The Distress Call
#41

Clairvoyant:
"Sir! Incoming transmission from the command ship!" the communications officer said.
"Put it through," the captain ordered.
The communication light turned on. "There are a number of fishing boats coming off the Transsunerian coast. They're all flying Federation flags."
The Transsunerian frowned. "Why would they take the trouble to fly flags? A Federation flag makes you a Purist or Soorman target. I'd be suspicious."
"Roger that. If you could please hurry back here; we may need you."
The captain turned to the helmsman. "How far are we?"
"Only about two hours out," the helmsman replied.
"Good. And if you wouldn't mind staying with us until we've got this worked out...?" the captain asked the Transsunerian.

Empire
The fleet moved through the water.
"How far are we from Transsuneria?"
"Still about a day, sir."
"Get scouting aircraft up. I want to know what's in store for us when we arrive. Check the location that the other fleet marked."
"Yessir!'

KSS Endurance
"Sir! We have detected some fishing boats, they have Federation flags; should we let them go?" said the communications officer.
"I don't know. There is something weird about this; Why would a fishing boat fly a Federation flag, considering that would make it an easy target for a terrorist group such as Soormans?" replied the captain.
"What should we do?"
"If one of these boats gets any closer, tell the crew to prepare the weapons in case it tries to do something out of the ordinary"
"Roger that."

KSS Liberty
"Wait, what?"
Captain Jarić heard a struggle in the adjacent room. He opened the door, only to find the guards dead and two of the survivors of the submarine. One had a pistol, and another a mysterious package. The captain assumed that the package was filled with sarin. The two survivors entered and closed the door.
"Well, looks like he was capable of threatening us after all," the captain muttered to himself as the survivors put the package on the table. "What the hell do you want?" he said to the Soorman officer.

Not very far from the Transsunerian coast:
Had the naval ships of Darkstrait, Karnetvor and Sedunn been closer they could have observed men diving from each fishing boat. The men stealthily swam for the shores, but the boats continued on their course. Having their rudders firmly tied they continued the approach to the naval ships. After ten minutes small detonators were set of. Football-sized containers cracked open from the detonations releasing clouds of lethal gas, both sarin and mustard gas. The detonations were not detectable from afar, but since especially the mustard gas was of poor quality and old the large gas clouds were visibly yellow. Soormann's meteorologists really were worth all of the drug earned money, the winds were perfect.

Clairvoyant:
"Are you really sure? Federation flags? Is this a joke?" The Transsunerian could not believe it. "Do not be surprised i" he was interrupted by a stressed out voice.
"Sir, gas cloud!" the helmsman shouted.
"So, it has begun. We knew they were planning something. It all makes sense now: the scaled-up dumping, no contact with the mainland, they are being jammed, and now the boats. What we see now is the final push for power in Transsuneria."
Another of the Transsunerians spoke up. "Captain, if you promise us your help, we can direct your fleet to a top secret naval base only 'the old guard' knows about. From there you will be in striking distance of known Purist and Soormann locations."

KSS Liberty:
"This little thing here is only a... teaser. Captain, give us command of this ship or I will smash the package right here! But I can be friendly as well. I will for free warn you about what the desperate Federationalists are up to. They will attack you with gas, so you better leave this area right away. You have no business in Transsuneria, that much all Transsunerians can agree upon. Now, release command of this vessel to me! I have a secret base to locate."

Empire
Men coughed and ran from the gas cloud. Admiral von Feuerland activated the deck loudspeakers: "Gas masks on! Gas masks on!" The sailors grabbed gas and scuba masks. A few lay ominously still on the deck. Many had gotten their masks on but were swaying on their feet. Only a few were standing steady.
"Close all outer hatches!"
The men on deck ran to close the doors before the ominous yellow cloud could reach them. One man looked over the side and yelled into a walkie-talkie through his mask, "There's no one on the boats, sir!"
"Contact the submarines. The men who did this must have escaped. We'll catch them!"

Clairvoyant
"Sir! Incoming transmission from the admiral!"
"Put it through."
"Captain, a gas attack has recently taken place on the fleet via the fishing boats. The men responsible escaped into the water. Track them down and kill them."
"Yes, sir!"
"Sir!" a young officer shouted. "There they are!" He gestured at a porthole.
"Load a torpedo," the captain ordered. He turned to the Transsunerian. "Any sharks in these waters?"
"Um...yes. Why do you ask?"
"Well, if we so much as graze one of them with this torpedo, the blood will be enough to call 'em in from up to a half mile."
"Torpedo loaded, sir!"
"Lock!"
"Target locked, sir!"
"Fire!"

KSS Hoffmann
"S**t! Gas!" Said a sailor before collapsing. Admiral Yezhov, the commander of the fleet, ordered the sailors to put on gas masks and to close the hatches using the loudspeakers. Due to the yellow color of the gas cloud, the rest of the ships noticed it and gave the same orders. However, some sailors could not put their masks on time.

KSS Endurance
"Are the hatches closed?" Asked the captain to one of the officers.
"Yes sir."
"Good. I don't want that gas to enter here and kill us."
Another officer spoke. "Looks like the boats are empty. The men who did this escaped to the coast before the gas was released."
"Are the weapons ready?"
"Yes. The missile launchers are ready to fire."
"Then, you know what to do. Open fire!"

