The Treecuu Way
#71

Ladon System
Pax Dracon

As Teemas entered the hall and saw the different species she realised that she was one of few Treecuu to ever have been in a place with more than one other alien species. At least since the Calamities two hundred years ago. She noted the whispering and first hoped someone would appear to give them a good telling off for their lack of respect, then she reminded herself not to jump to conclusions when dealing with foreign species.

Treecuu etiquette demanded that the head should be bare when indoors, and Teemas let the hood she wore drop to her shoulders. Her complex, hairless yellow skin contrasted sharply against the black robe. She did her best not to let her feelings about the whispering show and to look assertive as she walked with the Emperor further down the hall.

The courtiers and onlookers quieted down as Julianus approached the throne, though they kept their attention on Teemas.  Most had curious expressions, a rare few showed a casual indifference as if they viewed such things as routines, others frowned as they remembered the news of the occupation of Yim III.

Near the base of the throne, not far from two more of the guards from outside, stood a Drakari in a grey robe.  A palace servant, no doubt.  As the Emperor and Teemas approached, the servant offered Teemas a small but beautifully decorated drinking horn.  Liquid could be heard sloshing about within.

"Water from the spring in the palace gardens," the servant said as she held out the horn, "As you had requested of the Emperor.  May it refresh you after your long voyage to our world."

Teemas accepted the horn. Holding it with both hands, she first smelled the water, then she took a gently sip and closed her eyes. After a few moments she opened her eyes and looked at the Emperor.

"The water is of exquisite quality. If I am not mistaken, there is a trace element with the properties of an alkali salt. Perhaps the bedrock around here plays, or has played an important role in neutralising acids."

Teemas drank the rest of the water and gave the horn back to the servant, nodding in acknowledgement.

"Indeed there is, Emissary.  It keeps the pH level of the water in the right conditions for ecosystems to flourish.  One could say that it is in perfect balance."  The Emperor nodded to the servant with a kind and gentle smile, prompting her to do the same as she retreated to the base of the throne.

"However, as much as I would like to continue this exchange of knowledge and pleasantries, I am afraid there is a rather... pressing matter at hand.  The very same one that prompted this meeting, in fact."  Julianus' tone shifted, as if sadness and disappointment had crept into his voice.  "If you wish to save the discussion for tomorrow after you have rested, I completely understand."

Teemas nodded.

"It was a long trip here, but I had plenty of rest, thank you. Now, how can I be of assistance in this pressing matter?"

She knew what the Emperor wanted to discuss.

"You can start by listening to a recounting of events that you are no doubt familiar with, Teemas."

Julianus slowly made his way up the throne's stairs, the anti-grav generators that kept them and the seat itself aloft sinking a mere millimeter under his weight before he sat down and looked at Teemas.  He lifted his hand to pull up a spherical holographic control panel that he began tapping away at, causing the room to dim and activating several other holoprojectors that formed a holographic replica of the Imperial seal.  The imagery seemed to flow like liquid, almost seeming tangible.

"Roughly three galactic standard weeks ago, a unknown probe of xenos origin dropped out of an artificial wormhole near one of our military installations:  The Star Fortress Watchful Guardian."  The holo of the seal shifted, forming the Aryyt't probe and the massive installation of the fortress.  "It was broadcasting a distress signal to Watchful Guardian and it's fleet before jumping to another random system in search of aid.  A distress signal regarding your government, in fact.  Something about an unprovoked invasion of their world."  The young monarch's tone was firm, but unfailingly polite.

All eyes in the throne room on every floor and balcony, from the courtiers to the guards and Julianus himself, turned to Teemas, awaiting her response.

Teemas payed close attention to the Emperor as he spoke and watched the different objects displayed holographically, while keeping an eye on the onlookers to see how they reacted.

"Is it a coincidence that we chose to contact you at this certain time? Of course not. It is indeed the unfortunate launch of that probe that prompted the Treecuu Government to send me here, so that I could explain what it is and what happened on its planet of origin.

I will not call the probe Aryyt't, since that would imply that it was in anyway sanctioned by the Aryyt't Planet-Wide Council, the Aryyt't government.

The transmission from the probe, viewed in full, consists of three parts: first a series of mathematical signals to aid in the decoding of the images that follow. The images show how the Treecuu detonate antimatter devices on the surface of Aryyt't, and then proceed to send an invasion force composed of several streamlined vessels. The last part of the transmission is a distress call, requesting aid to remove the 'alien invaders'.

I can confirm that the images showing the detonation of said antimatter devices are indeed authentic, they were captured by Aryyt't satellites in orbit. The approaching streamlined vessels are indeed Treecuu, on a diplomatic mission to meet the official government. They were filmed by many cameras in a city that was destroyed by the antimatter explosion. However, the chronology of the events is not correct. If you examine the images carefully, especially the position of the small moon visible, you will notice that the antimatter explosion occurred before the alleged invasion. All Treecuu vessels were destroyed, along with most of the planet's defence forces called in to escort them, and a whole continent."

Teemas paused briefly to let her words sink in. She knew that the first antimatter explosion initiated by an individual Aryyt't had knocked out the Aryyt't satellites in orbit, and that the Aryyt't had been forced to use the pictures captured by them to illustrate the second antimatter explosion that the Treecuu indeed had caused. She continued.

"What is the reason behind these unfortunate events? The Aryyt't homeworld, designated by us as Yim Lootuu III, is located near the Treecuu border to the entities known as the ANF and UCP. Sadly these two states have initiated forward-basing of heavy offensive weapons, as well as capable spying arrays, in the form of space stations, or 'outposts' as they call them officially.

The Yim Lootuu System is of utmost strategic importance to our defence, that, and our concern for the people of Aryyt't should they get in the crossfire, is why we approached them and offered the possibility of becoming a protectorate.

Our offer led to a great debate in the Aryyt't society. A religious movement, led by the very same individual who later detonated the antimatter device, opposed this offer, and their government's official stance to accept. She saw an opportunity to get rid of both the Aryyt't military and our diplomatic delegation. She was also the one who launched this probe with mere lies about us and the Aryyt't. Her actions have plunged the planet into a civil war between remaining Government forces and the religious extremist movement, and we are currently conducting peacekeeping operations on behalf of the official Aryyt't Government. We are also currently investigating ANF involvement in arming the extremists."

The Emperor narrowed his eyes as Teemas spoke, the courtiers whispering as they began to debate what they have heard.

"Tell me, Emissary, would it be possible to get one of the Aryyt't here so that we can get there perspective on the situation?  So that they may speak without fear of persecution or intimidation."

"I do not condone their use of antimatter weaponry within their atmosphere with all the lives that were lost as a result, though even I know that one would only use that tactic as an act of desperation against a invading force.  I would like to hear from one of their citizens.  Soon."

"I understand your concerns, Emperor, and I will be happy to help alleviate them. I will request the authorities working with the Aryyt't to find an Aryyt't citizen that would be willing to come here. We are currently helping them to develop a new atmospheric protection suit that will improve their safety and durability, since they cannot survive in what we would call a normal atmosphere.

However, like I said, there are two Aryyt't factions. Would you like, if possible, to have a representative from each side transported here?"

"If at all possible, Emissary, I would like to have one of our ships engage in the transportation.  You did mention that you were curious about experiencing our method of interstellar travel as we departed from the starport, and from how you described your warp drives, speed and time is of the essence so as to allow the talks to resume."

The Emperor had a faint smile spreading across his saurian features.  "It can be considered a gesture of cooperation between our two star nations and further promoting peaceful interaction between races."
