President Palmann meets Gianluca IV
#1

President Emil Palmann wandered back and forth impatiently by his car at landingstrip B1 at Hujfelt Airport, just outside the Transsunerian captial Niulandsheim. Two planes had already landed, but none of them was Gianlucan. It almost felt like the Sedunners running the airport had queued the diplomatic plane from GI-Land just to let their fancy military transports land first, but the Gianlucans had been slightly delayed due to some bad weather halfway there.

Palmann checked the time. Four minutes left. From the other side of strip he could hear shouting. A Sedunnic officer was hurrying along the strip, talking in a walkie-talkie, apparently launching his entire aresenal of profanities at some poor guy at the other end. He came closer and Palmann could hear better.

"... and move those fat asses now! You've got three minutes!" the officer shouted in gentleman's Sedunnic, and finished the transmission with a snappy 'Out!'.

There was a loud roar as a Sedunnic trasport plane further down the strip started its engines. It was apparent that it would block the way for the Gianlucans, but the president hadn't noticed it until now.

"Problems?" Palmann asked as the Sedunner passed him.

"Soon not any more, President", the officer responded and saluted him.

"An engine acted up, but should be fine now" he added as he continued running down the strip.

He was correct, and the plane slowly accelerated towards one of the new hangars off the field. A few minutes later the Gianlucan plane landed and taxied to where Palmann was waiting, along with the newly formed Presidential Guard.

It was a weird feeling for Gianluca as he sat in the plane that flew him to Transsuneria. A nation the former nation of Atlantis had ties to a few decades ago, but since then neither Atlantis nor GI-Land maintained those ties.
Instead Transsuneria was politically shaking. Peacekeeping forces of Karnetvor and Sedunn are part of the country since the second civil war.
What could the Gianlucian leader expect to happen at this meeting? Does President Palmann want to introduce relations to his country maybe through trade? Can GI-Land help otherwise stabilising the situation in Transsuneria and how high is the risk of Transsuneria getting unstable again?
He had many questions, some maybe can get answered by Palmann, some he can answer by himself after his meeting.

The plane landed on an airfield that looked a bit more like something from the military than something a commercial airline would use. "I guess, I could've expected that", Gianluca thought for himself.

He stood up and went to the exit. As he left the plane he waved with his hand for journalists which are eventually present. He looked for President Palmann and approached him.

"I'm honoured to be here. Hello, Mr. President."

"Eure Hoheit, herzlich willkommen in Transsuneria. Es ist auch eine große Ehre, Sie hier zu haben." Palmann responded. His accent was somewhat similar to when Atlantics spoke German.

"I hope you don't mind continuing in Austral. My German is very limited, unfortunately, and even though we likely would understand each other speaking our respective languages. But not without great effort, that is."

Palmann shook hands with Gianluca, and they both turned towards the flashing cameras. They then walked down the red carpet that lead to a black car with tinted windows, passing the Presidential Guard that evidentially had borrowed much of their drill from the Sedunners that were helping them rebuild their army.

The Transsunerians had been working tirelessly night and day to tidy up the surroundings along the short highway to the capital, but there was still evidence of the misery the country had endured until a few years ago. After having passed the last checkpoint, Niulandsheim at first almost looked more like a giant construction site than a city, but it wasn't war reparations. President Palmann's and his predecessor's policies encouraging foreign investors had resulted in a lot of renovation projects, and especially global banks had been enticed by generous taxes and started building local offices. The investment rate had decreased greatly however since Palmann had failed to fulfil his promise of removing the checkpoints and roadblocks by the winter, and many construction projects had been halted.

The Residens Silverfontain*, the president's residence, and its lush palm tree garden stood out from the surrounding blocks with a bright white facade, and absence of scaffolding. The car's tinted windows helped protect against the bright reflections from an elaborate fountain as the car parked at the entrance of the Residence. The two leaders exited the car and where shown inside the building. Finally they sat down on a terrace with a good view of the garden, avoiding showing much of the interior of the residence since it hadn't been prioritised when budgeting for the renovations. Refreshing drinks were served.

"Your highness, we are very honoured by your visit and hope you will feel right at home on this humble terrace. I would like to ask if there perhaps is a certain place you would like to visit after our lunch here, so that it might be arranged in good time?" Palmann asked.

Gianluca had mixed feelings when Palmann and he drove through Niulandsheim.
Everything he saw didn't look at all, like he would have imagined. Of course he was prepared for not looking at a very nice architecture he's used to from GI-Land or Erinor, but he wouldn't have expected either, that it does look as good as it was.
Maybe that was one more evidence that the rule "Don't base your expectations on biases" is valid. Especially if you're a head of state.

"First of all, I'm very honoured too and I am surprised on how good everything looks here! I mean, I don't want you to feel ridiculed by me - you still have a long way to go, but that you know already. It's just.....It looks like you're on a very good way", he tried to give his honest feelings words with that and hoped, Palmann would be a bit flattered about the good critique.

He turned his head away from the Transsunerian leader and looked over the terrace onto Transsuneria - at least the bit he could see from here.

"Well - I'm here officially, so if you've got any monuments or memorials for fallen soldiers of your civil wars, that's maybe a kind of thing, I should see. Otherwise not only your culture - especially food and beverage culture - but also how the peacekeeping troops from Erinor, Karnetvor and Sedunn blend in into your daily life, would highly interest me."

Gianluca let those sentences sink in, hoping he didn't already made a mistake, e.g. with the question about civil war memorials.
