The Treecuu Way
#21

Sector 13

"Are you sure that's the correct translation?" Tiro grimaced. "Who would name a ship 'Bragging Steak'? Anyway, com, send the following:

Understood. A friendly diplomatic advice to the ships headed (525,574) - which is Treecuu space. We do not want any accidents due to misinterpreting the intentions with your approach. I, as the Special Treecuu Emissary to the Venterran Federation, would be more than happy to relay any messages you may have to that area, or provide you with the information you hope to obtain there."

Emperor Julianus raised a craggy brow at the sight of the gift, but gratefully nodded as he took it in his free hand.

"It is rather lovely.  I shall keep it in a place of honor, Emissary Teemas.  I am touched by this gesture.  The fact that you trust me with this treasure brings joy to my heart."

The relatively young Drakari smiled and motioned to his retinue, one of whom approached the Treecu woman and offered her what appeared to be a beautifully forged longsword (by her standards no doubt), rubies and gold filigree laid into the the hilt, the blade shimmering brightly with a pattern of flames running down it's length.

"Blades of this make are typically given to dignitaries and visitors to our homeworld.  They are forged from the finest and strongest alloys on the planet.  May it mark the beginning of peaceful relations between our nations."

Physical education was important in the Treecuu society, and being able to defend yourself in hand-to-hand combat was its most important implementation. Teemas hadn't exactly excelled in the self-defence courses, but she remembered the correct way of inspecting weapons of this kind. She respectfully accepted the sword with a slight bow. Holding it level with both hands, she first inspected the edges, then she gently bended it. Then she tested its balance by alternating her grip, careful not to drop it.

"It is exquisite, Emperor. It will be the first object to be displayed at the new centre for external affairs on Ecteen, the capital world, a historical and symbolic object from the first civilisation we have formal diplomatic relations with. A truly historical event. We hope you will consider establishing an embassy there one day."

"I will see what I can do about that, Emissary.  I extend a similar offer to you as well.  All of the embassies of the Protectorate Races and other states are within the vicinity of the Palace.  It would be wonderful to have another member of the galactic community as a neighbor."

Protectorate Races? Having an embassy among lowly subjects wouldn't fly well with the Senate, but that wasn't her problem. Yet.

"Near the Palace? What an honour, Emperor. I will relay Your offer to the Senate."

She imagined what a similar arrangement with the subject species in the Treecuu Empire would be like. Having people like the avians of Bicaan flying around near the Senate was an amusing thought, a great joke she would save for the crew of her ship.

Julianus gave Teemas an excitable, toothy grin and motioned to a skycar nearby.  "I am glad to hear it, Emissary Teemas.  Shall we continue this discussion in the throne room?  We can get to know each other on the way to the Imperial Palace if you wish."

Cassian, the Emperor's Aide-De-Camp, politely coughed into his talons.  "Need I remind you that the Ambassador to the Sosa Republic is also wanting to speak to you about his petition, your Grace?"

"Ah... the more the merrier, I say."  The Emperor's smile grew, practically reflecting his enthusiasm and relative youth for his species.

Teemes smiled and answered. "I would like that very much, Emperor."

45 Minutes from the Present

Fleet Admiral Kensei looked puzzled as he read the translated message from the Treecu Emissary. Looking over at his display he calmly asked, “Are you sure the Xenolinguists correctly translated the message? This reads like a threat to our main force.” Himiko shrugged as she replied, “The Software is still in the beta stages, but it is safe to say that they know of our destination and will warn the occupiers of Admiral Kobayashi’s Arrival.” “I see, then for now there is no need to let the treecu know of the location of our main forces, and to disregard the message for now.” murmured Kensei before the Comms officer spoke, “Sir, there’s an incoming transmission addressed to you sir.” “Is the transmission secure?” “Yes, Sir. The Transmission is encrypted by the Zero Cipher.” “Very well, patch it through to my private cabins in five.” Kensei said as he rose from his seat and headed towards the Captain’s Quarters.

20 Minutes from the Present

Rear Admiral Izana Kobayashi sighed as she sat alone in the bridge keeping watch with Archer while the crew ate in the mess hall. The Combined Fleet had taken precautions before jumping into slipspace. These precautions included masking their overall radiation emitted by the Horikoshi-Caproni Slipspace Drive to make it appear as if it was just one giant ship, docking smaller ships to larger ships to hide them from radar/radar equivalent, and ensuring that their less menacing ships took the lead to gauge their arrogance. She had also decided on a meandering route to throw off their trackers which delayed their estimated arrival time by a good 24 hours. ‘Hopefully the people of Yim III could hold out for two more days.’ She thought as the ship hurtled across slip space towards Yim III.

