The Treecuu Way

Teemas entered the skycar after the Emperor. She was very impressed by the interior, but maintained a neutral face.

"I only know the very basics of the principle behind the propulsion chosen for our vessels" Teemas smiled. By saying that the method in use by the Treecuu was an active choice she wanted to imply that other methods had been ruled out. The truth was that the Treecuu hadn't manage to perfect any other viable alternatives yet. She continued.

"By letting what we call exotic particles react in a chamber within the hull of the ship, enough energy is obtained to be able to warp the space around the ship by releasing it through nacelles outside the primary hull. In front of the ship, space contracts, and behind it, it expands back, continuously reducing the distance that needs to be travelled."

"What is the Drakari method of FTL travel, Emperor?"

Julianus reclined into his seat just as the pilot finished preparations for take-off.  With a simple command in the Drakari language from the Emperor, the pilot maneuvered the skycar out of the hangar and carefully merged with the traffic of the capital.

"Well..." the young monarch said, "My people enter a realm that we call Warp Space as a means of travelling between star systems.  From what I recall from my lessons in physics as a boy, the warp engines use particle accelerations to generate portals similar to that of wormholes as entrances to Warp Space, though nowhere near as quick as we are told wormhole travel is.  Our ships then enter these portals, traveling through the currents of that strange realm until we reach our destination, with the estimated time of arrival heavily depending on how far the destination is."

"That's not to say that Warp Space is not without it's risks.  Without precise calculations, a vessel can be pulled out by a system's center of gravity such as it's star or the planetary body they wish to arrive at.  Some can end up at the system's edge and have to trudge through at impulse speeds.  And..." Julianus shuddered as he thought back.

"The... radiation, or energy, or manifestations within Warp Space can have an effect on the minds of a vessel's passengers or crew if shielding fails or if they stare too long into it's depths.  Some have gone mad, screaming about 'ancient horrors', others are rendered catatonic for a brief period of time, others have more benign reactions similar to that of a religious epiphany and claim to have seen a 'Great Cosmic Truth'.  Short-lived cults have sprung up as a result."

Bridge, Himiko's Revenge

The bridge of the Himiko’s Revenge was deathly quiet as Himiko translated the Taam Yim’s response in real time. Kensei grinned as he noted the subtle changes in the speed and accuracy of Himiko’s translations between the few exchanges they’ve had so far with the Treecu.

Once Himiko finished translating the Treecu’s message, Akira spoke, “There will not be any hostilities between us unless you choose to initiate them, huh… An interesting choice of words for a species that just conquered an inhabited world… Himiko relay the following message: Your request to meet the government of the Venterran Federation has been granted.  You have been granted permission to dispatch only one shuttle containing your main party with a two-fighter escort. If you lack fighters we will dispatch two drones to escort you to our Portside hangar, which will be prepared for your arrival. Do note that while our ship is primarily oxygen based atmosphere, you will be passing several corridors with a carbon dioxide based atmosphere, so if you can not survive in such conditions, please bring an environmental suit for your party. Fleet Commander Kensei, out.”

“Yes sir. However, shouldn’t we tell them of our current gravity levels?” asked Himiko.

“There’s no need to tell them that we work under conditions of high gravity when we are going to lower the gravity of the ship.” Replied Kensei sharply. He then continued, “Order the crew outside the bridge to wear their combat uniforms and that we will be lowering the ship’s gravity for the duration of the meeting.”

“What about us sir?” asked one of the bridge crew.

“You’ll remain here and monitor the Frigate. If they fail to comply paint them on our targeting system, and issue the standard warning.” Responded Kensei.

The crewman stood up briefly to salute and acknowledge the Commander’s orders before sitting down and returning to his duties.

A brief second later the Commander smirked ever so slightly as his eyes gleamed with mischief. Looking around at the crew he spoke, “I’m certain that the Treecu will try something after our little arrogant message, and I’d like to feed their preconceptions of our kind.”

“Sir?” asked one of the bridge crew puzzled.

“Himiko, which one of our Estella-C frigates can drift near their frigate?” asked Kensei.

