Well, Sweden isn't that bad, as long as you keep away from the large cities. Lund is pretty nice, if you want suggestions. Honestly, Sweden is better than many nations, and you get to travel around almost a whole continent due to the Schengen area. (UK and Ireland and most of the Balkans are not part of it, though, but meh.)

It isn't that much desert. The country is big enough, that even if it was 95% desert, the 5% non-desert part would still be bigger than most European countries. Border control isn't that big of a deal, either.
