The Great Aryyt't Play
#11

Remote Fleet Ship (RFS) Vaan Candacteec in orbit of Yim III/Aryyt't

A computer console in the Grand Observation Lounge had registered Governor Looth's presence and an artificial voice addressed him.

"Re-routed personal voice communication for Governor Looth from Emperor Julianus VII, do you accept?"

"I accept" Looth told the computer, which confirmed his command by beeping cheerfully.

"Emperor, it is an honour. As you may have noticed, an antimatter device was detonated on the surface. One of our frigates tracked the origin of the signal which triggered the explosion and incapacitated the facility from which is was sent to prevent more terrorist attacks. I am sorry that you arrived in the middle of this and that you had to witness this cowardly attack. Do not worry though, we are completely safe here in orbit."

Royal shuttlecraft approaching Yim III/Aryyt't

If the Emperor was skeptical, his tone didn't let it show as he replied to the Governor.

"I am glad that you have the situation under control.  No doubt we are quite secure up here, sir.  Your bombardment seemed... rather thorough.  I trust that the civilian population is safe?"

"Tell me, what is the overall status of the planet?"

"The antimatter explosion was directed mostly outwards, and was, like the devices that were detonated at the time of first contact, directed against us, the Treecuu and our requested presence. The Aryyt't dwell deep below the planet's surface, and our preliminary estimates show zero civilian casualties, but we have lost contact with a meteorological survey team from our peacekeeping forces.

In general, the last couple of days we have seen a dramatic and unexpected escalation of violence, despite great efforts by the Aryyt't government. It seems the religious extremists have access to sophisticated technology that must have been supplied from an third party. We have just found evidence that the antimatter devices must have been manufactured off-world.

Emperor, I hope we can further explain and analyse the situation together here on the RFS Vaan Candacteec. Then, when we know it is safe, we can make the final trip to the planet."

"I see... yet things seem under control as of now.  Regardless, I will accept your invitation.  We will arrive to your ship as soon as possible."  Julianus frowned slightly as he spoke.  Something about the Governor's rhetoric didn't sit right with him.  Something he would have to discuss with his council and the Senate when he returned home, no doubt.

"Do you have any hangar bays aboard your flagship available, Governor Looth?  If necessary, we can pull alongside and use a docking umbilical."

Some incompetent person had apparently failed to relay the docking protocols, and now their Emperor was asking for them, and he, Governor of the Bicaan Mandate and Supreme Commander of the Mandate Fleet had to take care of it like some lowly bridge officer.

He angrily pushed a few buttons which initiated a data transfer to the shuttle.

"You should be receiving the protocols now, Emperor. I apologise for any confusion. Hangar Bay 2 is ready to receive you."

Someone would pay for their ineptitude.

* * *

A large portion of the port side of the flagship seemed to implode as the hangar doors opened, revealing bright hall and ranks of troops standing at attention.

"Ah... thank you, Governor.  I look forward to meeting you."  With that, Julianus cut the transmission and leaned back in his seat as the shuttle's pilot maneuvered the craft into the Vaan Candacteec's hangar.  After a taking a brief moment to prepare himself and his retinue, the Emperor motioned for the ramp to lower.

The relatively young monarch stood at his full impressive height as he entered the hangar unafraid, the claws on his feet lightly clicking against the floor as he moved forward with powerful strides.  Flanking him on either side was a small squadron of his personal guard from the palace, their eyes trained carefully on the Treecuu soldiers as the marched lockstep near their liege.

"Hail, warriors of the Treecuu Star Empire," Julianus intoned as he walked, "On behalf of the Drakari and all the races allied with us and under our protection, I thank you for this auspicious invitation and your hospitality."

There was a brief moment of silence after the echo of the Emperor's words had faded out, then the troops shouldered their arms and replied in unison.

"Prosperity and friendship!"

All of the troops in the ranks belonged to the Remote Fleet and Bicaan Mandate Fleet, and they all wore a green uniform, apparently the same as Governor Looth, who just entered the hangar bay.

Had his guest been a representative of one of the subject species, Looth would have waited for him to walk his way down the ranks of soldiers, but now Looth walked with confident steps to meet the emperor. The soldiers turned their heads to face Looth or the emperor until they met halfway.

"Welcome, Emperor! I hope that your voyage here was a pleasant one, despite having to witness the unfortunate exchange of fire at your arrival."

"My voyage was uneventful, thankfully.  While I admit that the bombardment was not something I expected to see this day, I am glad that no innocents were harmed in the exchange, Governor."  The Emperor gave his best diplomatic smile to Looth, the tips of his pointed teeth barely visible.

"I must admit the efficiency at which you responded was quite impressive.  I'm sure that the Lord of Admirals wouldn't mind carrying out drills with you in the not too distant future."

The Emperor's guards smirked behind their helmets, relaxing slightly as the two conversed, but kept their guard up as the introductions continued.

"OH!  Speaking of ships, I hope our method of arrival didn't cause a stir among you or your subordinates.  I will admit the portal's opening was a bit... sudden."

"Not at all, Emperor. Though a magnificent display and an engineering feat, your arrival was expected."

Ambassador Teemas joined the Emperor and the Governor. Looth nodded in acknowledgement.

"I am sorry that our President could not come here to meet you, Emperor. He is on his way to the Ryccian Empire to meet the Emperor there. He sends his regards, and he hopes to have you as his guest sometime soon in the Capital."

"Now, shall we proceed to the Grand Observation Lounge and discuss the situation here?"

"I share your President's hope, Governor.  I would quite enjoy your hospitality, if Teemas' openness on Pax Dracon is any indication."

Julianus gently motioned towards the Emissary before nodding at Looth.  "Of course.  Lead the way.  That said, I do not mean any offense by choosing to stand once we get there.  Forgive me for assuming, Governor, but I do not think this ship was designed with an individual around my size in mind."  The crimson-scaled behemoth chuckled self-deprecatingly, hoping the attempt at humor would further ease the tension.
