2020 Leaders Debate
#1

Virginia Vogélium stepped on the podium to give her initial speech.

"Honourable delegates! Welcome to the 2020 Leaders Debate. We have seen a great year with a record-high number of members and the completion of this World Forum by the great Christian Strunk. What a year it was! We have also seen a lot of activity with many proposals going through and I am glad we were able to achieve such great work. I can only hope that next year is going to bring more interesting proposals moving forward in our great institution. For this Leaders Debate, I wish to divert a little bit from the rules we have given ourselves as an institution to allow for the maximum participation of our members. I ask the delegations to refrain from replying directly to the speeches until after the first round of initial speeches as been made. And the invitation has been sent to all the nations, who knows, maybe they'll want to join our Assembly afterwards, so bear in mind that the matters we discuss here may or may not concern only the World Forum but I believe it can concern the entirety of the world as we know it. With all that being said, I declare open the 2020 Leaders Debate and I invite President Columbo Septimum to give the initial remarks as established by the rules."

President Septimum was waiting on the side of the podium and exchange a good handshake with Virginia Vogélium as she stepped down from the podium.

"Greetings delegates from the nation of Anserisa. As the first nation able to address this assembly, I would like to address some problems which I believe have not been addressed much this year and that I hope we can address next year. And that is the protection of our environment. Climate change is impacting the lives of so many of our fellow citizens in Anserisa, in the Rainbow Islands, in Cordilia, in Bailtem, everywhere in Pacifica. Earlier this year, due to heavy rainfall, we had a small disaster with a landslide near Alisa, killing 15 people. It might seem so trivial for many nations, but this never happened before. Never before have we seen such heavy rains in our nation. Climate change has affected our way of life and will continue to be amplified if we don't act now. I urge the delegates to consider acting on this matter instead of some petty feuds between nations. We have pressing matters at hand and I believe that climate change needs to be addressed head on. Nuclear warheads will not deter the challenges we face while protecting our environment. That will be all for my opening remarks, I am grateful for the delegates to have elected the small nation of Anserisa for the speakership earlier this year which allowed us to feel considered as members of full right of the international community. Have a good Leaders Debate everyone."

The Prime minister of Izaakia Valkyrie Mountbatten

“Good day my fellow leaders and delegates, it seems we are finally ending this rather tense year. A year that has seen some rather worrying trends continue and accelerate. One of these trends, which we at the edges of the world have seen more than all others is the impact of climate change, with the icecaps on our continent retreating at an ever accelerating rate, and storms becoming far more ferocious with the warming oceans. Although these ever greater habitable zones may improve life in izaakia as the ice retreats, we are highly concerned of the impact on our regions of Montacia and Brodlancia as well as regions further adrift, for climate change will cause famine, droughts and disasters in less fortunate areas of the world, which inevitably will lead to conflict and instability. We therefore, would like to propose greater action on climate change.
One of the other disturbing trends that we have seen is the rise of protectionist and war like supra-national organisations, and their increasingly belligerent behaviour, threatening nuclear attacks, international piracy and total war. Three things that this organisation should be doing more to address, therefore, we would like to propose the strengthening of the WF, particularly in its protection of international trade and commitment to reducing tariffs and boundaries in fair trade and we would like to suggest the formation of a security council to prevent acts of war and piracy, and to act in global unity. For this Forum is currently weak when it should be strong, we believe in universal values, but we are not as an international community currently able or perhaps willing to protect those common rights to liberty, equality and security. I believe we must act before it is too late.
I thank you for your time and consideration. “
Gianni: “Izaakia, I hate you so much. You’re such a good bad guy. Must be because of your genes“.

Gianluca IV was the next in turn. The first statements made by President Septimum and, unfortunately also, by Prime Minister Mountbatten were good and already laid out much of the stuff he could have thought of saying.

