Citizenship Removal Updates
#21

At no point durin' this discussion was I confused. I clearly see what you're proposin' to do, and I see no good reason for it.

Well, in the above, one idea has nothing to do with the other. Those who have ever obtained citizenship will not have their accounts deleted.

But those that don't will. I still don't see the logic behind that.

There is no logic behind it, GE.
Sandaoguo has already said "We are doing this because it is standard forum operation procedure", as if we've ever followed every single rule the internet has ever made...

Unless someone feels like providing a more persuasive argument than it being "standard practice", I cannot possibly see how this is necessary, never mind a good idea. There isn't a limit to how many registered users we can have, so there is absolutely no need to do this. What is more, people may have any number of reasons for registering but not posting which the admins are not aware of.

I absolutely do not believe that it is appropriate for any user account to be deleted, never mind for such spurious reasons.

I'm sorry that I'm literally the worst person on earth for practicing basic forum maintenance. From now on, I will personally go to every citizen and get their explicit approval to delete unused and inactivated accounts. Then I will seek the review of the judicial system. After that, I'll a sacrifice a lamb to ensure the internet gods approve of the deletion.

"Basic forum maintenance" =/= deleting user accounts unnecessarily.

Sandaoguo. if I am correct in my findings, you can tell the last time a person has been on the forum correct? Simply by clicking on their name? (I'm sure as an admin you have a much more techy way of doing it :hehe!: ) I think that inactive/non-registered accounts have no reason to be. If you can take the time to sign up for the forums you should have the time to "get a look around" not long after. And Rebel, if i remember correctly, I'm pretty sure you found the spam threads pretty quick...

Who doesn't? Tounge Anyway, what if they have an account on this forum for the express purpose of exchangin' PMs with someone? Should they be able to do that? Yes, why not? Should their account be deleted 'cause of that? No, why should they? That's the question that seems to be left unanswered. Why?

User pruning is a basic feature of all forum software. It is indeed basic forum maintenance to prune unused accounts. Most forums prune used but inactive accounts as well. It's done to de-clutter the user rolls, remove dormant spam accounts, and ensure that the user statistics are accurate. This isn't the first forum I've ever maintained. I do know what routine maintenance is.

MyBB has two fields to show how active a user is. The first is obviously the last time the user posted. The second as a "last active" field, which records the time when the user was last logged in and viewing the forums. The user pruning system is currently set up to delete accounts of users who haven't activated their account or have a post count of 0 after they've been registered for 7 days.

There are better ways of communicating with somebody than by registering on a forum just to use our PM system. NationStates telegrams, for one.

I've already given a reason why this is being done. It's not my problem that a few of you don't accept the reason. You guys want me to show that unused accounts have an extremely adverse impact on the forums.

They don't. This isn't being done because unused accounts are taxing on the forum. This is being done because it's standard operating procedure. That's your reason.
