us! Perhaps it is fitting that they seem to have annihilated themselves. I can only hope they finished the job, lest their hordes return again. And as we burned, what of the others? Were all the other aliens to weak and cowardly to help us? Or did they bask in our face with the humans? As we head to the stars Modia must trust no race but our own. Should we ever encounter the Humans they must know no mercy. We will strike back at them tenfold! We will find the human homeworld and do to it what they did to ours! For the glory of Modia and the honour of our predecessors!"

The Treecu

Background
The people called Treecu are two separate species that evolved on the same planet - Ecteen: the insectoids known as the T'eetakh, and the mammalians known as the Limavu. About one million years ago, the insectoids had a highly technologically developed civilisation, dominating the planet. They achieved interplanetary space travel, colonised and terraformed the closest planet in their system, today known as Khin, achieving a somewhat forgiving self-sustaining environment. A combination of several devastating wars involving biological weapons, natural disasters and climate changes induced a mass extinction event forcing the few remaining T'eetakh off their home world. After much hardship, a smaller group of non-infected/immune found refuge on Khin, where they survived until present day in small numbers.

They continued to evolve in their new environment. A constant shortage of nourishment led to decreased length; fossil findings indicate a 50% reduction. Over time, knowledge of the old world and the advanced technology diminished. By the time the T'eetakh were discovered by the Limavu, they had a civilisation at a pre-industrial level.

In the place of the insectoids, the Limavu evolved and formed a civilisation of their own. As scientific advances were made, traces of an ancient civilisation were discovered. When telescopes were directed to the neighbouring planet they soon found it to be habitable. This prompted fast advances in astronomy and space faring technology. The first images from space probes of the surface of Khin that were sent back to Ecteen revealed traces of infrastructure and vegetation. Learning that they were not alone in the universe, the Limavu united as a species, with a common goal to explore Khin.

Following the first successful landings on Khin, first contact was made between the distant relatives. Seeing that most insectoids were in terrible shape, the mammalians aided them by sending food and medical technology, which provided the Limavu with a chance to study the T'eetakh's DNA more closely. They soon found that they shared most of their gene pool. The Limavu were very impressed by how the T'eetakh had managed to survive for so long, and they slowly helped them to adapt to new technology and a great bond was formed.

Aided by the analytical and thoughtful insectoids, they achieved FTL travelling together. Today, the two species coexist as one; Treecu is a language constructed to be possible for both species to pronounce.

Biology
The two Treecu species, the Limavu and T'eetakh, are distantly related, but have little in common. They both breath hydrogen-nitrogen, walk upright, have two arms and two legs and are carnivores.

- Limavu

Homeworld: Ecteen
Classification: Mammalian
Average Height: 1.8 m
Average Weight: 75 kg

A female Limavu, Captain Loom of the Irtee.

The Limavu evolved from an amphibian mammalian creature, are bipedal, and have two arms with five digits on each hand. They have excellent sight, being able to see a very broad spectrum of wavelengths. The species thrive in humid environments and are sensitive to freezing temperatures.

The Limavu have two genders, with little difference in appearance. Due to evolving in a specific wetlands region, only leaving there during industrialisation, there is no significant difference between individuals from different regions of the planet. For genetic reasons, Limavu females must be pregnant at least once in their lifetime to not suffer premature cellular degradation.

- T'eetakh

Homeworld: Ecteen/Khin
Classification: Insectoid
Average Height: 0.9 m
Average Weight: 30 kg
