[IC] Sanddorn's state visits II - Sedunn
#11

"Sure, maybe a guard can bring me my sleep mask? Then we are 100% sure I don't forward sensitive info", she picked up on Vimmru's joking tone.

"Well, what means, we are not fully in place? Yes, there is just a basic memorandum for the most part, but from what I heard of the foreign ministry, we're making progress, don't we?", she said to maybe spread a little optimism. "You can count us in for a mission at the Remetull Islands. I'm sure, our forces will not leave you unimpressed!"
Eventually a guard of hers did actually come with a sleep mask into the meeting room, politely greeting both. "Ah, there it is. Then I'll be ready, when you are!", the chancellor said.

immru had a few more things to talk about. Not only did he want to get a feel on whether Gianlucian stances on military interventionism might have changed over the situation in Crabry - they generally did not - he was also inquiring on the change of attitude of GI-Land towards the USI trade-wise and a few more topics.
As for time management, what the Sedunnic king has said turned out to be true. The entire visit and inspection of the soon-to-be-bought weapon systems did just take two hours and Marja has learnt one or the other thing about weapon effeciency on the way. She was still not a supporter of heavy armament, quite the opposite, she would have theoretically liked to disarm GI-Land more again. But that wasn't a position, the potential coalition partners wanted to grant the Greens. Considering what happened in Crabry though....maybe she needs to overthink her own position? She had time to hold those inner discussions on her flight back home in two days.

A little later, back at the hotel

He had made a mistake, Vimmru realised. He should have made himself more available to the press and media before this press conference, now, every other question related to his injuries and the Battle for Hawk. He had been accommodating so far.

"A question for dellm Vimmru" asked a grey-haired man sitting at the back of the room. Vimmru nodded.

"Some say you are not fully back to health, could we..."

"No" Vimmru interrupted. "I must ask you to respect that this conference concerns the meeting between Chancellor Sanddorn and me. Surely you must realise it would be a waste of the Chancellor's time having me answer such questions at this time. I will have to refer you to a later time for these questions."

The room was silent for a few moments, then the journalists resumed asking questions. This time in line with Vimmru's wishes. They asked about the WF reforms, Sanddorn's path to strengthening GI-Land's military and nuclear disarmament, the two nations' committent to lowering CO2 emissions and finally about the situation in Valora and if there would be any CE actions.

Right after the press conference had ended, Vimmru handed over a nosevbradd. It was a young fruit tree in a pot - a traditional Sedunnic gift to friends from foreign places. The two leaders shook hands as cameras were flashing. Mutual respect and trust were in the air.

"That thing is heavy", the chancellor realised while smiling to the press. But it curiously had a scent to it, that she really liked. When the photographing session was finished, Vimmru allowed her to go upstairs to her room again and refresh herself for dinner. He, his wife Aenn and she would meet at a restaurant, that has received quite a few positive reviews on Stream. "Traditional Sedunnic cuisine with a modern twist", the description on its website read. A menu was not available though, which made Marja believe, this was some kind of fancy locality that changed what they want to serve their guests on a whim.

After that interesting read and redrawing parts of her makeup - this time she forwent the lipstick as to not potentially upset the Dellm's wife - she changed into a dark green pantsuit, combed through her hair a few times with her brush and then sat down on the bed, waiting for her guards to tell her it's time to go. "Let's see, what's on television over here", she thought to herself and pressed the "1" button on the remote, which was put on the nightstand. The first channel was actually in Austral. Some international news station from Sedunn. An anchorman with a thick accent commented on rumours, that Ryccia might soon invade its neighbour. The source was an official from the Izaakian secret service allegedly though, so who could really believe that info? Weren't they threatening Ryccia with their base in Qaweritoyu and antagonising them all the time? She shrugged by herself and continued watching the report. Then she saw herself with Vimmru in the background. "The Gianlucian Chancellor is on state visit in Sedunn. King Vimmru and her have met in Goends to talk about the future intensivation of relations between their two nations and have also put a focus on common CO2 reduction goals."
Suddenly a knock was audible. "Marja, the sedan is ready", one of her bodyguards said. She sighed as she would've wished to finish watching the report, but on the other hand she was becoming a little hungry. So probably the timing wasn't that bad. The chancellor switched off the TV and went outside her room, from which she got escorted to the hotel's entrance and got into the car. After a 20 minute ride - the police really made sure, everyone had to stop for her, which made her feel a bit too privileged - the car stopped in front of a building that looked very modern albeit the facade being made out of very natural looking building materials. She looked at her surroundings. This definitely wasn't the city center anymore and she thought, she could make out a "built-up area ends here"-sign, but wasn't sure about it. Street signs do look a little different around the world after all.
Slowly she stepped towards the building with its warm lights shining through the glassy door. A waiter opened it for her. "Wielkohme Vrau Kahntzelehr", he greeted her in Alman with a very, very thick Sedunnic accent. He probably wasn't exactly one of the former students of that language, still Marja felt flattered by how welcomed she was. "Lit, lit", the chancellor answered, feeling somewhat awkward as she was sure, you could say "thank you" in a more formal way, but she never took Sedunnic classes. The waiter didn't seem to bother and probably has said something to her like "I show you, where to sit", but that's just a guess from her side. She eventually arrived at the table, where the Dellm's family was already seated. "Oh, I hope I'm not late already", she joked when seeing them.

