Trump Presidency
#141

Well, today was the day that House Speaker Paul Ryan would have pushed Trumpcare to a vote, but it won't happen today, because the fiscal ultraconservatives of the Republican Party (the Freedom Caucus) won't back the bill. There is going to be negotiations throughout the day between the moderate Republicans (who support repeal and replace) and the Freedom Caucus (who just want a full repeal). As for the House Democrats, they're practically united in opposition to both repeal and replace. According to a Quinnipiac University poll, only 17% of voters support the bill. The vote has been delayed until tomorrow morning.

Update: I don't know how Republicans are going to form consensus among each other. The so-called Tuesday Group (moderate Republicans) doesn't want to make concessions to the Freedom Caucus and vice versa, which would prevent Trumpcare from passing. Right this hour, the Tuesday Group (led by Reps. Charlie Dent, Tom MacArthur and Elise Stefanik) is meeting with the White House, while the Freedom Caucus (led by Rep. Mark Meadows) is meeting with Speaker Paul Ryan. This is gonna be a long night.

IMHO as a Democrat, I hope they fail to reach consensus because this bill is a disaster with little negotiation with the Democrats.

Edit: The following White House personnel are attending the meeting between Speaker Ryan and the Freedom Caucus.
  • Reince Priebus (White House Chief of Staff)
  • Steve Bannon (Senior Counselor and White House Chief Strategist)
  • Kellyanne Conway (Counselor to the President)
  • Mick Mulvaney (Director of the Office of Management and Budget; former Congressman and member of the Freedom Caucus)

Update: The vote on Trumpcare has been canceled. President Trump requested Speaker Paul Ryan to withdraw the bill, which he did, moments before the vote was going to happen. This is the first major defeat of the Trump Administration, and rightly so. He needs to keep his promises:

I'm sorry, that stat and that website is the biggest bullshit. That's just left-wing propaganda, pretending that the world is getting better. If it was 36% he wouldn't have been elected. America is a lot more stupid than you people think.

Well, the guy has never been very popular in the first place. Remember that he lost the popular vote (46% of voters voted for him, compared to Hillary's 48%). Also, after all those high profile scandals and policy failures, it makes sense that the guy's approval ratings would suffer; if a president has, for example, 50% approval, and he makes a high profile blunder, of course at least some of those people won't be happy.

I'll end by saying that Gallup is an independent organization which has been doing these surveys since the 1930's, for both Republican and Democratic administrations, plus similar ones in lots of countries around the world. They aren't exactly "left-wing propaganda".

It just got worse for Trump. Today's poll from Gallup has him at 35% approval. Look @Zak6858, as @RandomGuy199 said, Gallup is a credible and respected polling company. This is the same polling agency that had Obama deep underwater at times. There were times when Gallup polls had Obama's approval rating at 38%. They don't manipulate the numbers. So, to say that Gallup is left-wing propaganda, I just cannot agree.

Here are the lowest numbers for American Presidents from Gallup:
  • 38% — Barack Obama (Dem)
  • 25% — George W. Bush (Rep)
  • 37% — Bill Clinton (Dem)
  • 29% — George H.W. Bush (Rep)
  • 35% — Ronald Reagan (Rep)
  • 28% — Jimmy Carter (Dem)
  • 37% — Gerald Ford (Rep)
  • 24% — Richard Nixon (Rep)
  • 35% — Lyndon Johnson (Dem)
  • 56% — John Kennedy (Dem)
  • 48% — Dwight Eisenhower (Rep)
  • 22% — Harry Truman (Dem)

SO what everyone is saying now is that Trump is the worst president even though now ur 'credible' organisation doesn't say so. I highly doubt anyone who voted for Trump has changed their mind. People on the far sides of the spectrum don't change their beliefs.

Except the people who were still on the fence about him and voted for him. You seem to have forgotten that both Trump and Clinton were massively unpopular heading into the general election. There were plenty of people who reluctantly voted for Trump and Clinton. Republicans voting for Clinton because they hated Trump. Democrats voting for Trump because they hated Clinton. And when it comes to healthcare, it was one of the highest priorities of the 2016 election and the Republicans failed miserably on healthcare last week. Do you not expect there to be fallout from a major failure? There are people out there who feel either betrayed or pissed that Trump and the Republicans didn't follow through.

Huge news: Former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn is now offering to testify before Congress and the FBI in exchange for immunity.
