On 5 November, the war had begun with a formal declaration from the Valkyrian National Assembly. For the first time in its young history, the Valkyrian Republic was at war—with the Union of Hystaiga. When the country was last at war, it had existed as the Republic of Qvait in a conflict against Sporaltryus during the Great War of 2014. Valkyrian Chancellor Stella Kaufman had blamed Hystaigan Supreme Voice Blisse Starke for the downing of a Valkyrian fighter jet in October and the Stockholm chemical attack that killed nearly 200 people in June. Before the declaration vote was held, Defence Secretary Elena Haig had given several orders to the military leadership, mobilising the Valkyrian Defence Forces for war.

On the other side of the border, the Supreme Voice knew that war was imminent. In a speech before the Hystaigan Legislative Council, Starke warned that the country will be invaded soon. As the Valkyrians were declaring war, the Hystaigans reciprocated by naming Starke as Chief Defender of the Realm, giving her emergency wartime powers to command the Defence Force at will. At Starke's order, the Defence Minister prepared the military for a defensive against the Valkyrians. The war has begun.

Excerpts from leaders' speeches:

In June, our nation was attacked by an enemy that knows no morals. Today, we will strike back against the enemy with the iron first of freedom. And when we are done, safety and security will be assured in our great homeland. Long live Valkyria and the Valkyrian people.

— Stella Kaufman, Chancellor of the Valkyrian Republic

Soon, we will be fighting an enemy that fought us before. Half a century ago, they tried to conquer us—to enslave us. My fellow Hystaigans, we will resist their tyranny and stand up for our rights and freedoms and we will defend the motherland, same as our predecessors.

— Blisse Starke, Supreme Voice of the Union of Hystaiga

Perspectives from two soldiers' journal entries:

The Hystaigans are cowards for what they have done. They killed my Ela, so I will kill them. Vengeance is justice and justice will be done.

— Captain Morgan Thornton, soldier of the Valkyrian Republic Special Operations Group (VRSOG)
5 November 2019

The Valkyrians are blaming us for an attack we didn't commit. The gods will cast fire upon this world until there is justice, but there will never be justice with this war.

— Lieutenant Commander Treye Kingslee, soldier of the Hystaigan Elitzgardun (Elite Guard Unit)

Chapter 1 | A war in the motherland
Tuesday, 5 November 2019

News article: "Valkyria invades eastern border of Hystaiga" (The Karelia Chronicle)

The war had begun, but the Hystaigan Defence Force had been mobilised days in advance to respond to invasion by land in the east and by water in the west. Hystaigan military strategists knew that an invasion would likely first come by land because the Valkyrians would need days for their ships to arrive on the Hystaigan coast. Several military formations had been relocated to the east to defend against the Valkyrian Defence Forces, especially the Hystaigan National Gendarmerie.

The National Gendarmerie sent Rigala Kompanie (transl. "Reaper Company") of the Elitzgardun (transl. "Elite Guard Unit") as their chief special operations unit in the east. Their leader was Lieutenant Commander Treye Kingslee. At 34 years of age, Kingslee has served in the National Gendarmerie for ten years and underwent six years of special military and police training at the War College of the University of Karelia, where he earned a master's degree in mechanical engineering.

Lieutenant Commander Treye Kingslee

Having grown up in Karelia, Treye was fathered by Enzi Kingslee, a veteran of the 1950s war against Qvait. In the 1950s, Qvait was led by the fascist Chief Marshall Fallen, who ordered the invasion of Hystaiga, which resulted in ethnic cleansing that killed nearly 150,000 Hystaigans. This conflict is the root of Hystaigan distrust of today's Valkyrians, whose history is inextricably tied to the fascist dictatorship of the 20th century. To the Kingslees and many other Hystaigans, the new Valkyrian government represents the same values of yesteryear.

