Conlang Word(s) of the Day |
So, here I am, resurrecting an old idea from The Grim Reaper's ill-fated NS RP server.
The idea is for someone to share a word or theme for the day and then everyone shares what that is in their conlang, including any interesting etymological information or behind-the-scenes interest, expanding their language's vocabulary along the way! Today: Seasons In Syaqin aren (Erinoran), season is Lamo, a masculine version of Lamin, 'moon'. There are only two seasons recognised in the majority of Erinor, being the wet season, Qassulamo and the dry (lit. 'hot') season, Varunulamo. In the mountainous regions three "seasons" are recognised. As well as Varunulamo, there is Qenarin (lit. 'diamond beauty'), 'frost' which is used across Erinor to translate winter, most famously in the name of the Erinor's first King, Syarkho Qenarid (usually translated 'the Dragon of Winter'). Between Qenarin and Varunulamo is Qenuqassin, 'thaw' or 'spring' (lit. 'diamond water'). EDIT: Behind-the-scenes - Qenarin existed as a word before I'd started trying to make-up etymologies and make sense of Syaqin aren in the context of NS Erinor, so an Etymology has to be reverse-engineered, producing Qena, 'diamond' in the process. The 'ar' root airway existed in Ara, 'beauty', so it was really matter of finding some meaning for the morpheme preceding it that could combine with beauty to mean something wintry... The ancient Nakarin languages were developed in river basins not far from the equator. Their concept of seasons relied on cycles of river flooding rather than cycles of temperature.
siyeral nâ, /si'jeral 'nɑ/, (lit. it is wet for some time), flood season âmel nâ, /'ɑmel 'nɑ/, (lit. it grows for some time), growth season adeshel nâ, /ad'eʃel 'nɑ/, (lit. it is full for some time), harvest season nâ was a particle marking continuous time-neutral action. It was used to reference seasons in the abstract or as part of a cycle, but more specific particles were used to refer to specific seasons (for example 'âmel e', 'the current growth season', or 'adeshel nin', 'the coming harvest').
Sedunnic evolved in a region with more or less four distinct seasons, depending on where you live. The seasons are the same as in English: summer, autumn, winter and spring.
The Sedunnic word for season is hanatts ['hɑːn̪.ɑt̪s], lit. "sun walk", relating to how the sun is perceived to be changing its path across the sky during the year. Summer is called plavn ['pl̪ɑːvn̪]. Its direct meaning has been lost, but is believed to contain the old root pla which can be found in more modern words such as errplav (program/agenda) and plann (surrounded, encircled, closed, enclosed). The meaning of plavn could therefore relate to the completion/end of a full year and the return of the sun. Autumn is called meppluss ['mep.l̪ɵ̞s], which means "harvest time". Winter is called kodluss ['kʰuːd̪.l̪ɵ̞s], which means "low time", relating to the decline of the sun's path across the sky. Spring is called modara ['muːːd̪.ɑːrɑ], which means "floweriness", which of course relates to the blooming that occurs when there is more and more sunlight.
I suggest the theme of domesticated animals!
Several animals are known to have been domesticated in ancient Nakarin. As a general group, they are referred to as '(kaya) tabet'. Smaller domestic animals that were seen as more intelligent were referred to more specifically as '(kaya) tâsh tabet'. kaya tabet ninnut, Loxodonta nacaris, the Nakarin elephant deshet, Oryx gazella familiaris, the nomad oryx kaya tâsh tabet illut, Lycaon picta familiaris, the painted wolf murayat, Felis harenis, the desert wildcat gâzet, Ovis orientalis, the urial or goat gâzemet, Ovis orientalis laniger, the woolly urial or sheep kuyat, Anas superciliosa, the grey duck kuyat kedel, Aix galericulata, the painted duck âshashat, Streptopelia roseogrisea, the collared dove
Erinor has a few of the usual domesticated animals:
Khendo: dog Fuorwa: cat Lossyatyo: horse Hrumera: cow (from the same root as Hrumin, 'milk) Icora: rabbit The most interesting animal to be domesticated in Erinor however remains the Terror Bird (Vaqendajino), which is extinct elsewhere. These animals have been ridden and used as beasts of burden for almost all of Erinor's recorded history, having only become partially sidelined with the introduction of horses to the Erinoran basin in the twelfth century. Some common domesticated animals in Sedunnic:
vokoss: dog fim: cat pol: horse igar: cow majj: rabbit iyt: hen ulm: duck jaff: goat And some honourable mentions: minna: common blackbird, Sedunn's national animal admired for its song. There have been attempts to domesticate it, but it's now illegal tivus: a smaller species of lion found in the forests of the Annhotem province uefflen: a species of seal that return to the beaches of the Sedunnic rivers to give birth and nurse their cubs There's actually an older post about these animals here.
Today's theme: Weather.
