Citizenship Removal Updates
#11

Citizenship, yes, I understand ya don't want people stickin' 'round just to vote in elections, but deetin' their whole account? I don't see the logic behind that.

It doesn't take days to take "a real good look" at the forums. It's not as if there are areas of the forum you can only see after registering, so deleting an account that's never been active doesn't limit anybody's access to the forums.

It doesnt matter that they arent active. Are we going to start deleting accounts of those inactive, former citizens who havent visited the forums in a few weeks? in effect, thats what you're doing. Deleting accounts for someone who hasnt posted. Like I said before. I may not have posted in the first 2-3 weeks on the forums. A simple PM could help bring those people active. Certainly, deleting their account isnt going to do that...

Hell, I didn't post in TNP for over a year after I registered there, and now I post there a couple dozen times a day. If I returned to find my account had been deleted, that probably wouldn't be the case. Some people might take offense to their account bein' deleted without notification. I know I would.

I'm not sure how the pruning works exactly (ie for the feasibility of posting a list as GE asked), but I don't quite get the point of posting a list of registered users who have never posted on the forums. It seems like a waste of space considering no one would know who they are anyhow.

This would work out a bit better. As to the "real good look" around, honestly some people are/might be intimidated by the boards. I know that some new users might not grasp right away the fact that there are more to the boards than what they see on the front portal. I remember back when I first started using an off site forum that I did not realize the whole world I was missing because I did not understand how they worked.

Heck in all honesty I didn't even now for the first three to six months how NS truly worked. I think honestly it might be something to take to a vote? Figure out a time limit that you might want to set go from there.

Also keep in mind that sometimes things happen IRL that will have some people leaving the boards unexpectedly without the ability to inform everyone here that they are not going to be around. Yes I speak of personal experience from this stand point.

Did ya'll delete M's account on these boards?

We can go ahead and stop with the hyperbole, Rebeltopia. Deleting citizen accounts is not "in effect" what we're doing here. I'm tired of people making mountains out of molehills in this region. We are deleting accounts that are never used. I don't believe at all that people need weeks and months to "feel out" the forums. You don't gain any special access to anywhere by registering, so if people want to observe, they can do so without accounts.

We are not submitting this to a vote, either. This is a forum administration issue. We are talking about accounts that are literally never used. We are not deleting accounts of people who go away for a few months for personal reasons. We are not touching citizens. Honestly, get a grip you guys. This is a basic forum standard.

I said nothing about citizen accounts. Once a citizen doesnt post twice in 30 days, they arent a citizen any more. So, in 2 months, when they still havent posted, you decide to delete their "inactive account". I dont see a difference between that and removing any other inactive registered account. And why are you doing it? Is it taking up that much server space that we need to delete registered members accounts? Are we limited to how many registered member accounts we have on this forum?

We are deleting accounts that register, but don't post within 7 days. That is not the same as deleting accounts that go inactive, but have posted. In fact, the Moderation Policy we submitted to the Assembly explicitly says we will not delete the accounts of people who decide to leave the forums.

We are doing this because it is standard forum operation procedure. It's not because a single entry in a database takes up a lot of space. It's because there is no need to keep accounts that aren't used. User pruning is not a new concept for online forums.

Honestly guys, I think we're having two different discussion here.

The citizenship list GR posted were citizens who are no meeting citizenship requirements and, as such, we returned to junior members.

The pruning solely refers to members who have registered but not activated their account and/or have not posted at all. It's not "inactive" accounts, its "never were active" accounts.

I must agree with GR that someone who hasn't posted anything in several months is highly unlikely to show up and start posting. And, if that person did suddenly to decide to become active, I don't think asking them to re-register is that big of a deal.

I'm fine with a longer window before pruning -- or maybe going with a "last active" date (if possible) -- but lets not get that bent out of shape over this.

Finally -- LR, who is M? If it's the person I think you're referring to, they never had a login on these forums because we had no way of transferring everyone from the previous incarnation. As such, everyone's accounts are new.

Not to repost, but just to be clear, I would never allow active members -- citizens or noncitizens -- to have their accounts deleted. So the slippery slope argument we've been going down isn't going to happen.

Tsu- Yes I think you are right on several counts. I will do my normal and address the last one first. Yes M is the one you are thinking of and thank you for clearing that up, I honestly did not know about that transfer thing or the login detail. Thank you to the Admin team for the looking out.

As to the 2 different trains of thought colliding in this thread, yep yep yep. Please take a bit of time to slow down and re read the thread peeps, please.

I honestly am not saying to not prune those that are inactive, I do however request that a bit longer timeframe be put in place. I also have a bit of an issue that I will be addressing shortly in a different post.

Please forgive the "double posting" but it is hard to quote people when I am on my Kindle.

EDIT: Nevermind the issue I saw at first is not an issue at all. I will not something out of context for the sole purpose of making it an issue it is not intended to be.
