The Sedunnic Armed Forces (Sedunnic: Rammstovd, "War Authority") is the government agency that forms the military of Sedunn. It has three service branches: the Sedunnic Army, the Sedunnic Navy, the Sedunnic Air Force, and several joint services.

Military service is mandatory in Sedunn for both men and women, but after several reforms in the 1980s, each year only a minority is conscripted for training after the mandatory entrance assessment tests. Serving abroad is always voluntary in peacetime.

The active force is about 66,710 military and civilian voluntary personnel. The reserve force is about 159,924 and has both conscripted and voluntary personnel. The voluntary personnel of the reserve force mainly serves in the local defence battalions.

Most of the equipment is manufactured domestically by state-owned companies. Military funding is by tradition high.

Doctrine
The purpose Sedunnic Armed Forces is to prevent a foreign occupation of Sedunn and secure its continuing existence as an independent nation, by defending the nation, its allies, and its interests in the world, and assert the territorial integrity of Sedunn and the rule of international law. Furthermore, it shall keep the cross-Pacific trade routes open, support the civil society in case of natural disasters, and support international peacekeeping efforts.

The Sedunnic Armed Forces pursues a doctrine of high mobility, modularity, and often expensive, sophisticated equipment. The goal is to gain and maintain local fire superiority everywhere in Sedunn by the means of combining arms, to achieve war deterrence. Especially the Navy is also used in access/area denial missions.

Sedunn is a founding member of the South Pacific Treaty Organisation and has issued a guarantee of independence to Transsuneria. Interoperability and expeditionary capabilities have increased in importance. However, after the 1965 Treaty with Karnetvor, Sedunn started shifting its defence planning towards home defence, reducing expeditionary capabilities greatly to a minimum by the early 2000s. Following Tasternine's declaration of independence from the then nationalist Karnetvor and King VImmru II's new foreign policy where military neutrality was abolished, work has begun to increase expeditionary capabilities.

Current international deployments

The Sedunnic Armed Forces has peacekeeping troops deployed in Transsuneria since the end of the Second Transsunerian Civil War. The number of troops has recently been reduced to a battalion-sized contingent. Following the declaration of guarantee of independence, work has begun to establish a base to support a permanent Sedunnic garrison. According to current planning, a motorised battalion, a detachment of two to four Hotvemm G84 fighters and a small naval logistics support unit shall be deployed by 2020 the earliest, or when the peacekeeping mission ends.

Following the Grovne Pact, Sedunn has deployed its Special CBRN Operations Units in Reizen to prevent or limit the use of chemical weapons by the RIM. By mid-February this year an estimated 25% of the RIM's stockpile had been destroyed.

The Sedunnic Navy conducts patrol missions on the cross-Pacific trade routes. To support this, and as part of the committent to the SPTO, Sedunn has small naval logistics support units in Karnetvor.

Recruitment

A physical aptitude test.
Military (or civilian) service is compulsory from the age of 18 for all men and women (women since 2017). When turning 17, all Sedunnic citizens take entrance assessment tests (that may be postponed up to the age of 20 under special circumstances). Based on the results, different service alternatives are offered, of which one has choose one. The training is at least 11 months. While many still are conscripted, the yearly number of conscripts has been greatly reduced since the 1980s, more due to modernisation requiring less personnel than an actual disarmament.

After having completed the training, the recruits are given a choice to continue serving in a professional career in one of the active units, or join the reserve (the so-called mobilisation forces). Personnel that belongs to the reserve are required to participate in recurring refresher training and exercises.

After having reached the upper military age, which varies depending on type of service, career personnel and reservists may volunteer to join the local defence forces.

In total, about 1.4% of the population is directly engaged in Sedunn's military defence (about 226,000 personnel), of which 56% serve voluntary units. About 12% are female.

Organisation

The highest ranking officer in the Sedunnic Armed Forces is the Supreme Commander, currently General Maks Fejellienn. The Supreme Commander is appointed by the Sedunnic Defence Ministry and leads the Armed Forces according to the policy set forth by the Government.

The Supreme Commander leads the Headquarters of the Armed forces, which consists of two staffs: the Operations Command, which plans, directs and controls the usage of the forces, and the Training Command which controls recruitment and training of the personnel in the forces.

There are three service branches in the Sedunnic Armed Forces: the Army, the Navy and the Air Force. Each service branch has their own operations and training commands. There are also five joint services: the Special Forces, Psychological Operations Command, Space Command, Digital Command and the Military Intelligence Service, which all answer directly to the Operations Command.

