The election, as laid out in Articles 2 and 4 of the Elections Act, consists of a single round of voting held via Instant-Runoff Vote and open to all legislators who gained their status prior to the start of the declarations period.
HOW TO VOTE
There are two ways of casting a vote. In both cases, the act of voting involves listing some or all candidates in descending order of preference. The option to re-open nominations is considered a candidate for the purposes of voting.
A public vote may be cast via the Public Voting Booth, which will print the vote as a reply to a designated voting thread.
A private vote may be cast via the Private Voting Booth, which will send the vote as a message to an account accessible only by the Election Commissioner. Every private vote is assigned a reference code known only to each individual voter, so that they identify their vote once the tally is released.
Please consider time zone differences when reviewing the deadline for each stage in the election. It is your responsibility to ensure that you comply with all legal requirements within the mandated time frames (time zone conversion).
INTERPRETATION OF VOTES
There are certain circumstances in which the Election Commissioner will exercise their discretion to determine whether a vote is valid. The following is a non-exhaustive list of cases where the Commissioner may exercise their discretion:
A vote where a candidate is mentioned more than once consecutively will be read as containing a single preference for said candidate.
A vote where a candidate is mentioned more than once non-consecutively will be considered invalid and will be excluded from the tally.
A vote that contains preferences for candidates not listed on the official ballot will have those preferences deemed invalid and excluded from the tally, but the vote itself will be deemed valid as long as it contains preferences for candidates listed on the official ballot.
A vote that has been edited will be considered invalid and will excluded from the tally.
A vote cast by an ineligible individual will be considered invalid and will be excluded from the tally.
A vote cast after the voting period has ended will be considered invalid and will be excluded from the tally.
The Commissioner will only exercise discretion on the matter of the names of candidates in the event that candidate names are mentioned with improper punctuation, but not in cases where candidate names are mistyped or nicknames are used, unless the use of such nicknames is coordinated with, and accepted by, the Commissioner for inclusion in the ballot prior to the casting of the relevant vote.
