[IC] 2018 Football World Championship
#1

It's 9 pm in a secluded room inside a shopping mall in Südtor, where a studio got set up for TV. Today's the day that will decide, who will have luck in the group stage and who will have a difficult task to solve in the tournament, but first of all, the boss of the Gianlucian Football Association (GIF; GIscher Fußballverband) reveals the mascot and theme of this year's World Cup. Alluding to the mascot, which is a cat - the national animal of GI-Land - the theme is "A purrfect tournament".
The cat itself is dressed up in the new home kit of the Gianlucian national team and resembles one of the former royal pets. This is perhaps why it got named after him, its name is Bambam I.

Now the exciting part of the event is beginning: The drawing of the groups of the Men's FWC!
There are two bowls prepared with several yellow balls inside them. In one bowl are three of those, one is marked with blue dots too, in the other are nine of those.
We get explained that the one marked with blue dots is the ball of GI-Land, which will be the head of Group A, while the other three balls are the ones of the IFF and Sedunn. One of both will be the head of Group B, the other of Group C.
Why is that?
Because GI-Land got 1st last time and is the host, the IFF got 2nd last time and Sedunn got third.

On purpose GI-Land gets taken out of bowl 1 first, so it can be the head of Group A, after that the moderator picks the ball of the IFF, which will be the head of Group B. This leaves Sedunn as head of Group C.
The next team getting chosen will be put into the group of GI-Land. After a bit of rambling it's clear, that GI-Land's first game will be against Erinor.
This continues until all groups got drawn:

GROUP A
GI-Land
Erinor
TSSS
Beepee

GROUP B
IFF
Bruuma
Sereva
Huawan

GROUP C
Sedunn
Transsuneria
Bzerneleg
Esfalsa

All teams placing first and second in the groups will move on to the quarter finals, while only the two best 3rd places will move on to the QFs as well.
The exact gameplan can be seen here.

Last but not least the Women's World Cup gets drawn. Since only 11 teams are participating though, the tournament will be a little different.
All teams, except the host, will be drawn into two groups out of five. The two best teams of each group will move on to the Quarter Finals, but the third and fourth places of each group will get together with the host into a play-off group. The best four teams of the play-off group will continue their journey to glory too.
Since there isn't an ancestor for the Women's competition to determine the group heads, it's all random.
Following groups got drawn:

GROUP A
Sereva
Esfalsa
Bzerneleg
IFF
Huawan

GROUP B
TSSS
Transsuneria
Sedunn
Puerto Pollo
Erinor

PLAY OFF GROUP
GI-Land
A3
A4
B3
B4

After everything's settled and announced, everyone is going home happily. Or at least some people are, maybe some are also already planning on how to handle the more or less difficult tasks, they will encounter in their tournament.
We will see how well all teams will do, when the tournament starts off tomorrow with the opening game of the Men's tournament: GI-Land vs. Erinor!

(OOC: Ryccia enters now with the teams of Ryccia, Tigon, IU, Irykia (both competitions) and the Siculites or Kyrini (only female). This means we got 16 competitors in both tournaments playing in four groups consisting of four teams. The group heads in the tournament are the teams of GI-Land, the IFF, Sedunn and Erinor (since Sam and Rebeltopia aren't participating). We got the following groups drawn for the male tournament:

GROUP A
GI-Land
TSSS
Ryccia
Sereva

GROUP B
IFF
Irykia
Beepee
Huawan

GROUP C
Erinor
IU
Tigon
Transsuneria

GROUP D
Sedunn
Bruuma
Bzerneleg
Esfalsa

For the women's tournament only GI-Land is set to be head of group A. The rest is random.