KSS Liberty
Captain Jarić had no choice. He reluctantly surrendered the ship. He and half of the crew were taken hostage. The other half managed to steal a small radio and gas masks and leave in the lifeboats. After using the masks to survive the gas attack, First Officer Dimitri Izmailov, the second in command of the Liberty and one of the few officers in the lifeboats, used the radio to inform the Admiral about their situation. Then, he sent the following message to the other fleets:
"We are the crew of the KSS Liberty. Our ship was hijacked by Soormans. Our captain and some of our comrades were taken hostage. We are stranded at sea in the ship's lifeboats; we don't have supplies or food. Please help us."

"Sir, a ship from Karnetvor was hijacked!"
"Get a sub over there."
A submarine detached from the main body of the fleet and moved toward the Liberty.

Most of the Transsunerian cities had gone dark the last hour. No telephone calls got through and the very limited Internet access was cut off. The Soormann Fighters supported by Purist brigades had begun their main offensive. The Federationalsts mobilised their last resources. Combined, the Soormanns and the Purists had the strength of two infantry divisions but lacked artillery and support units. The Federation had together a full infantry division with capable artillery units and relative secure supply lines. Both sides accused each other of being the aggressor.

Just outside Transsunerian territorial waters a Sedunnic cruiser barely managed to evade an anti-ship missile fired from a known Federation military base. Fire was not returned.

Off the Transsunerian coast:

Unaware of the Darkstraitese submarine's presence, the divers from the fishing boats had no chance to escape the torpedoes. Only a few made it ashore. The fishing boats were obliterated by the accurate missiles from the KSS Endurance.

Aboard the Sedunnic cruiser Nylittverd:
"This is the situation, Captain." A communications officer briefed the captain on the bridge. "Our helicopter will soon arrive at the lifeboats' location. It will together with the submarine from Darkstrait begin the rescue."
"Good. When we have the crew of the Liberty aboard, start making a plan on how to retake the ship, they should know its interior well. Toghether with them a boarding party using smoke and stun grenades should be successful. Hopefully the Darkstrait submarine has some kind of mini submarine to sneak aboard with."
"Yes, captain."
"Also, increase our distance from the gas cloud another 10 km."
"Yes!"

Unknown location:
"The Sedunnic ship escaped the missile. Hopefully they will believe it was the Federationalists that fired it. Too bad we are so backwards we cannot monitor their transmissions" said a man standing before Soormann.
"Right now we barely have the upper hand. We outnumber the Federationalists by more than two to one, but without that artillery our progress is limited. Having foreigners interfere now would be a disaster. Finding that old secret military base should be our priority. The surplus of canons there is absolutely crucial should they interfere."
"Absolutely, Grandmaster!"

The submarine:
"Surfacing in 3...2...1..."
The submarine broke the surface. A soldier opened the top hatch and fired a rocket at the ship. Torpedoes were fired at the ship's engines, crippling it. A specially modified torpedo was fired into the hull of the ship. Instead of exploding, the torpedo began venting helium into the ship. The helium rose to the top of the ship, displacing the oxygen. Some of the gas was vented out, but many of the men lay unconscious by the end of he episode. Two boarding ships raced out from the Darkstraitese fleet, carrying two squads of elite Marines with tranquilizer guns and smoke grenades.

Unknown location, South Pacific Ocean
Four days had passed since the KSS Liberty was hijacked. Ten of the crew members in the lifeboats had died because of the gas attack; of the 70 who escaped the ship, only 60 remained. The small supply of water they had brought with them had recently run out. They were desperate.
"Nobody is coming for us. We are going to die here." Said a sailor. "Nobody knows where we are, not even our own fleet."
Only a few had hopes of being rescued. First Officer Izmailov tried to calm the crew down, with little success.

Suddenly, a sailor sighted something in the sky.
"That's a helicopter... A Sedunnic helicopter!!!"
The crew cheered and celebrated. The First Officer fired a flare gun into the air to make sure that the helicopter had seen them.

They were finally going to be rescued.

KSS Liberty:
The Darkstraitese attack was sudden and unexpected. The Soormann operatives destroyed as much as the could of the electric equipment on the bridge before smashing the sarin bags and finally committing suicide. As the bridge was sealed off from the rest of the ship the gas could not spread. But the bridge was devastated.

Now known location, South Pacific Ocean:
The helicopter brought the most severely injured and incapacitated back to its cruiser, after having reported the location of the lifeboats. It returned back to repeat the proceedure and was soon accompanied by additional helicopters and the Sedunnic cruiser. All of the crew was later returned to the nearest Karnetvoran units.

Intelligence report from the Armed Forces of Sedunn:
Intelligence reports suggest that an until now secret military base in Transsuniera is used to store military surplus and objects prepared for dumping in the sea. A large amounts of cannons, as well as ammunition are stored at that location. Intelligence assets in collaboration with the Federationalists have determined that the Soormann Fighters will try, and likely succeed, to seize that equipment. It is crucial that they do not if the current government is to survive.

Intelligence has located two brigades being located to strategic positions near to the secret base. The defending forces are cut off and will, at this rate of Soormann forces build-up, be heavily outnumbered. With Soormann gaining access to that artillery the Federation is expected to fall quickly. Immediate actions are needed to stop this.

Coordinates are enclosed.