"Mrs. Speaker, Ladies and Gentlemen", he bit his lip as he looked down onto his notes on the lectern.
"According to the rules set out in the beginning, I will refrain from directly answering my previous lecturers, however please allow me to say, that I am completely on your side, when it comes to climate change. We have experienced strong weathers this year already, most notably a flood in Bruuma, mass deaths of fish in Beepee and strong tropical storms - some already called them cyclones - near FiHami. I don't know, how your view is on all of this, but my view is, that there cannot be any stronger warning signs than these. Mother nature is screaming at us with ferocity and is shooting bright red glaring rockets at humanity with all her might. Some might argue, that this is our new reality and we just have to deal with the consequences, but can continue living like we did the last few decades, but I say: This is one of the great filters and our actions will decide, whether humanity can survive in the long-run or not.
The Izaakian delegation has offered a Pacifican Climate Conference earlier this year. GI-Land was turning the invitation down. I still do not see this as a mistake, because my opinion stands, that the World Forum is the best place to find common grounds on how to combat climate change and its consequences. I sincerely hope, next year's Speakers will work towards this.

In regards of the supranational organisations, I might answer later. What is more important to me, is the role of the World Forum and its stance in the world. Mr. Strunk has finally finished the job, he and the colleagues that followed should have finished a long while ago already. But since then, the World Forum has not only the means to work efficiently and effictively, it does so too. Still I can always read in the news or interpret out of messages I receive from all around Pacifica, that the WF is still not considered as being anything good. Too ineffective, too compromised, too whatever. We need reforms here, reforms there, so we are more like...No!

Don't you have in mind anymore, what happened to all the other organisations prior to the WF, which had similar goals to us? They are either non-existant anymore or they still exist, but are relatively forgotten now or they were never effective, because their rule- and framework was too tight.
I am very happy, we can finally have an organisation, where nations of different political approaches can come together and discuss matters in a civil manner. Something that is not an alliance and only has a comparatively loose framework built around international law.
It makes me sad and also worries me, that many representatives seem to glance over this fact and want to achieve changes, that will ultimately make more out of this organisation than it shall be. Those would then ultimately lead to everything, that you attribute to the World Forum right now. It will become ineffective and can't be taken seriously anymore. So let it be assured: GI-Land will be and stay in the way, if anyone tries to make this happen. The World Forum shall stay the World Forum. Thank you."
Signed

Prime Minister Kilaui Kuri was next to take her stand, and she stood confidently to the podium, ready to make her introductory speech.

"Hello, fellow members of the World Forum, I am the current Prime Minister of FiHami. I wish to follow up on the perils of the Climate Crisis currently befalling our world. We are seeing an increasing amount of extreme weather events as our planet continues rising in temperature at astounding rates. We in FiHami have been pushing for minimizing our impact to the environment, but there is so much more to be done. I am positive that our World Forum delegate, Lia Kilaweioni, is working hard to figure out the best way to combat this unprecedented crisis.

Not only do we face an ongoing climate crisis, we also face unprecedented instability worldwide, and finding a peaceful solution to these issues is an imperative. There is inequality in so many places, racial tensions rising, conflicts between friends and neighbors on the world stage.

A dear friend of mine once said that liberty and peace must be fought for, and the day we become complacent in the status quo is the day that we let all the evil in the world win. This dear friend of mine constantly put her life on the line for the fight for freedom and peace from a very young age, and ultimately died defending the rights of people to live as they wish, freely, with all the opportunity in the world to fight for the destiny they desire for them and their loved ones. I wish to stand before my fellow delegates today, and inspire them to something that I strongly believe is the heart of the World Forum, and what I advocated for following the decision to apply for membership status in the World Forum last year with my dear friend. Peace and Liberty, for all."

At her final word, she looked down, closing her eyes solemnly, then looked back up, at the rest of the leaders in the room.

"Kirifi, Delegates." She made a large circle with her hands, then left the podium for the next person to step up.

It was King Vimmru of Sedunn's turn.

"It is almost four years since I sent the letter inviting all leaders here to discuss the foundation of this organisation. The response it got still fills my heart with joy. And I am so proud to see what we have built together! We already help improve life for millions across the globe, and especially the Committees deserve a special mention. Their daily work is not always glamorous and is sometimes far from the spotlights and glimmers of fame and celebration.

We have indeed established a solid framework to continue building on. For I believe we can and should strive to be more than we are. But we must not forget what I like to think is in the World Forum's DNA: cooperation because we want to, not because we are forced to, if you forgive me for quoting myself. I believe it is possible to combine this ideal with stronger measures against climate change and infringements on international law."
