[IC]Renewal of the Sedunno-Karnetvorian Alliance
#1

The port of Petrovka, Karniya Island, Tasternine. In this place, more than 450 years ago, captain Josef Ibisević met Sedunnic explorer Linnerse, in the first encounter between civilizations of the Western and Eastern Continents. Centuries later, in 1864, delegates from Sedunn and the newly formed Karnetvorian Confederacy met to sign a document recognizing the many years of cooperation between the countries; the Treaty of Petrovka. The Treaty established an alliance, known as the Sedunno-Karnetvorian Alliance, which would last until 1917, when deteriorating relations and Karnetvor's imperialist policies and wars led to its termination. After a century which found them in opposite sides of the Great War (1949-1955) and years of strained relations and resentment, a reapproachment had occurred, and both became allies again, in the framework of the South Pacific Treaty Organization. In this climate of reconciliation, both decided to reinstate the old Alliance, a hundred years after its termination.

President Kerenskiy's motorcade arrived at the city's Main Square. It was the perfect backdrop to a ceremony of such importance; the square is located less than 100 meters from the sea, and the Port was just to the east. In the square itself, there is the Tasternine Historical Museum, which had all sorts of objects dating back to the 16th Century, including the supposed flag Cpt. Ibisević carried when he claimed the island.

Besides the President, in the motorcade travelled some of Karnetvor's leading statesmen: Foreign Minister Josef Kyrzinski, Speaker of the House Saria Alianovna, Defense Minister Benson van Heyden, among others. Even SPTO Council Secretary Zelda Harkinyan decided to attend; a Karnetvorian herself, although she was most likely glad that she could leave Balent for once. The only remarkable absence was that of the Vice-President, who had limited his public appearances, with rumors circulating about his health.

On the Port, the crew of the KRS Hoffmann aircraft carrier, flagship of the Karnetvorian Navy, sighted the two Sedunnic ships they had been expecting. Signals were made to the cruiser KRS Karnetia and the destroyer KRS Liberty, the latter famous for its service during the 2015 Transsunerian Crisis. They, together with a replica of Captain Ibisević's ship, the Artemis, went to receive them.

The replica of the original Tapparad, the Sedunnic galleon that had crossed the Pacific Ocean over 450 years ago, though now fitted with a modern diesel engine to help make the crossing both safer and faster, still needed more time than the Sedunnic delegation could spare. By positioning a few ships from the navy evenly on the sea route, the delegation had been flown from ship to ship with helicopters, until getting dropped off on the modern incarnation, the SNS Tapparad. Sighting Tasternine's shores, parts of delegation made a final change of ships to the replica and joined the crew on deck. The crew wore historically authentic-looking clothes, and they had even managed to find an actor that looked somewhat like old captain Linnerse.

The Sedunnic delegation consisted of the so called full representation, which included king Vimmru, the foreign minister, the defence minister, the first speaker of the parliament, the supreme commander of the Sedunnic Armed Forces and other important state representatives. The delegation also included the branch chiefs, representatives of the political opposition and the the significant others of the delegates. To avoid getting the replica Tapparad too crowded, only members of the full representation had been transferred on board.

As the Karnetvorian ships got closer, bosun's whistles could be heard on both Sedunnic ships, calling all crew to stand by the gunwale to salute the Karnetvorians. When the Karnetvorians were close enough, the starboard-side guns on the replica initiated a gun salute, firing a triple old Royal Salute, that had been used exclusively for the Karnetvorians, until the termination of the Sedunno-Karnetvorian Alliance. After the last blast from the cannons faded out, the crews of the two Tapparads stood at attention, and drum rolls were played as the Sedunnic and Karnetvorian ships passed each other.

The Karnetvorian vessels led their Sedunnic counterparts to the port. There, the Sedunnic delegation disembarked, being received by two women in traditional Tasterninian dress, and offered a cup of tea. Its members were then taken to the Main Square.

Just before the Sedunners arrived, two battalions of the Karnetvorian Army, wearing the 19th Century-style parade uniform, and the National Armed Forces Band, started marching towards the Square. They marched around it, and stopped once the motorcade arrived. As the Sedunnic King walked out of the car, the soldiers lined up to receive him. All the while, the band played traditional Karnetvorian and Sedunnic military marches; Karnetskaya Maršča, Karnetvors'kaya Maršča, and the Cavalry Song were played on the Karnetvorian side, while on the Sedunnic side, Sedunnejj Triffsimattsdue (Sedunnic Inspection March) and Vu Essela (From Essela) were played. The band closed with the Monachian March, a song composed after the victory in the 1863 Battle of Monachia, which is used in both countries.

The Presidential Guard receives the delegations

President Kerenskiy, Minister Van Heyden, and Army Chief of Staff Josef Rendici stepped forth to inspect the troops. After the usual drill, the President went to recieve the King. He shaked the King's hand, and both men, together with their entourage, walked to the center of the Square. There, a copy of the original document from 1864 (the original is believed to be lost) was presented to the heads of state, plus an addendum putting it back into force. Both leaders took turns signing the document. Afterwards, both national anthems were played.

To close the ceremony, both leaders would make speeches. President Kerenskiy asked the King, a personal friend of his, to speak first.

Vimmru didn't speak much Karnetvorian. He knew the common pleasantries, how to introduce himself, and how to tell his age; he belonged to the generation that didn't have compulsory Karnetvorian in school, due to the cold relations after the Great War. But he had insisted upon delivering the speech in Karnetvorian. He had had his speech translated, then he had learned how to pronounce the sentences correctly, though not fully understanding them.

"Friends of Karnetvor, Friends of Sedunn; this is a day of symbolism. Those of you who were in the harbour earlier today saw the ships Tapparad and Artemis, replicas of the so momentous ships that started it all. Centuries followed of ever increasing trade, technological development and exchange of ideas, culminating in the signing of the Treaty of Petrovka.

It set, for the time, incredibly high standards, firmly stating that democracy, human equality and religious freedom would permeate everything that our two countries would undertake.

But soon our two nations would embark on different paths. Prioritise different. Parting ways. They became enemies. The road ahead was a bumpy one, for both.

Over time, we learned to again coexist, to tolerate and finally to cooperate. It is incredible how much has been accomplished in such a short amount of time, especially in Karnetvor, which is back as a role model of human rights, freedom and democracy.

Standing here in Petrovka, signing and reaffirming the Treaty is not merely symbolism. It is a testimony of the progress that has been made and our determination to defend what we believe in, together."

To conclude the ceremony, President Kerenskiy stepped into the podium. Being the leader of a multilingual country, he had a penchant for languages, and he decided to use three in the speech.

(In Karnetvorian) "Karnetvorians! Sedunners! As my Sedunnic counterpart has said, this is a historic day. This document we have signed today is not just a 150 year old piece of paper. It is a symbol of a long, long relationship, that originated in the 16th Century no less, has endured difficulties and disagreements, and even if we spent a century distrusting each other, there were still common objectives, shared principles, and ideals that bind us together. Today, that connection is official once again."

(In Sedunnic) "The honorable Pyotr Fyodorović, the first leader of unified Karnetvor, and the one who signed the original treaty, said at the time: 'this Alliance we have signed, will last for ages, and will ensure peace and liberty on both sides of this great ocean'. Today, more than ever, these words hold true."

(in English) "So, we, from Karnetia to Grovne, from the mountains of Friedland to Vastraenn in the Antarctic, must ensure, together with our SPTO allies, that those words keep holding true for many years to come."
