[DECLASSIFIED-DEC.2019] Feb19 Term: Interns and Advisors
#11

Hm, that's hard to gauge. I guess an internship could count as deputy for that purpose, but what about just a Cabinet advisor? It's precedent that an advisor does not fall under that clause, given that we had Amerion in Cabinet last term while he was CoA. Hm.

Alternatively, it may have been not legal to have Amerion last term - it's not exactly distant precedent Tounge

Perhaps what we need is clarification on whether junior Cabinet members are all firewalled, or only deputies. I've looked through the original separation of powers debate thread and there isn't much discussion of the deputies clause, really. IMO a deputy is closer to being an officer of the Coalition, and therefore being firewalled, because they innately have power delegated to them by another officer of the Coalition, while whole-Cabinet advisors and interns are not actually given any power.

If we're going to be individually picking interns from each ministry, that strays further to the line of deputy and we need to figure out a way to distinguish a deputy from an intern other than name.

I'll file a LQ on this soon. It is best to get clarification for the future as it does appear to be a very grey area.

I propose that we start with Amerion (because Amerion) and Viet (because New Deal/SWAN) when transition ends, and we can look for internships and a possible third if needed once transition is done. Sound good?

I think we should wait with Amerion until after either the legal question is answered and resolved, or his Chair term is over. Viet sounds good to go.

We could. On the other hand, there's precedent, and the only liability is that I (as the person suggesting/executing it) am then eligible for recall (which would still require somebody to actually begin the process, not to mention the vote threshold).

I'll leave it up to you all to decide whether we include Amerion immediately or wait until the LQ.

This is a logical and politically sound route to take.

Viet, furthermore, was quite hesitant when approached in DMs. Oh well.

I guess we're starting without advisors then for now.

That is surprising. Viet indicated to me a while back that he would like to advise on government compliance or something similar.