“That would be the VNS Star Lambda located in hangar 02. I recommend we jettison our metallic waste to cement your idea that the ship is more decrepit than it seems.”

“Excellent idea. See to it that the Captain of Star Lambda is informed of the plan and deploys once their shuttle is in view. I will be heading to the officer’s briefing room to prepare for our ‘guests’ and contact the Ceres Council.”

Teemas almost had to climb to get seated. She felt like a child, and she didn't like to feel inferior. She reminded herself that the emperor was much younger than her, at least in the experience sense.

"Fascinating" she responded thoughtfully. "Despite possible side effects, it would be interesting to experience your way of doing it. Travelling with our warp drive is often uneventful, but just as the drive is engaged, accelerating to higher velocities, there is an almost bewitching display of colours from the surrounding space. I am afraid it is hard to explain, but it looks like an orderly explosion."

"Ah..." the Emperor nodded as he listened, "that sounds lovely, Teemas.  I would very much want to see that one day.  Pardon me for assuming, but I take it this phenomena is a result of relativistic blue shifting in front of the craft?"

The pilot made sure that the skycar moved at a safe speed through the capital, quickly pressing something on the interface to lower the tint from the windows so that Julianus and Teemas could look out at the city as they made their way through the air.

"How long can you hold your breath, Tiro?" Eeract smiled.

"Bah. You insectoids and your suspended auxiliary breathing system..." Tiro sighed.

While the Treecuu insectoids could in essence hold their breath indefinitely in most environments, though at a decreasing level of conciousness, the Treecuu amphibians could "only" survive for about an hour without oxygen air.

"Those corridors won't be a problem, but I will bring a small rebreather mask just in case" Tiro added.

Tiro stood up from her chair and reached for her long black robe. "Alright, Eeract chose one of your crew and follow me to the hangar. We'll take the Nuum."

"Oh, and decline their offer of an escort. Also, order the Taam Yim to conduct a full quantum scan of the Venterran ships, then return to Treecuu space at maximun speed. We will do quite well on our own."

Eeract stood at attention to confirm the order.

The Nuum was a repurposed landing shuttle of the same class as the Surface Warfare Forces used. Their FTL capabilities, manoeuvrability and elegant design had made them popular among other state officials. This shuttle class was also the first among the Treecuu FTL vessels not to have the warp nacelles mounted on wing-like constructions, which made them well-suited for smaller hangars, such as the one aboard the Taam Yim.

Hangar doors at the aft of the frigate soon opened and a glossy white shuttle began its short voyage towards the Himiko's Revenge.

"I am not entirely sure, but I believe it has something to do with certain particles being excited due to the sudden warping of space, then they release radiation while returning to their normal state" Teemas answered politely. She nodded at one of the windows.

"This is quite a view too, Emperor. I am not familiar with Drakari architecture, is this an old city and is it typical for your civilisation?"

"The capital has been developed for thousands of years, Emissary.  The Jewel of the Empire, some have taken to calling it.  It's been the home of my family for generations beyond counting..."  The Emperor let out a happy sigh as he looked at buildings old and new.  "We've been careful to ensure that our more ancient buildings are carefully preserved, even incorporated their designs into our modern skyscrapers."

He looked over at his guest as they drew nearer to the palace's sprawling complex.  "That said, we do go out of our way to honor our alien friends.  Ajakis Memorial Starport is named after one of the kings of the Yapatha species.  Gave his life to ensure the end of an insurrectionist movement on his homeworld."

Teemas met the emperor's gaze. Something changed in her eyes, and her tone became slightly more serious.

"The insurrectionist movement, what was it about?"

"About seven-hundred and fifty years ago, roughly a hundred years after first contact with the Yapatha High Kingdom, a group among the Yapatha people began preaching that only those they deemed 'worthy', 'strong', and 'pure' should have the 'privilege' of interacting with the 'mighty beings from afar'."  The young monarch sighed and leaned forward in his seat.

"These... terrorists... began murdering anyone who didn't meet their ridiculous notions of superior genetics and purity.  My predecessor initially kept interference limited to providing medical aid and military advisement, but preferred to let the Yapatha government handle the situation themselves.  Later events, however, forced us to act."