For this generation of military age Hystaigans, they have never seen war, but many have heard the stories of their parents and grandparents, who now dread the future as much as they dread the past. History has repeated itself and those who are able to fight have been called upon by Supreme Voice Blisse Starke to defend the old and young, who are incapable of defending themselves. Since the 1950s war, many Hystaigans have been prideful of their own nation and have the spirit to fight for it, no matter the cost. Treye Kingslee is one of those Hystaigans.

Chapter 2 | A story of vengeance
Friday, 8 November 2019

Soundtrack: "Avenger" by Toshio Masuda

On the night of 13 June, Ela Westborough walked into a nightclub in Stockholm with her friends for a hen party. However, she would never walk out of the nightclub. Instead, she was carried out by National Gendarmerie soldiers wearing hazmat suits. That night, her family and fiance Morgan Thornton were informed of her death by the National Police. Like many other families, they waited months for answers. Thornton and Westborough's family wanted the police to tell them who was responsible for the attack, but no answer would come. However, the director of the Intelligence Directorate-General informed Chancellor Stella Kaufman in October that Hystaiga was the most likely perpetrator of the attack. And so, the Chancellor informed the families of the victims of this.

Thornton was infuriated and told Kaufman that he wanted justice for his fiance. Twenty years a soldier, Thornton is part of the Valkyrian Republic Special Operations Group (VRSOG), whose existence was not publicly acknowledged until September 2018. According to former defence secretary Julia Burns, the VRSOG is said to be the most elite military unit of the Valkyrian Defence Forces, succeeding Neptune Group, which had been the most elite military unit of the Qvaitican Republic since the unit's founding in 1985. The members of the VRSOG come from the various special operations units of the VDF who have amassed years of experience and leadership. They are supposed to represent the strongest and smartest of the Valkyrian people. Thornton was one of the people chosen to represent them.

Captain Morgan Thornton

Before he was part of the VRSOG, Captain Thornton was a member of Neptune Group, which was the special operations unit of the Qvaitican Navy. With his naval knowledge, his unit was attached to the naval invasion of Hystaiga instead of being part of the ground offensive. However, the Hystaigans were prepared for a naval invasion, so a naval conflict was going to occur in international waters far, far away from either country near the southern edge of Cordilia. The Hystaigan Navy was determined to prolong the Valkyrian naval effort to prevent the enemy from reaching Karelia, the coastal city that served as Hystaiga's capital. For if the Valkyrians take Karelia, Hystaiga will have lost the war.

In the Great War of 2014, Neptune Group used methods to evade the destructive nature of sonar to plant bombs and sabotage Sporaltryan naval vessels, but this strategy could not be used against the Hystaigans because the world learned of it. This time, the naval conflict would be between ships, submarines, and aircraft in order to determine who had the greater will to fight. For both sides, this war was an existential battle, so that will to fight was great for everyone. This was a test of their resolve and Thornton was prepared to exact vengeance upon those who killed his fiance. In the middle of this naval conflict, Thornton was prepared to board Hystaigan vessels and fight the crew on the ships. Load up!

Chapter 3 | A story of dissent
Friday, 8 November 2019

Soundtrack: "The Streets of Whiterun" by Jeremy Soule

There was only one party in the Valkyrian Parliament that unanimously opposed the war with Hystagia and that was the Socialist Party. The person who spearheaded the opposition was Deputy Leader Steve Bennett, a veteran of the Great War of 2014. While there are those who hail him as a hero of the war, Bennett opposed the war with Sporaltryus and called it "a petty war of ideology that led to the unnecessary death of many people". Before the vote on declaring war on Hystaiga came, Bennett gave a 33 minute speech on the floor of the National Assembly explaining why a conflict with Hystaiga would be irresponsible. Bennett said, "As far as I can tell, a war with Hystaiga would be unjust and unlawful because we do not know with absolute certainty that they wronged us."

Despite his best efforts, Bennett could not successfully prevent the declaration of war. As soon as the declaration passed, conscription was activated and the deputy leader's daughter, Lucilla Bennett, was called upon to serve in the Valkyrian Defence Forces. Now, Lucilla was a lieutenant in the Valkyrian Ground Service, but she will undergo three months of basic training before being deployed in combat. At 19 years of age, she was a second year student at the University of Stockholm and studying biochemistry. Lucilla's dreams have been put on hold "for the greater good of the country" but she doesn't believe in the war she is about to fight in. Like her father, she opposes the war and is a member of the Young Socialists, who have been actively protesting against the war.