GROUP A
GI-Land
Sereva
Bzerneleg
Transsuneria

GROUP B
Irykia
Huawan
IU
TSSS

GROUP C
Sedunn
Siculites
Tigon
Esfalsa

GROUP D
Ryccia
Erinor
IFF
Puerto Pollo

The first two teams of each group will move into the Quarter Finals. The rest stays the same. Now for real: Have fun and sorry for the inconveniences :S)

It was an exciting first day in the Men's World Championship 2018, even with little surprises.
Sedunn, last time 3rd, got humiliated by newcomer Bruuma in Group D, while in Group A Ryccia can settle itself on 1st place before the duel against GI-Land on the next matchday.
One of the more crazy games could get seen in Group B, where Huawan equalised a 0-3 deficit and made it to a 5-3 victory for them!

The first decisions were made today. GI-Land qualified for the quarter finals, while the direct match of TSSS and Ryccia will decide, who fill follow from Group A.
In Group B however no team has qualified for the knockout stage just yet. The final matchday tomorrow will show us, who's good enough for getting further in the competition. Same applies for Group C, where the IU is already out of the tournament, but still can make it possible for Transsuneria to continue to participate in this year's FWC. Therefore the IU needs to win its next game against Tigon, while Transsuneria needs to win against Erinor.
Group D is just as tight and Sedunn really needs a second lucky punch by the football god to make it through the Group stage.

"We were focused very much, but the Ryccians were as well and that's why it was a very tight match. I guess, Szalok's goal in the 87th minute or so, even though we made this play perfectly, was in the end very lucky also. You shouldn't underestimate the Ryccians for sure and of course no other competitor either. Our focus is now on the last game against Sereva and we will do our best to extend our winning streak even further."

A delightful tournament, with a delightful mascot. We were delighted to do well in our last match and hope to keep a little momentum into the next match. Everything here is delightful.

"It was not the result we were looking for," Natalia Milland, head coach of the Esfalsan team, commented to reporters after her team's second consecutive scoreless draw. "We were not able to capitalize on our opportunities and exploit our opponents' weaknesses. I would not wish to belittle our players' efforts, as I know that they have been hard at work training for this event, but we are treading on thin ice. Without any true ability to counterattack, were are relying too heavily on our defense to prevent the draw from turning to a loss. That is something that we certainly cannot accept, especially in such a close field."

Assistant coach Barry Wun, standing next to Milland, was more positive. "A win would have certainly been better, but I think that our draw against Bruuma, the group leaders, suggests our defense is more solid than expected. It was not ideal, but in some areas our performance exceeded expectations. I look forward to our next game against Sedunn; as we are only one point away from qualifying for the quarter-finals, a solid performance here may pull us through. Of course, given such a close field, only time will tell."

Some surprises happened today including two games with very high scores that changed the tables quite much.
First of all the host of the tournament couldn't advance into the knock-out stage perfectly. The last game got last 0-5 against the autonomous region Sereva of the Pacifican neighbour Erinor. Also the draw against TSSS wasn't enough for Ryccia to compete further in the competition. Due to TSSS having scored 7 goals, while Ryccia only scored 3 in the group stage, TSSS may advance although having the same amount of points and the same goal difference than the team of the Middle South Pacific.
In Group B the last tournament's 2nd place surprisingly did fail the group stage this time. The cause of this is Irykia having not won the game against Beepee. A low score of 1-0 saved Beepee and in the end only Huawan. The latter has to play against the host in the quarter finals now.
The results of Group C were perhaps the most surprising ones. Transsuneria somehow made it through the group stage as 2nd place as Tigon, the team everyone bet on that they would advance, lost high against the Imperial Union. Not less than 3-10 was the score in the end, which equals a total humiliation for them, but the most luck a small country like Transsuneria can have in such a tournament.
Group D was perhaps the most boring group this matchday as the favourites won their games. Especially Bruuma could show once again, that a different political mindset doesn't automatically mean, they can't play football. On the contrary they ended the game with 10(!)-1, which makes them the No. 1 favourite team for winning this year's FWC.

Results

Group A
SER-GIL    5-0
SSS-RYC   0-0

Group B
PEH-IFF    0-0
IRY-BPE    0-1

Group C
TRS-ERI   0-0
IUN-TIG   10-3

Group D
ESF-SED  0-4
BRM-BZE 10-1
