[DISCUSSION] Forum Reorganization
#31

Square looks nice, but isn’t as versatile. I wouldn’t mind us having a premium theme.

I think several people (myself included) wouldn't mind putting down 20 bucks for something that helps the community. I don't think funding will be an issue per se, so long as we don't overdo it and start buying 10 themes and changing our minds every week.

We could fund it with pocket Charters, ofc.

Say we settle on going with a premium theme? What happens going forward? Should someone pick 5 to 10 viable themes and the administration team set up a poll to decide which one to purchase?

I'd suggest something like:
- Peeps nominate themes, any theme that gets a second goes into the next round
- Admins may now reject themes based purely on technical grounds
- What's left over goes to a IRV vote

But honestly, I wouldn't answer the theme question until we have a universal design/style guide for TSP.

Could we go the other way?

- Admins nominate a handful of themes
- Everyone gets a nomination to decide which themes move on
- IRV for anything with 2+ nominations

What is the relationship between a design guide and a theme? Unless that theme can be re-themed?

The universal design guide lays out our colors, our logos, etc.;

with that in mind, we can then pick a professional theme that meeds our requirements and most closely matches the style. some modifications to a bought theme are possible.

I think rebeltopia's voting order makes more sense, if this is something that's having real money spent on it we probably should put more stress on making sure it's actually useful and not a waste, which I think would be better assured if it's the admins who are initially making the list of possible themes that will then be voted on by the others.

If we have the design for everything decided on then we can try to pick a theme that compliments it instead of being forced to design around whatever theme we chose. Of course, there could be an argument for it being better to pick a theme and then pick a design that compliments the theme but I think the former makes more sense.

Also, the new theme needs to make links to important threads more visible and omit the Calendar, Help,... buttons at the top.

Square is the easiest to customize in these aspects. Although I personally prefer Flatty which is also free and looks good.

Flatty unfortunately isn’t a responsive theme. It just looks that way. Links on any theme are easily altered, though.

I’m personally not too concerned with whether a theme is chosen before or after all the “unified design” decisions are made. One benefit of premium themes is that they’re typically easier to customize color- and image-wise. The decision ultimately boils down to which features we want and what genre of design we want (eg Vietnam prefers flat design).
