[Discussion & voting] Composition of Pacifica's Solar System
#41

Personally I'm not a fan of the idea of naming stuff after Roman stuff, since they already were incredibly influential IRL Tounge

I can see two different ways of approaching this:

1: What theme would the Austral culture (or the dominating Austral culture) have chosen for the planets in antiquity? (Preferably nothing Roman Happywide ) This would probably not be influenced by other IC cultures in the South Pacific.

2: An international commission for harmonisation of nomenclature, the CPSC, or something like that, decides on the official names. We would submit suggestions like for the bodies of water and vote (OOCly of course). A chance for our "indigenous" cultures.

If there were any particularly influential Austral empires of antiquity, using their religious notions would be useful.

As Eggraria was relatively untouched as primarily ancient nomadic tribes of antiquity, I can’t really add much here. I do like the idea of an international nomenclature council.

I believe the easiest way to proceed is to do it like with the bodies of water. People nominate names, then we vote. The result can be an international nomenclature council (or whatever it would be called) decision, ICly.

Here's a basic draft for an overview of the system according to option 1. The planets are at scale, but the distances aren't. Moons except for Maxima haven't been added.

I based the planet sizes on finding RL equivalents:

0: The Sun: same type as our real-life sun.

1: Hot Gas Giant: ~14.5 x Pacifica mass ~= URANUS

2: Small Planet 1: ~2 x real-life Mercury mass => 1.26 X MERC. RADIUS

3: dwarf planet ~= PLUTO

4: Small Planet 2: ~3 x real-life Mercury mass => 1.43 X MERC. RADIUS

5: Pacifica (Planet 1): 1 x real-life Earth mass

6: Rocky Planet 2: ~1 x real-life Mars mass ~= MARS

7: Gas Giant 1: ~330 x real-life Earth mass + smaller moons ~= JUPITER

8: Gas Giant 2: ~100 x real-life Earth mass + rings ~= SATURN

9: Asteroid Belt 2

10: Rocky Planet 3: ~10 x real-life Earth mass + rings => 2.15 X EARTH RADIUS

11: Ice Giant 1: ~18 x real-life Earth mass ~= NEPTUNE

12: Zone with asteroid belts and dwarf planets

Any thoughts? Shall we proceed?

Alright then! Let's nominate. See this post for the stuff to name. Feel free to nominate up to three names for as many of the numbered items in mentioned post you like. The nomination period will be for seven days, and a voting period shall follow. Please provide explanations to the names.

Frost Formally requests the following names:

6: Rocky Planet 2: ~1 x real-life Mars mass ~= Tyr
11: Ice Giant 1: ~18 x real-life Earth mass ~= XION
12: Zone with asteroid belts and dwarf planets = Hachiman's Keep
We especially push for XION for the ICE giant.

We would like to nominate:
8: Pörea
Named after Astronomist Lorem Pörea, who discovered it in 1824. We would also like for it to have 3 moons, all named after his children (the moons can be however you wish): Yuroe (largest), Polea (Possibly pink if you want) and Ïop (smallest).

6: Loedo
Discovered by another Eareamian Astronomist, Pëmad Leom Drocél, who saw it's red color in 1531 and decided to name it after a word simmilar to red in Eareamian (Red in Eareamian is Rode) and combine it with his son's name, Lödoc.

Alright, here are the Sedunnic names, which I nominate. The theme for the names is the fireplace and forging. Everyone used to have one at home, and much of life revolved around it, and this inspired the ancient Sedunners. Also, the bronze and iron age happened early in Sedunn

0: The Sun (known in antiquity)
Han (meaning “great fire”, from an old stem for fire and an ancient augmentative form)

1: Hot Gas Giant 1 (known in antiquity)
Egibsi (meaning “little [black]smith”, from being the closest to the hearth and orbiting fast, (imagining it as a hammer))

2: Small Planet 1 (known in antiquity)
Lomsi (meaning “little ember”, due to that the planet is small and has a fast orbit)

3: Dwarf Planet
Jamsi (meaning "little gazer" referring to someone gazing at the fire)

4: Small Planet 2 (known in antiquity)
Uresi (meaning “little pot”, recognising the importance of fire for preparing food)

5: Pacifica
(Atea (meaning “ground”)
The name Pacifica has already been decided)

6: Rocky Planet 2 (known in antiquity)
Dovrafsi (meaning “little iron ore”)

7: Gas Giant 1 (known in antiquity)
Visi (meaning “little goldy”)

8: Gas Giant 2 (known in antiquity)
Broibsi (meaning “fire iron/fireplace poker”, due to being the outermost known planet at the time of discovery, seen as what keeps everything under control)

9: Asteroid Belt 2
Botnienn Belt

10: Rocky Planet 3 (discovered in the 17th, 18th or 19th century)
Tillsi (meaning “little tong”, like the accessory for a fireplace)

11: Ice Giant 1 (discovered in the 17th, 18th or 19th century)
Ossi (meaning “little slivery” or “silvery one”, referring its (possible) colour)

12: Zone with asteroid belts and dwarf planets
Outer Belt