Present

Fleet Commander Kensei was seen looking shocked as he returned to his post on the Himiko’s Revenge. “Did something happen sir?” asked Himiko. “Yes, the Ceres Council* wants to meet the Treecu… Which means we’ll need them on this ship.” Replied Kensei. “I guess we should be honored that the Federation’s top leadership saw fit to message a lowly fleet commander just to set up an intergalactic conference call. Fleet Commander Kensei, Gofer of Ceres Council.”  Joked Himiko. “That’s Fleet Commander Gofer to you Computer.” Countered Kensei “In any case I’m not going to risk the lives of my crew just to comply with their orders. We might as well play the part of the ignorant pirate hunter who happens to receive new orders”. Regaining his composure, he asked, “What is our ETA Himiko?” “2 minutes sir,” replied the AI. “Excellent,” said Kensei as he watched the bridge crew start the process to exit slipspace.

The space 3 kilometers away from the Treecu’s vessel crackled to life. The distortion was barely noticeable in the inky black void as it crackled and shifted matter until it formed a small sphere the size of a baseball. The small sphere seemingly collapsed in on itself before it released a violent shockwave expanding at an incredible rate before stabilizing as a large sphere.

From the dark sphere, a Massive Warship slowly materialized into the Treecu vessel’s view. The massive vessel was the opposite of the Treecu in every sense of the way. It was blocky, and inelegant to the eyes of the beholder. The hull of the vessel was splotched with blast marks and dents caused by battles of old. However, despite its crude appearance the Vessel was not what it seemed. After the vessel exited the sphere, a second smaller vessel exited the cruiser. The Second vessel was triangular, and unlike the larger ship did not have any blaster marks or dents on the hull.
The “Two vessels” cruised lazily towards the Treecu vessels when Commander Kensei spoke on open frequencies, “Attention Treecu Vessel, Taam Yim. This is the Assault Carrier Himiko’s Revenge. Our leaders have expressed an interest in meeting with you. However, there are certain procedural matters that need to be dispensed with. What is your business with the 501st Strike Fleet of the Venterran Navy? Depending upon your answer we will either treat you as diplomats or as hostile prisoners. I recommend that you speak honestly and choose your words carefully."

The Ceres Council is the 12 ruling Administrative Governors elected by the 12 administrations of the Venterran Federation and 1 President who is elected by a popular vote. Unlike the Venterran Council which handles legislation and day to day activities, the Governors are bureaucrats who enforce the laws passed by the Venterran Council and also foreign policy. Only one member of the Council may reveal their face to the general public at any time (Except the President who serves as the face of the Federation).

Julianus strode over to the skycar, a guard opening the door and revealing a comfortable and well-lit interior that was undoubtedly spacious by Drakari standards.  The pilot sat in the front, waiting for his passengers.

"Come, Emissary," Julianus said warmly as he stepped inside, "the Palace awaits.  We can discuss matters of state or scientific trivia on the way there.  I very much would like to hear of your method of FTL."

The Taam Yim assumed a posture intended to look casual, not taking action to reduce the hull area exposed to the Venterran ships. Tiro answered the message from the Himiko’s Revenge.

"This is the frigate Taam Yim of the Treecuu Star Empire. I am special emissary Tiro. We are on a diplomatic mission to establish contact with the Venterran Federation, as per the new foreign policy of the Senate. We have estimated that your fleet, designated by you as the 501st, is the closest Venterran presence. I can assure you that you have nothing to fear from the Treecuu Star Empire. There will not be any hostilities between us unless you choose to initiate them. We wish to contact your officially recognised political government."

Tiro managed to keep a neutral tone, despite the upset atmosphere on the bridge. The Treecuu were mostly used to dealing with the subdued civilisations within the Empire, called subject species, and they rarely dared to threaten their overlords.

Captain Eeract clenched his fists. "Com, have the ships approaching the Yim-Lootuu System stopped or altered course?"

"They have either masked or are outside the range of our sensors" responded the officer at the communications console.

"Has Command stopped relaying their echoes from our long-range assets?"

"Affirmative."

"That can only mean that they either have lost lock or don't want to reveal continuous tracking by relaying the information to us."

Tiro raised one hand to interrupt the bridge officers.

"Don't forget you're on a diplomatic mission now. Our military will deal with them as they see fit."