Second lieutenant Lucilla Bennett

However, Lucilla Bennett has no intention of dishonouring her conscription and will attend basic training. This decision was difficult for her to accept, because the political ramifications were great no matter what choice she made. If she were to dishonour her conscription, Lucilla and her father would be seen as traitors by many, especially by Steve Bennett's political opponents in Stockholm, who are looking for any opportunity to discredit him. However, by honouring the conscription, Lucilla is going to fight in a war that she does not support, much like her father in the Great War of 2014. She will be risking her life for a cause that she does not believe in and questions the intentions of the military leaders involved in the war effort.

Before heading off to training, Lucilla told her father to "do everything in [his] power" to end the war, but also said not to intervene to prevent her from serving in combat missions. In Steve's eyes, he believed that his daughter intended to become a martyr and expressed this to her. However, Lucilla denied the claim by saying, "I do not intend to go to Valhalla so soon because my mission in life is to become a biochemist and find the cures to diseases that no one else have yet discovered. I don't want to die. I want to do what you do every day, which is fighting to build a better world. One day, this war will end and I will return to my mission. So, please do not worry too much about me and fight for everyone who needs you right now."

Chapter 4 | A will to fight
Tuesday, 12 November 2019

Soundtrack: "Soundscape to Ardor" by Shirō Sagisu

It has been a week since the Kalkara War began and a week since fighting began in the borderlands that divide Hystaiga and Valkyria. Despite the effort of the Hystaigans, the Valkyrians have been gaining ground in eastern Hystaiga, seizing control of half of the border city of Kashkarra. In one week, the Hystaigans have lost 212 of their soldiers and the Valkyrians have lost 89 of theirs. In Rigala Kompanie, the Hystaigan special operations unit under the leadership of Lieutenant Commander Treye Kingslee, they have lost three of their comrades in the Battle of Kashkarra. In this unit, it is tradition to wrap a purple cloth around the heads of fallen comrades, completely concealing their faces. In death, they are still Reapers.

Funeral arrangements were made for the deceased, but the battle raged on without a ceasefire. Day and night, the battle was being fought in a city that had once been home to 20,000 people. Many evacuated before the conflict began, but there were a couple hundred people who did not heed the warning to evacuate. They were the most vulnerable people in this war and civilian casualties have occurred. As far as the Hystaigan government knows, at least 27 civilians have died in this war already, but that number is expected to rise every day. The Hystaigan military is not only fighting a war against the Valkyrians, but there are several units that have been given orders to help evacuate the civilians in Kashkarra, which is unsurprisingly difficult.

Lieutenant Commander Treye Kingslee

The battle has taken a toll on Kingslee, who personally knew the three comrades in Rigala Kompanie who died in the past week. In the presence of his comrades, he gave inspirational and motivational speeches to help them continue fighting and defending the motherland, but in his heart, he was saddened by the losses in this war. He very much wanted to grieve, but there was never going to be enough time for that. In order to keep the morale of his comrades up, he had no choice but to bottle his emotions and maintain an outward appearance of strength. Any modern psychologist would agree that this is harmful to one's mental health and Kingslee knew this. Nevertheless, this was the choice he made for the benefit of the unit.

Chapter 5 | There are no heroes and there is no honour
Thursday, 26 December 2019

Soundtrack: "Ain't No Sunshine" by Bill Withers

Nearly two months have passed since the start of the Kalkara War and a ceasefire still has not been reached. There was hope that one would be reached by the summer solstice, but the Valkyrians have no interest in relenting. The Valkyrians have pushed beyond Kashkarra and is slowly but surely marching its way to the Hystaigan capital. There has been loss of life on both sides of this conflict and the death toll has increased to 8,500 on both sides, including Hystaigan civilians. There have been accusations on both sides that the laws of war have been violated and civilians were being used as human shields. One thing was clear: there were no heroes and there was no honour.