Tentesi, or "Little Bell" in Austral, was a cosy restaurant partly built above a tributary to the Dybd river. The lighting in the room together with the soothing sound of flowing water provided for a cosy atmosphere.

The Innienn family stood up as Sanddorn entered the room.

"In establishments such as this, you are not supposed to keep track of time anyway" answered Vimmru with a warm smile. "Please", Vimmru continued, pointing to the chair next to him.

On the opposite side of the table stood his wife Aenn and soon 17 years old daughter Ati. Aenn wore a classic dark green dress and an exquisite golden necklace. Ati wore a yellow dress with a black waistband and it looked like the outfit had been delivered straight from the one of the most fashionable stores in Grovne. Vimmru wore a classic suit, something he was very often seen in. At least the tie was a different one from the one he had during the day's meetings.

The company sat down and Vimmru immediately started reading the menu out loud. It was something like a tradition of people from the northwestern coast of Sedunn. The menu had been stylishly translated into Austral. Ati almost successfully suppressed a laugh as Vimmru twisted his tongue around the more exotic Austral words, but he continued with his usual self-confidence. Aenn softly nudged her. It was apparent that both Aenn and Ati were used to situations such as these, and were not noticeably nervous.

As Vimmru had finished reading the menu, which was rather short containing only one option for fish, beef, pork and vegan for the main courses, he put it back on the table. He looked at Sanddorn.

"I'm not sure I understood all of that myself" he chuckled.

"It's pronounced "sow-tay", not "sow-tee" teased Ati, referring to how Vimmru had pronounced "sauté".

Vimmru winked at Ati. People often noted that Ati had inherited her looks from her mother, but the manners of her father. "Anyway", Vimmru continued, "I will choose the pork. It's crispy and appraently well seasoned. The pasta is made with "jin", the Durum wheat that they are so proud of around here."

Marja has never met Vimmru's family before, when she was foreign minister. She found both, Aenn and Ati, to be very charming persons overall, but especially "normal". Not that she would have expected something different from the Sedunnic head of state's family.
She decided to go for pork too. "You made my mouth water. And also this could be something to cook back at home too. But maybe....Maybe I'll take a little bit of the vegan option as take-out. If possible, of course. I would pay for that myself naturally", she told her hosts slightly pondering. She then laid the menu away and took a look at the ladies sitting in front of her. "So, Ati - I hope my pronounciation is alright - where do you get such a cool dress? Do you have your own designer for that or could I theoretically get that over in GI-Land or Huawan or wherever too?"
She really wanted to not sound like a very old person, no, she was actually interested where to get those types of clothing from. She couldn't pull it off, if she bought this dress, she was aware of that, but it interested her anyway. "And is what your mother is wearing from the same brand or designer?", she added before Ati answered.

"Oh I wish!" Ati looked at her mother with somewhat pleading eyes, then back at Sanddorn. "I bought the dress from Fill g. Allva. They have stores all over Sedunn, and I think in other countries too, but I don't know in GI-Land". She looked at her father for support.

"Oh. I don't know. I have seen them as far as Transsuneria" answered Vimmru doing that thing with his eyes as he tried to remember, that comedians often tried to mimic. "But we do have an expert on GI-Land here. Marja?" He passed the question over to the Chancellor calling her by her first name as customary in Sedunn when not in a work related setting.

