Valkyrian news | Cultists empowered by government inaction
By Vanessa Mendoza, The Stockholm Post
Friday, 1 November 2019

Stockholm (The Stockholm Post) — Ever since Jake Marshall, an alleged cultist leader, was elected to Parliament as a member of The New Right, his influence and the party he is a member of have caused the government to shut down the Office of Cultist Movement Investigations (OCMI), which was the National Police office responsible for investigating alleged cultist groups in Valkyria. In the Silesian province of Valkyria, groups of people describing themselves as "Valrissi fundamentalists" have been a source of attention from the news media due to reports of kidnapping, torture, and murder. However, Marshall contends that the news media have "distorted and exaggerated" the people of the province who are "exercising their freedom of religion".

However, the situation described by the news media seems to paint a more accurate picture, especially in "The wildlands of Valkyria", an investigative news article that The Stockholm Post published in May 2019, in which the paper's reporters found members of alleged cultist groups possessing illegal firearms and accounts from residents in the Silesian province. Marshall, who had been campaigning for a seat in Parliament at the time, was the subject of a National Police investigation that had been closed as soon as he had been sworn into office. The closure of the investigation sparked small protests in Stockholm, accusing the government of "covering up" his alleged crimes. With the closure of the OCMI and the investigation into Marshall, residents in Silesia have warned The Stockholm Post that the situation has worsened.

One resident who has refused to be named due to fear of retaliation has told The Stockholm Post that cultist groups in the province are threatening non-Valrissi people with violence if they do not convert, "They claim that this land belongs to those who believe in the Valrissi gods and non-adherents are those who belong in Náströnd." For those who are unfamiliar with the Valrissi religion, Náströnd is the part of Hel where Níðhöggr chews on the dead. However, believers of the Valrissi Orthodoxy have also been threatened by the fundamentalists. Valrissi priest David Irisson said that he was confronted by fundamentalists who accused him of "giving aid to the non-believers". Irisson believes that Valkyrians should not be forced to convert to the Valrissi religion if they do not want to.

In a few days, the investigation into the disappearance of Police Sergeant Rebecca Hawkins and Junior Officer Craig Lance enter into its second year, who have been missing since 5 November 2018. The two police officers were dispatched to arrest a suspected member of a cultist group before they were reported missing by their colleagues. Friends and acquaintances of the two officers fear that they may be dead, but the National Police still have not concluded their investigation and consider them to be "missing persons". The National Chief of Police, Eric Weston, has said that the National Police has worked "vigorously" to find them, but have "reached a dead end".

In Stockholm, the United Religions Organisation (URO) has accused the government of "colluding" with cultist groups in the Silesian province. The current bloc in government, the New Conservative Coalition, has the backing of The New Right, a political party that the URO has often accused of "pandering and harbouring" cultists in Silesia. The New Right leader Nicole Chancellor, who serves as the Home Secretary and whose portfolio includes the National Police, has countered the claims of the URO by defending Valrissi fundamentalists, "These people are exercising their freedom of religion and I will not persecute the Valrissi for doing so." The Home Secretary went further to accuse the URO of being an "anti-Valrissi group". The URO's spokesperson, Daniel Fitz, who is an adherent of Messianism, said that the current Valkyrian government is "eroding" freedom of religion in the country.

Opinion | Tariffs show the failures of the Coalition government
By Toni Ashford
Friday, 3 January 2020

The New Conservative Coalition have showed the Valkyrian people that, to further their goals, they have no problem with sabotaging the economy and setting it up for recession. At the helm of the government, the Valkyrian people are de jure led by three figures, but most of the power seems to rest in the Home Secretary. Stella Kaufman and Bradley Murphy may be respectively serving as Chancellor and Foreign Secretary, but their jobs seem to be dictated by Nicole Chancellor, a nationalist who sees nothing wrong with the implementation of tariffs by foreign countries. When the Conservative Party and the Centrist Democratic Party were respectively led by Jonathan Victor and Victor Cutter, they adamantly opposed tariffs, but the new leaders seem to show indifference.

