Natural logarithms.
To be more specific, I used the equation n=ae^(kt) where n is the current amount, a is the initial value, e is 2.718, k is a constant specific to the situation at hand, and t is time.

What data did you use?

My own: all new nations start with a population of 5 million, and yesterday I took my population, plugged it into the equation, and got my results.

Based on Ballotonia's observations (here): If the growth rate is 5-7 millions per day then, assuming even chance and that the random growth starts after day 21 (at 62 millions), the total population (in millions) should be found in between n=62+5(t-21) and n=62+7(t-21).

Calculating the population after 426 days (as in my case) using k=5,6,7 and taking the mean yields a population of 2492 millions and my actual is 2507
Since the chance of obtaining a either 5, 6 or 7 million increase should be equal it is sufficient to use n=62+6(t-21).
When testing this for some nations it seems that the error is somewhere between 0.1 and 0.6 %. Smile
