(OOC Discussion) Indigenous Peoples of the Western Contintent
#11

I've kinda been deliberately vague on that one so as to avoid any accidental racism (and it's one of the reasons I've avoided using photos), but much of their history and culture is (very loosely) inspired by pre-Columbian civilisations like the Maya, Inca and Tiwanaku, so, broadly speaking they ought to resemble the indigenous peoples of Meso- and South America.

I hope that's not too vague.

May I (politely) ask you to clarify what you mean by that? Do you mean that they are yours in the sense that you don't want anyone else interfering with their history (which is perfectly understandable, by the way - this thread isn't about interfering, just co-operating on history for those who wish to), that they are a unique people group, or something else?

Sure, the Southwest Continent should be included. It doesn't seem unlikely that there may have been contact between people groups on both continents prior to colonial powers arriving (although the predecessors of Karnetvor arrive in that part of the world very early, if I recall).

Actually.... It's sort of the other way around. Resentinians are decedent of Karnetvor. I think. I remember discussing this with him(because He uses Russian as his Language and I use Lithuanian). I'm sure there's a thread with this somewhere. I'll try to find it. And I'll also just tag @RandomGuy199 and see if he remembers better than me.

Sorry. I read RG199's history a few weeks ago, but I'm not sure I've retained much of it.

Don't get too excited. My research skills are lacking and I'm apt to include things just 'cos I think they are cool, so there's probably going to be a fair degree of disparity with actual pre-Columbian civilisation... This is, again, why I'm keeping things as vague as possible in terms of ethnicity.

I was excited because I happen to be Peruvian. ;)

Oh, I know, which is precisely why I replied the way I did. I know I'm playing about with and stealing ideas from the cultures of other people who also happen to be right here on the board.

Of course I'm sure there area a million ways in which the opposite has happened across the interwebs without much comment, but then European history and culture is so dominant it's practically public domain. I can understand why us casually messing about with other people's can be offensive.

So yeah, that's my disclaimer I guess; I'm an amateur playing about with things I don't really understand (and almost certainly can't do real justice to) just because I think they're cool and happen to have access to Wikipedia... :/

It would take a lot to make something like this racism. I'd say you are free to borrow from any culture (as long as it makes sense Tounge), and just because your architecture resembles Mayan doesn't mean your people have to. You should avoid stereotypes though, like a Frenchman with a baguette, a glass of wine, and.. you get the picture...

I understand, I'm just not sure what stereotypes I might stumble upon by accident. Let's just say I'm culturally sensitive enough to know I'm not culturally sensitive enough. Smile

This is the thread you're looking for. That reminds me, I should keep working on it. I haven't made a new chapter since the February coup...

Now, to clarify, yes, the Karnetvorian natives, the Karnetians, were the ones who settled in Resentine. Due to their relative isolation, the language both groups spoke evolved differently: it became Karnetvorian in Karnetvor (which is mainly based on Russian, but with some words taken from Ukrainian and Serbian along with some other modifications), and Resentinian in Resentine (I remember it was based on Ukrainian; Lithuanian wouldn't make much sense if both languages are related). Both the Karnetians and the Spaninols (Spanish speakers, living in the south of the country) could be considered indigenous groups of the Western Continent.

About the "taking things from other cultures" thing, there isn't a problem with that, that I know of. I have taken lots of inspiration from Eastern European culture, mainly from Russia, Ukraine, and Serbia (use of Cyrillic script, cuisine, language, among many other things), and to some extent Poland and Croatia (Catholic religion). Add to that some things taken from Germany (much of Karnetvor's military tradition and history are based on Germany's, but I haven't said a lot about it), and some things of my own, and you have Karnetvor.