Army

The Army (Trammtasstled, "the Field Forces") is responsible for land operations and is the largest service branch of the Sedunnic Armed Forces, having about 185,000 personnel. The Army has 12 brigades of different types and 112 additional battalions. There are three different personnel categories in the Army: active, conscripted and volunteer, where the latter two belong to the reserve. The active force in the Army is about 34,000 personnel, also including training and civilian personnel. Personnel in the volunteer category exclusively serve in local defence battalions.

Fully mobilised, the Army has the following structure.

Structure of the Sedunnic Army since 2018 (click to enlarge).

Main unit types
Field brigades are the core units of the Army and have a combination of armoured and mechanised manoeuvre battalions. There are two variants: light/heavy. The heavy field brigade has twice as many tanks, double the amount of field artillery and more mechanised infantry, while the light field brigade is slightly more mobile. Main systems include VN 14, VN 86E, AGvN 14, MHRN 14.

City brigades are mechanised infantry brigades specialised in urban warfare. They also perform honour guard duties. The brigades use lighter armoured vehicles such as from the RN 90 family.

Coast brigades have battalions with anti-ship missiles and artillery to prevent hostile landings. Main systems are AGvN 14, VHRN95, and MHRN 14.

The airmobile brigade is the most recent addition to the Army to increase Sedunn's expeditionary capability. The airmobile brigade performs air assault and has light infantry battalions, paratrooper units and attack helicopters.

Mountain battalions fight in mountainous regions. Mechanisation and access to fire support is much lower than in the field brigades. The main purpose is to deny an opponent access and passage through passes and valleys and surface surveillance.

Local defence battalions are motorised and mechanised rapid response units that guard and protect specific areas and buildings, and assist/protect mobilisation of the rest of the army. They mainly inherit equipment from active and conscripted units.

Active units
The active units of the Army has exclusively professional personnel. In peacetime, the following units are active (or portions of).

Navy

The Navy (Sevvtasstled, "the Sea Forces") is composed of five components: the Surface Forces, the Submarine Forces, the Marine Corps, Auxiliary Forces and Naval Air Service. It includes in total about 15,000 active and 3,500 reserve personnel, 56 combatant ships of various size, additional auxiliary ships, 40 aircraft and 2,000 marines. The Navy is a blue-water navy with some degree of amphibious and replenishment capabilities beyond its own home region. There are no fixed operational formations of combatant ships, instead temporary naval battlegroups are formed for specific missions.

The Sedunnic Coast Guard is not part of the Armed Forces and is a component of the Sedunnic Police.

In Sedunnic, vessels are given the prefix "SSR", short for Sedunnō Sevvtasstleō Riks (Sedunn's Navy's Ship). In Austral, the prefix "SNS" ("Sedunnic Navy Ship") is used instead.

List of active Sedunnic Navy Ships
There are approximately 71 ships in commission including 5 destroyers, 7 frigates, 12 corvettes, 12 submarines, 3 amphibious transport docks, 9 patrol boats, 8 mine countermeasures vessels and 15 miscellaneous auxiliary vessels. The total displacement of the Sedunnic Navy is approximately 215,000 tonnes.

Naval bases
There are three major naval bases in use, all in Mainland Sedunn, and several smaller in the Mainland as well as in Vastraenn and Transsuneria.
  • Essela Base - Sometimes called the military capital of Sedunn, it is home to several Armed Forces commands, army, air force and naval units. Destroyers, submarines and much of the transport vessels are based there, as well as the Marine Corps and larger auxiliary vessels. It is located 15 km north-west of the capital of Sedunn, Grovne.
  • Ullenst Base - It maintains the Navy's frigates and some of the corvettes. Sedunn's largest shipyard is located in Ullenst.
  • Flered Base - It supports all operations in the Mediterranean sea. Currently the most important surface combatants stationed there are corvettes. Flered is the second largest port city in Sedunn after Grovne.

Joint services

There are five joint services in the Sedunnic Armed Forces: the Special Operations Troops, Psychological Operations Command, Space Command, Digital Command and the Military Intelligence Service, which all answer directly to the Operations Command. The joint services conduct non-conventional operations, including infiltration, cyber defence, psychological warfare and complex combat.

