Today Poland and also Egypt qualified for the FIFA World Championship 2018 in Russia.
With that following teams will participate:

Belgium, Brazil, Costa Rica, Egypt, England, Germany, Iran, Japan, Mexico, Nigeria, Poland, Russia, Saudi-Arabia, South Korea and Spain.

Following teams are still able to qualify:

Argentina, Australia, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Chile, Colombia, Côte d'Ivoire, Croatia, Denmark, D.R. Congo, France, Greece, Honduras, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Morocco, Netherlands, New Zealand, Northern Ireland, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Portugal, Senegal, Serbia, Slovakia, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, Syria, Tunisia, Ukraine, Uruguay, USA and Wales.

Today Germany set a new record. They won their group (Group C) with 30 points (10 victories out of 10 games) and had a goal difference of +39 (43:4). Second of the group Germany was in got Norther Ireland with 19 points and a goal difference of +11 (17:6). Czechia, Norway, Azerbaijan and San Marino failed.

Also a funny thing happened in group A, where Sweden beat Luxemburg with 8-0. The funny thing is that in the press conference before the game the coach of Luxemburg got asked "what will happen if Sweden wins 8-0" on which he answered that "Sweden will never win 8-0. That's a stupid question".

I am posting mainly to express my absolute disgust with US football.  After somehow losing to that international powerhouse of world football - Trinidad and Tobago - and concurrent wins by Honduras and Panama, US chances of WC qualification are nil.

An utter disgrace.

Now...seeing as Scotland also got eliminated, I need to pick a team to follow for the WC.  Any suggestions?  (Really hoping NI qualifies but I'm doubtful...)

Peru has finished the CONMEBOL qualification in 5th place and advanced to the playoff with New Zealand. If they win against NZ, it'll be their first World Cup appearance since 1982.

I'm really impressed by the little country of Iceland. Made it to the biggest stage, despite only having a population of about 300,000 people.

Also, best of luck to Peru. My country finished dead last, so I'll send good vibes to my fellow underdogs.

Iceland is awesome. Made it in their first UEFA European Football Championship instantly into the quarter finals where they lost against France. If you don't know, who you want to support, support Iceland. They're always good for surprises and I'm really optimistic they will at least advance from the group stage even at the WC (except they get into a shitty group out of....dunno.....Spain, Argentina and Côte d'Ivoire or so).

EDIT: And they are so cute and funny somehow. Listen to this Icelandic commentator when Iceland made it's 2-1 goal against England and so made sure to get into the next round of the cup:

Someone tried to interpret the Icelandic directly into Swedish words. Basically, that's what the poster thought would be the words had it been in Swedish instead of Icelandic. If that makes sense.

In American baseball, the Chicago Cubs, the defending World Series champions, have defeated the Washington Nationals in a close Game 5 in the National League Division Series (best-of-five). Now, the Cubs will have a rematch against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Championship Series (best-of-seven). In last year's NLCS, the Cubs defeated the Dodgers in Game 6.

Just watched the most thrilling game of football/soccer in years, and Sweden qualified for the world cup, competing with Italy Smile

Like Qwert already said, Sweden qualified for the World Cup, while Italy won't participate for the first time since 1958.
Gigi Buffon declared his retirement from the Squaddra Azzuri.

Following teams are qualified for the next year's FIFA World Cup in Russia (Green = Also participated in 2014; Blue = Participates for the first time in a World Cup):

Draw Bowl 1

Russia (Host)
Germany (Current World Champion)
Brazil
Portugal (Current European Champion)
Argentina
Belgium
Poland
France

Draw Bowl 2

Spain
Peru
Switzerland
England
Colombia
Mexico
Uruguay
Croatia

Draw Bowl 3

Denmark
Costa Rica
Sweden
Iceland
Tunisia
Egypt
Senegal
Iran

Draw Bowl 4

Serbia
Nigeria
Australia (Current Asian Champion)
Japan
Morocco
Panama
South Korea
Saudi-Arabia

Which team is part of which draw bowl depends on their FIFA Ranking. The groups get drawn on 1st December 2017 in Moscow. The group won't contain two or more teams of one continental confederation (exception: the UEFA may compete with two teams in one group due to the massive number of UEFA members participating in the World Cup).

Following teams, which have qualified in 2014 and/or got champions of their continental championship didn't qualify for 2018:

Algeria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cameroon, Chile, Côte d'Ivoire, Ecuador, Ghana, Greece, Honduras, Italy, Netherlands, USA.