Marja chuckled. "Well, I've seen their shops in a few city centres already. I think one is close to the city hall of Atura in Atlantis, if I'm not mistaken..."
The waiter came back and asked, what each of the guests wanted to drink. The chancellor decided on trying a Sedunnic aperitive. When it arrived again, she resumed the topic discussed before. "I have to be honest with you though, I'm less of a fashionista and more of a bookworm."

Indeed she was. Before she got into politics, she was serving an apprenticeship as book seller and even took over a book shop in Atlantis Südstadt. "That extends as far as that parts of the money I've earned as MP or now as governmental official, probably 5 or 10% per quarter, is spent on books. Not just any books though. I'm trying to read up on what other cultures view as art and how their world view is shaped through literature, whether it's a crime book, thriller, fantasy adventure or even a science journal. This reminds me, around half a year ago I bought this very wonderful-looking book. It had a dark blue binding out of cloth and a golden bookmark cord and when I got time to take a look inside the book, I noticed that this seemed to be a Sedunnic classic. Pamm Sponienn was the author's name, Gimsi...something. The English subtitle read 'The Lady from the Crossroads', I think. Do you know that book?", she asked generally into the round.

From how the Innienns reacted, it was obvious they all knew it and that they had fond memories of it. Aenn was excited about this new topic and answered.

"Gimsi'd Lattedjā, or as you correctly remembered in Austral. It's a real classic, there's probably no Sedunnic child who haven't read or have had it read to them. When I was a teacher I used to read a chapter once every day to the class."

Aenn then asked about what the chancellor had thought about the book and if she ever saw the comic book that had been inspired by the book. It was obvious that Aenn was passionate about literature. As Sanddorn answered, Aenn thought about books from GI-Land that she had read.

"Is the book... What should I call it in Austral... Walking through Kuck? Is it still something people read a lot? It was one of the essentials in one of the courses at the university" asked Aenn.

"Ah, yeah, I know what you mean. Leopold Richter. A good and known writer of his time. His travel reports through the, at that time much more dense, jungles of Lesser GI-Land were inspiring for many. His greatest work was a novel though called 'Dr. Morsch'. 'Morsch' is Alman for 'rotten', at least when we're talking about trees, and it was a play of words in that case, because the protagonist has found a witch at a rotten tree. An evil witch, who granted the protagonist eternal youth and that the love of his life will be struck by the heart-shaped arrow. This came with a price though, a price of moral corruption in any sense you can imagine."

After a short pause, Marja added: "That's a book pupils read during the A-levels nowadays, I think. Other than that more modern and international literature is taught about. That's what our minister of education has told me at least. And you came into contact with that kind of literature, because...?"

Right when she expected an answer, the waiter came with the entrées for the table. It looked like a salad, it tasted like a salad, but in it were tiny yellow balls that reminded the chancellor of couscous or millet. She hoped to get an explanation of what she's eating from one of her hosts in between the casual chitchat.

"It's called 'vigo', it's a wheat product" said Vimmru, perceptive as always.

Aenn and Ati looked at Vimmru, worried that it was one of his jokes that no one understood, but they were relieved to see that the chancellor seemed to understand what it was all about.

Aenn proceeded to answer Sanddorn's question.

"The basic course had a selection of literature typical of their time and nation. We also read the Sedunnic explorer Tynn Lierjnienn's 'Travel Chronicles', but they are poetic and mix facts with myth, so it provides a nice contrast to Richter's reports, serving as an example of the difference between antique and more modern styles."

Ati listened politely to the discussion about the two books, but she hoped it wouldn't turn into one of her mothers monologues about old authors. She considered hijacking the discussion; she would likely get away with it, being so young and inexperienced in their eyes. But thinking some more about it, she realised this was so much more preferable compared to what the family had gone through the last weeks, with the siege of Hawk and all that and realised she was happy about everything going back to normal. She decided to enjoy the moment.

An hour had almost passed, and they had finished the entrée and the main course. It was soon time for dessert. Vimmru had insisted that the chancellor should try the dimmyj, the famous Sedunnic pastry made of baked almond paste, dried fruit and whipped cream. The restaurant said that theirs was prepared in the traditional way with less sugar, but with a twist: a dash of plum liqueur.

As the waiter served the dessert with a hot drink, Vimmru spoke up.

"Gianluca is very fond of hot chocolate unless my memory fails me. Is that a favourite for you too, Marja? Do you have a preferred blend or way to prepare it too?"
