Updated forum structure and guides?
#21

This looks very sensible to me and the generic names put to make it easier for newcomers to understand.

To be honest, the current theme, as well as being inscrutable to newbies, is kinda infantilsing.

Should we go ahead and implement it?

I'm not opposed, though maybe consider giving Facts subforums for the future?
I don't think moving old threads is necessary but for future threads, it could help reduce clutter a bit.
There's so many different topics there, it would help if future/important threads were sorted.
A subforum for surveys and such (maybe also the Conlang relay) maybe?

I have written a first draft for an updated newcomer guide. It's an edit of Kringle's original guide with some additions of my own. The document is open for everyone to edit, so please feel free to add your own suggestions and correct any mistakes.

The text, when finished, will be copied and posted here on the forums, therefore the layout, including font, size, bullets etc isn't important right now.

I'm thinking about writing a guide for developing news articles. Thoughts?

The proposed changes include new subforum names, slight rearranging of national facts, and new subforums in Knowhere. Threads to be pinned are indicated with italic text. The welcoming guide should be updated.

Treasure Island
  • Handbook (Rules, guides and OOC discussion)
  • Main Canon (Main canon RP, move currently pinned Rules of Bantam Harbour to Handbook)
    • Diplomacy (Diplomatic RP)
      • Embassies (Embassies)
      • World Forum (WF RP)
    • Media (News, media, Flash News (and Stream?))
    • Facts (Facts including national maps and language threads from Tortuga)
    • World Maps (Regional map, the expanded map, and related facts like Farengeto’s calculations, political geography maps and a possible future composition of the solar system. No national maps here.)
  • Extra-Canon (all non-main canon RP)
    • Sci-Fi (Sci-fi RP, Sector Map A1-0)
    • (Fantasy (possible future addition for Fantasy RP, possible map))
    • (Marketplace (Possible future place for RP related to the new money software "NewPoints", or maybe it should be placed in Lampshade Bar and Grill))

Current structure for comparison:

Treasure Island
  • Tortuga (Rules, guides and OOC discussion)
  • Bantam Harbour (Main canon RP)
    • Shipwreck Cove (Diplomatic RP)
      • Isla Cruces (Embassies)
      • World Forum (WF RP)
    • Message in a Bottle (News and media)
    • The Plank (Facts except maps)
    • Charts Repository (Regional map, expanded map and national maps and related facts)
  • Knowhere (all non-canon RP)

These changes have been enacted as requested, with the exception of 'Marketplace', since the economy system has not been properly implemented yet.

Please let me know if any assistance is required with moving threads or any administrative tasks related to this change.

Now that I see it in action, I think that "Sci-Fi" and "Fantasy" should be subforums of Treasure Island and considered a separate canon. "Sci-Fi" should be called "Section Map A1-0" based on the name of the system. The canon of Fantasy still has yet to develop, so I think the name should remain that way until such time that we have a name for it. With respect to "Main Canon", I think that the subforum should be called "Pacifica" based on the name of the world. Most of these ideas were borrowed from TNP, who have four different canons.

I’d rather keep the names generic. It’s entirely possible that names or circumstances may change, and subforum names shouldn’t be so specific. Might I propose less specific names, like MT Canon, FT Canon, or something along those lines?
