Gianluca nodded. He knew, this question would come up at some time and was afraid to answer it, as it could be an obstacle in trade and treaty talks later on.
"Well, you know, Atlantis and GI-Land are connected by a long history. Eventually Atlantis decided to vanish from the world stage, while, especially after I got into power, we tried to build up our country and make it ready for this international level. As Atlantis came back in 2009, it perhaps thought, lead by a weak king, that it could blackmail us to get more advantages. As my consultants noticed this traitorous conduct of the Atlantic government, I decided to ask kindly, if they would stop or otherwise, it would be our duty to do something against it. They thought, it would be their right to command us, like they would be the rulers of the world, only because they have a long history and a great culture, so we sent them an ultimatum with some rules, how to behave with each other, that they haven't accepted. Instead they put GI-Landian atlantics into prison." He let Vimmru think about what he said for a little moment, before he continued. "And then one would say, we 'brought freedom to Atlantis'. Even without provoking a civil war or anything like that. Two weeks after they denied to accept the ultimatum, I visited the former king of Atlantis and had lunch with him, talked with him about the future of Atlantis and we decided on some kind of 'planned coup'. He resigned from his position and gave us the power to decide, what happens with Atlantis next. At first, we freed those innocent GI-Landian prisoners, then we annexed Atlantis and Greater GI-Land as the new states of GI-Land. There were protests of course, but we just let the protests be protests, while GI-landianizing Atlantis. German as official language instead of Atlantic, Atlantis as new capital instead of Gianlucastadt, myself coronated to be the next king of Atlantis. 6 weeks after the 'coup', if you want to put it like that, Atlantis and Greater GI-Land were completely GI-landianized, resistance got smaller, since many people saw, that it wouldn't be as bad as they would have expected it. No one was killed, no opinion against us was prohibited or persecuted, so why being afraid of us?" Gianluca giggled suddenly. "And the best part is, it was constitutional from Atlantis' point of view, since they were a monarchy. No democracy at all. What the king says, is the law of Atlantis and if the king announces, Atlantis is now part of GI-Land or under GI-Landian control, it is just under GI-Landian control. From our point of view, it was constitutional too, since we haven't fought in a war of aggression to get control over Atlantis. The only thing it wasn't admittedly: It wasn't democratic as in the sense, that we asked the people in a referendum, if they are okay with it, but like I said, they suddenly got all the basic rights a normal GI-Landian person got, so they may express their opinion about us as they want or organise themselves in a party like AVP and fight against the 'GI-landian establishment', including my person, that's all fine with me. Other leaders would have suppressed them and those have it easier to win elections etc., but I'm not like that. Am I weak because of that fact? Maybe, but I'm also a human. There's a reason, why we're having the system of a dictatorial democracy and not a dictatorship. The Leader isn't God, he is human and also just part of the people."

Vimmru responded, maintaining a neutral tone.
"How can the continuing existence of the Atlantic language be guaranteed with full GI-landianisation? What if a majority of the Atlantic people would rather seek full independence?"
"Well, we live in kind of a democracy and we decided together, that Atlantic is the second official language of GI-Land. We've got an own ministry for Atlantics, so they aren't under-represented in the government. The Atlantic people could seek for independence, if they would want to. They just need to get to a referendum and have majorities in every important house of legislation, since an independent Atlantis would be some kind of an amendment on the constitution. But nowadays it's unlikely, the economy or the military or anything like that could survive on the long run without GI-Land. Furthermore the former King of Atlantis gave us the power to reign over Atlantis and as in atlantic political tradition, the word of the king stands above the opinion of the people, so I guess, they'll keep their mouth shut by themselves. I for my part won't put a referendum up to vote, as I know, that this transition of power was constitutional and so is not a thing a referendum worth, that could cut off my power or perhaps lead to a civil war."

"I see. I believe that answers all my questions about Atlantis." Vimmru changed his grip of the handset.
"We may have different opinions about consulting the people of Atlantis, but I don't see it becoming an obstacle to expanded trade. I therefore propose the following. Both nations establish trade offices to promote trading and work for transparent rules and procedures. Implementing the so-called ES standards, as you mentioned earlier, would of course be favourable to the work of these trade office establishments."
Gianluca had to admit in his mind, that the way how history over the last years wasn't satisfying for him too, but the topic is finished, so he hadn't brought it up again.
"Trade offices....alright, I guess, my Ministers for Economy and Finance could set up a plan, how to do that best. Of course I'm totally for transparent rules and procedures too. May I ask, what the ES standards said exactly. I don't remember all of them again."

"The goal is to assure quality and compatibility of mainly consumer goods and related infrastructure and logistics, through standards on product testing and safety requirements, labelling, and conformity checks. Basically, as the customer, you should know what you are getting and how to use it properly."
"Yeah, that's not a problem GI-Land ever had. We already have high standards here and hope, that they are compatible to those...how to put it? 'New' standards.
... Anyway I see, we've got a basis on what to talk about more in detail. May I invite you personally for a state visit to GI-Land? We'll get the chance to talk personally to each other, maybe have some lunch and you can learn more about us. You would even get to choose, what parts of GI-Land would interest you the most, apart from Atlantis, what you would visit anyway. Do you think, that's possible, maybe around the end of February or so?"

"The cook of the Königspalast, the place, where I live, is of course very good. If you would like more to visit something of a GI-Landian citizen, there are good fish restaurants in Angelhaven or Südtor and some restaurants for traditional GI-Landian, but a bit more heavy meals, in Gianlucastadt e.g. as well as in Tragas."
