Day 13 - Christmas in Your NS Nation
#1

Day 13 - Christmas in your NS Nation.

It has become as much a tradition as the Advent Calendar itself to ask you what Christmas is like in your NS nation. Perhaps you've already told us, but not everyone will know and, of course, there might have been changes - the running of NS nations is rarely smooth, in my experience.

So, has anything significant happened in your nation to shape the way it celebrates Christmas? Does it celebrate Christmas at all? Perhaps you have some really novel traditions, or perhaps there's some heated religious tension that turns Christmas into riot night? Who knows? You do! Tell us!

I've told you before about Vamapin Siread sutaciraduinea, the Erinoran midsummer Feast of Created Light, celebrating the long days of summer and the glory of creation, particularly according to the Erinoran religion of Revara. I also included how some Christmas traditions have become increasingly common in the middle of this two week festival, but that they aren't the main attraction.

Last year, Vamapin, as it is known for short, was taking place in the midst of a Civil War which was rapidly escalating into an international conflict, which eventually resolved itself in early 2018. Since then, Erinor has taken the bold step of federalising to become the Federal Republic of Erinor & Sereva (we're very proud of our ampersand) and, as such, Serevan Buddhist traditions will be more prevalent than usual across the nation as the FRES does it's best to put on a show of unity. As part of this, the leader of the Serevan National party and now leader of the state of Sereva will take part in the annual opening ceremony of Vamapin tomorrow. This is a huge event which takes place in the Mena Tacirid, Ciria's largest temple, although Ciria is no longer the nation's capital, only the capital of the state of Erinor.

Anyway, who's next?

In Harmakmis, it is a secular nation, so Christmas is not widely celebrated, nor does the Church of Harmakmis (A mixture of Catholism and Protestant) officially recognize it. Instead, on the Winter Solstice, a feast day is celebrated. Simply know as the 'Feast of Winter,' or in Harmakmian (Finnish), 'Talvipäivä.' Basically, it is a less commercialized version of Christmas, focusing more on winter, family, and gift-sharing. Houses are decorated with Harmakmian Pine Cones, burlap bows, white lights, punainen berries (red berries), and a small Harmakmian Pine in the house. The festival is quite fun and also relaxing, as it simple. Most buisnesses are closed before, the day of, and after the festival. Everything seems to calm down then, as people set down their differences for a day.

---

In Gordista, they celebrate a secular holiday called 'Festivus.' It is celebrated on December 23rd, and is opposed to religion and commercialism. Traditions include, the Festivus pole (shows strength and conformity), a feast, the Airing of grievances (where you list your complaints about the people in the room), and the feats of strength (an informal wrestling match). There are no decorations, especially tinsel, since they are distracting. Created during the dictatoral rule of Jem Katra I, many view it as arbitrary and out-dated, with too many facist ideals. In recent years, protests have arose declaring that it should be banned and be replaced with the Feast of Winter. Due to the Harmakmis-Gordista merger, that may soon happen.

Long live Festivus! It is celebrated here in a few small concentrations, but overall regular Christmas is practiced. It is the same as in OTL but it focuses more on the family than on the commercial aspects and other stuff.

Celebrating Christmas in Sedunn is a quite new tradition, at least for the population at large. Christianity was brought to Sedunn during the 17th century by traders, and, to a much lesser extent, by foreign missionaries. Today about 10% of the population consider themselves Christian, and follow a local branch close to the Protestant faith. It wasn't until the 60s that celebration started to spread to non-followers, increasing drastically after the 80s with a heavy commercialisation driven by the retail sector.

Sedunnic Christians emphasise the perspective of the shepherds and how they receive the news of the birth of Jesus. The week before Christamas Day, they often decorate their homes with straw to represent the shepherds and angels to represent the angel that brought the news to the shepherds. On Christmas Day, most families attend an early morning service to receive the news of the birth of Jesus themselves. The same day a large variety of traditional dishes is served for dinner, but a special dark Christmas bread and a sweet cider always accompany the meal. Gifts are often exchanged after the dinner, in commemoration of the gifts brought to Jesus by the Three Wise Men.

The non-Christian majority often also have a similar dinner, and many give their young gifts. However, Christmas is overshadowed by a domestic holiday, the Detaeretulld, or the Midsummer Day at summer solstice (occurring at 20th-23rd), which is a public holiday. (OOC: or the winter solstice if the northern hemisphere is your frame of reference.)

Pencil Sharpeners 2 does not celebrate Christmas, for the following reasons:
Holidays reduce our ECONOMIC DOMINANCE, so are not allowed.
Christmas is religious-based, so is not allowed.
Christmas is a disgusting example of capitalism, so is not allowed.
Christmas may result in happiness, which is not allowed.
Did some LC, MoRA, CRS stuff in the past. Do a lot of World Census stuff now.

Fair points. You forgot though that Christmas discourages people from venerating the panda shrines in their houses...