When ordinary Valkyrians go to the market to buy their food and other goods, they will find that they will have to pay more at checkout because of the tariffs. From perishable goods to appliances, imported goods that were cheaper to buy have now become more expensive, taking more money out of the pockets of the working class and worsening income inequality in Valkyria. However, this is something to be expected from the New Conservative Coalition, since they were once the United Conservative Party, whose policies historically favoured the wealthy. What else is there to expect from a political bloc that does not speak for the working class?
It is important to state that the tariffs have been set against Valkyria in the context of the Kalkara War. Only months into the new government, Kaufman called on Parliament to declare war on Hystaiga, accusing the neighbouring country of committing state-sponsored acts of terrorism against Valkyria. However, Socialists in Parliament have expressed their skepticism that Hystaiga was responsible for such attacks. This opinion has also been reflected by other nations who have called for a ceasefire in the Kalkara War and an independent investigation conducted by the World Forum. In spite of these protests, Kaufman has not relented in the effort to defeat Hystaiga in the war, choosing to go forward with the planned overthrowing of the government in Karelia.

When Margaret Harrison served as Chancellor of Valkyria, she worked hard to build a friendly relationship with other countries and negotiated what she described as "free and fair" trade agreements that not only lowered tariffs but addressed environmental and workplace issues. With the support of the Alliance of Social Democrats and members of the Centrist Democratic Party, Harrison made sure that the trade agreements would not negatively harm the environment by ensuring that parties properly addressed climate change and also worked to guarantee that workers of all parties to the agreements would be given the same rights, protections, and regulations.

The current government led by the Coalition has no interest in negotiating free trade agreements as long as The New Right is part of the government. In December, Trade Secretary Kari Markussen met with Peonic government officials to discuss the relationship between Huawan and Valkyria, but appeared to only be there just to sabotage the trade talks with no agreement in place. During the general election campaign, The New Right was openly hostile toward the notion of negotiating free trade agreements and this sentiment has been reflected in the Coalition government. As far as one could tell, Valkyria will not be part of any such negotiations for years to come because of The New Right and the Kalkara War.

Valkyrian politics | Steve Bennett elected Socialist leader
By Chelsea Frost, The Stockholm Post
Saturday, 18 January 2020

"We shall firmly stand in opposition to this unjust and unlawful war."

Stockholm (The Stockholm Post) — On Saturday, the membership of the Valkyrian Socialist Party voted to elect Steve Bennett as the leader of the party, succeeding Amalia Rollins, who has served as party leader since June 2017, when the party first gained representation in Parliament. In his victory speech, Bennett promised to "firmly stand in opposition to [the] unjust and unlawful war" in Hystaiga. In spite of his unpopularity amongst the general population and accusations of being a "single-issue candidate", Bennett won the support of 87% of Socialist Party members in an election between four candidates.

Before his election as the Leader of the Socialist Party, Bennett represented Stockholm's 2nd constituency in the National Assembly and served as deputy leader from June 2017 under Rollins' leadership. In his apolitical duties, Bennett is a reserve captain in the Valkyrian Naval Service, formerly serving in Neptune Group, a naval special operations unit. His rank and service during the Great War of 2014 has earned him the nickname "Captain Valkyria" by some of his peers, but conservative political opponents admonish the nickname as a symbol of a "cult-like following".

In June 2019, Bennett was viewed as the eighth-most admired politician in Valkyria, but his opposition to the Kalkara War has led to him being viewed as the most unpopular Member of Parliament. In spite of his opposition to the conflict, military records and social media posts indicate that his daughter was conscripted in the war effort. The newly elected Socialist leader has said, "The Valkyrian people will learn that their government is lying to them and it will be a rude awakening for the [New Conservative] Coalition." Bennett has repeatedly stated that the Socialist Party will "overcome the conservative smear campaign" and help the Alliance of Social Democrats return to majority.

While Rollins stepped down as the Leader of the Socialist Party, she will remain in her seat as a Member of Parliament.
