The Treecuu Way
#41

Teemas nodded.

"And this insurrection, does it still play an important role in the Yapatha and Drakari societies?"

Himiko’s Revenge
Port side Hangar

Fleet Commander Kensei yawned as his troops moved to prep the hangar for his extraterrestrial guest. Kensei donned full combat armor like the troops in the hangar, hiding his features and making him indistinguishable from the other soldiers. His AI companion Himiko was busy with the final preparations to comply with his orders.

Shortly before the Treecu vessel moved into the Hangar, Kensei felt the ship lurch, followed by an audible explosion as the metallic waste and Frigate Star Lambda were dispatched off the ship. The Frigate slowly drifted towards the Treecu vessel while camouflaged by the metallic waste.

"Due to the global scale of the conflict, my people sent one of our Legions to assist in the war effort.  The insurrectionists, or the Chosen as they called themselves, were defeated after a few Standard Years of combat, but not before they attempted the unthinkable..."

The Emperor sighed as he looked at Teemas.  "Because they were on the brink of defeat, their leaders had concluded that they as well were weak and impure, unworthy of joining the 'Mighty Beings from Afar'.  They attempted to set off lethal nerve toxins in major population centers in an effort to purge the cosmos of what they viewed as their race's impurity.  Most of them were found and disarmed, save for the one in the planetary capital.  King Ajakis, seeing no other option, took the bomb it was contained in aboard a shuttle and raced into orbit just as it detonated."

"His sacrifice saved countless millions.  To honor his actions and his dream of bringing Yapath to the stars, the Yapatha government requested that their world become an autonomous Protectorate."

Sector 13
Frigate Taam Yim

"Commander, Computer has engaged the active energy shield. Authorise autonomous fire?" A young lieutenant reported from his station.

The view screen on the bridge displayed the myriad of objects suddenly coming off the Himiko's Revenge.

"Do we have incoming, lieutenant?" the acting captain asked calmly.

"Negative... Computer just classified it as debris. Floating slowly."

"Understood. Maintain monitoring mode and the shields. Helm, double our distance to the Venterran ships. Science, initiate quantum scan."

The Commander watched the bridge officers carry out his orders. A quantum scan was different means of determening the composition of one or several objects, and the intention was to reveal as much as possible of the alien ships. A status bar appeared on the view screen. It indicated the scan would be finished in 1350 Candact rotations*. He started smiling as he got an idea.

"Com! Ask the Bragging Steak if they require assistance. We can offer towing."

* A Candact rotation (CR) was the rotational period of the pulsar named Candact in the centre of the Treecuu Star Empire. 1 CR ≈ 1.6 s.

Sector 13
Himiko's Revenge

There was a slight hiss as the landing gear of Nuum deployed, and the shuttle came to rest on the hangar floor. Seemingly from nowhere a door frame appeared on the hull and a door opened. There stood Tiro. Her long black robe fluttered as the air pressure was equalised. Her eyes carefully scanned the hangar.

"Truly a brave deed worthy recognition." Teemas added.

The story reminded her of the recent events on Yim III. She wondered how the individual behind the anti-matter explosion that destroyed a whole continent and took out the Treecuu marines was perceived among her people. According to the latest reports, she had died while setting the explosion off. At least that was the official Aryyt't report. It had apparently been an unsanctioned act of a radical and psychologically ill scientist.

Teemas continued.

"The Yapatha, did they eventually achieve interstellar flight on their own, or did they receive help?"

"A bit of both, if I recall my history lessons correctly," Julianus replied as he sat forward.

"Over the next century following Ajakis' sacrifice, we provided up to date medical technology and economic assistance to help get their homeworld's markets stabilized, but they created what I suppose could be called a crude wormhole drive.  Allowed them to expand to a small handful of systems, though it was slow.  Inefficient."

"What is their status today, are they still a protectorate?"

"Aye.  Though their government is heavily debating whether to apply for independence, continuing our relations as is, or full integration."

"In all honesty, Teemas, I am content with what ever it is the Yapatha choose.  If they ask us to withdraw, we shall withdraw.  If they vote to join the Imperium as a member world, so be it."