Special Operations Troops
The Special Operations Troops (Uttsylekserrleynled) use unconventional means to conduct special operations. The number of troops is secret, but it is as mentioned estimated to around 800. There are four different services within the Troops:
  • Uttsyd Rakraensi (URe) - Special Combat Service: Engages and destroys targets of great significance to the enemy, rescues people captured by the enemy or held hostage.
  • Uttsyd Lynyvensi (ULe) - Special Reconnaissance Service: Gathers intelligence on activities, certain individuals, or anything of strategic importance.
  • Uttsyd Hemmvesramme (UHre) - Special Electronic Warfare Service: EM compatibility and deception; electronic masking, probing, reconnaissance, and intelligence.
  • Uttsyd LTUS-Lekserrensi (UULu) - Special CBRN Operations Service: Its tasks range from CBRN-specialised intelligence gathering, combat in contaminated environments, disarmament of CBRN weapons and critical containment of C-, B-, and R-events.

Psychological Operations Command
The Psychological Operations Command (Likktalekserrseoverr) conduct psychological operations.

Space Command
Space Command (Onneseoverr) conducts surveillance and intelligence gathering using satellites. The command has two main bases, one is located somewhere in the Limmvasd Mountain Range, the other one is located outside Levenst, Vastraenn, from where the satellites are launched.

Digital Command
Digital Command (Siearasteoverr) manages cyber operations, both offensive and defensive.

Military Intelligence Service
By nature, very little is publicly known about the Rammet Hekktundevvt (RHd - Military Intelligence Service). Its personnel is known to work aboard the air force's signal intelligence aircraft.

Equipment and suppliers

Most of the military equipment used by the Sedunnic Armed Forces is manufactured in Sedunn, by companies that are entirely publicly owned (Law 1021-1912). An organisation called Materiel Requisition Agency in Austral, organised under the Training Command, is responsible for research, preliminary testing and procurement of military hardware. Selling military equipment to other nations is strictly regulated by law (Law 1022-1912) and is normally only reserved to closely allied nations. However, Sedunn has been known to support rebellions and foreign powers with weapons when it has served a very specific purpose.

Major manufacturers of military hardware include the following.
  • STT: surface combat ships.
  • Levē Kallnhē: surface combat ships (traditionally), submarines, and other marine vessels.
  • Botna: armoured and tracked vehicles.
  • SG: cannons and missiles.
  • SLU: electronic equipment, including radars.
  • Sedtrē: firearms.
  • ASA: aircraft.

Many other major Sedunnic companies are involved in delivering products not directly intended for combat to the Sedunnic Armed Forces, like the car manufacturers HF KJ, Limma KJ, aircraft manufacturer Levea and food manufacturer Inniennō Jul.

Notable equipment include the Suvvtrefy 03 D assault rifle, VEV 14 main battle tank and the ASA VOT 14 Hotvemm multirole fighter.

ASA VOT 14 Hotvemm
[Image: q9fIMvH.png]
Two Sedunnic ASA VOT 14 Hotvemms.
The ASA VOT 14 Hotvemm ("Lightning") is a single-engine, canard delta-wing, multirole fighter aircraft designed and built by ASA by request of the Sedunnic Materiel Requisition Agency. The Hotvemm is capable of shifting between air supremacy, interdiction, reconnaissance and attack roles during the same mission. The Hotvemm is also capable of aerial refuelling and is designed to allow landing on rudimentary runways and public roads as part of the force dispersal doctrine.

Though having some key stealth features that reduce the radar cross-section, the Hotvemm is not considered a full stealth aircraft. The design chosen is a compromise to reduce cost, but is also uncertain how effective stealth design will be against modern and future radar and missile systems.

There are three variants of the Hotvemm:
  • VOT 14 A: single-seat multirole fighter
  • VOT 14 B: two-seat conversion trainer, secondary role as a strike fighter
  • GVOT 14 D: two-seat strike fighter version of the G84 B with a more powerful engine and conformal fuel tanks

The VOT 14 A has also been exported to Sereva & Erinor.

Performance (VOT 14 A)
  • Maximum speed:
    • High altitude: Mach 2.0 (2,460+ km/h)
    • Sea level: Mach 1.13 (1,400+ km/h)
    • Without afterburner: Mach 1.25 (1,540+ km/h, 950+ mph) supercruise capable; Mach 1.1 with air-to-air weapons
  • Combat radius:
    • Air-to-ground: 1,500 km (internal + maximum external fuel)
    • Combat air patrol: 900 km (internal + maximum external fuel)
