[Discussion] Naming the continents on the regional map
#11

The idea of referencing some of our own regional historical nations is kind of lovely... in my nation's stories when I need an ancient culture I refer to Ancient Swabia …

Although I'm not too keen on a Potatodom contient. lol.

I'm re-upping this thread so that we can continue talking about this. I'm nominating Qwert's suggestions in the following post:

(08-16-2019, 05:57 PM)Qwert Wrote: Some suggestions

Central Islands: Same name
Antarctic Continent: Keylia (uncertain IC origin, OOC origin is the name of the one who draw the map, Kyle)
Mid-Southwestern Landmass: Crabria, coming from some old possible proto-Karnetvorian/Resentinian (RL Slavic) language stem for the continent: khrabry/hrab, meaning brave. It is also got into the Sedunnic language by mistake as 'Ksavbyu'.
Western Continent: Cordilia (from Spanish 'Cordillera' referring to the massive mountain ranges in the centre of the continent, possibly specifically to the Cordillera Range on the border between Huawan and Qvait)
Rainbow Islands: Same name
Northeastern Continent: Bailtem (from the Sedunnic name 'Beilltemm', which I believe is used in other languages too?)
Southeastern Continent:Suderia (from Faudish, but it depends on whether they stay active or not)

I do like the suggestions, but I do feel like we should a have a bit more variety in naming the Continents. There are too many ending with -ia for my liking.

Yeah, you may be right. Any suggestions how to modify the names?

Central Islands: Same name
Antarctic Continent: Instead of Keylia, why not Iylek or Kyel or Kyelan (uncertain IC origin, OOC origin is the name of the one who draw the map, Kyle)
Western Continent: Cordilia (from Spanish 'Cordillera' referring to the massive mountain ranges in the centre of the continent, possibly specifically to the Cordillera Range on the border between Huawan and Qvait) Cordilia could be Cordilica, Cordila or Cordera.
Rainbow Islands: Same name
Northeastern Continent: Bailtem (from the Sedunnic name 'Beilltemm', which I believe is used in other languages too?)
Southeastern Continent: Suderia (from Faudish, but it depends on whether they stay active or not)
Suderia could be Austrila based on the Austral language, or Austras

I’d have a suggestion for Crabria too, but I can’t think of any edits that won’t stray from the original meaning of the name

I’m not a big fan of Suderia. The Word Sud is South in several European languages and calling it suderia reminds me of Australia, an rl equivalent to what Suderia could mean ooc. The English language in the rp is Austral, so I think it would be better to have one of the continents be named after the lingua Franca of the region.

But, Austral does mean south in other European languages. I think that name would fit with on of the new continents that are decor only, as it implies these people came from somewhere else.

What do you think of my suggestions?

Which is exactly why Suderia ought to be swapped out with a continent inspired by Austral. If both are South then we should use the one where the region at large shares a connection with similar to Sedunn’s Bailtem where the Sedunnic language originated from ICly.