Lieutenant Commander Treye Kingslee managed to survive the autumn, but it was clear that his forces were not fighting a winning effort and the Valkyrians were on the offensive. He has endured massive loss of life on his end, watching civilian families mourn their losses and sending deceased comrades off to their funerals. The way he saw the war was one of survival—not one that could be won. In private, Kingslee wept for his comrades and his country, feeling hopeless in being able to defend either. More and more, the war was uncontrollably eating away at his soul and Kingslee was helpless.

Even though Valkyria was winning the ground offensive, they had to recall their naval forces on the southern end of Cordilia. The Hystaigan Navy was able to stave off a naval invasion and protect their capital. This was much to the chagrin of Captain Morgan Thornton, who wanted to push through the enemy's naval fleet without regard for the loss of human life, deeming them to be necessary sacrifices for the greater good of the country. Instead, he was called back to the mainland and was going to take a month's reprieve before going back into the war to join the ground offensive. Needless to say, he saw this reprieve as a waste of time.

On the outskirts of Sydney, Second lieutenant Lucilla Bennett was nearly two months into her training and told by instructors that her class would join the war effort as soon as 15 February. Her parents were furious that she was going to be sent to fight in a war that none of them believed in and her father Steve made that clear in Parliament back in Stockholm. As expected, some in Parliament—especially those in The New Right—and conservative political commentators have called him a "traitor" for making these statements. Even though he is seen as the most unpopular member of Parliament, he is not relenting in his opposition to the war.

Chapter 6 | The key to the capital
Saturday, 15 February 2020

Soundtrack: "Empires" by Ruelle

The political and military leadership of Valkyria were repeating the same three words in February. Victory is near. Reassurances were made that the end of the Kalkara War was in sight, but 1,387 Valkyrian soldiers had already died and thousands more were returning home with injuries and scars that they will have to bear for the rest of their lives. The real question was: is victory actually near or is this a matter of keeping morale high? Only time can tell the answer to this question.

Regardless of the answer, Captain Morgan Thornton's reprieve and Second lieutenant Lucilla Bennett's training ended and they were now going to join the ground offensive in the war. Needless to say, Thornton was impatient during this time and wanted nothing more than to fire his gun. On the other hand, Bennett was anxious and did not have much of a will to fight in a war that she did not believe in. Nevertheless, she was going to fight.

The Valkyrian Defence Forces were making steady progress in their march toward the Hystaigan capital. Midway into February, they were now just within 100 kilometres of Karelia. If the Valkyrians want any chance of seizing the capital, they must first take the city of Dystalia, which was situated only 54 kilometres away from Karelia. Valkyrian military strategists have told the chancellor that Dystalia is the only suitable location to establish a forward operating base in their quest to take Karelia.

Dystalia is the key to the capital.

Chapter 7 | A man on his own
Sunday, 16 February 2020

Soundtrack: "Hurts Like Hell" by Fleurie

The war was crushing his soul. Lieutenant commander Treye Kingslee was fighting a losing battle that was costing the lives of comrades he had known for years, but they were not the only people he lost in this war. Kingslee was raised as a single child by a single parent after his mother, Elena, died when he was only three years old due to complications from a malignant brain tumour. For the young soldier, he grew up with his father, Enzi, who was the only family he had.

On 16 February, Treye's father died from pneumonia in Karelia, where he was unable to receive adequate medical care due to a shortage of medical resources. The news of his father's death was unbearable for Treye, who felt guilt for not being by his father's side. Publicly, Treye would present himself in a confident manner, but inside, he was falling into a deep depressive state of self-pity and anguish. He could not believe that his country, his friends, and his family were all being taken away.

Some of Kingslee's surviving comrades who have known him for years knew that there was depression behind that confident facade and tried to assure him that they have his back, but those assurances were unsuccessful in giving Kingslee any real measure of confidence. Nevertheless, Rigala Kompanie continued to fight against the Valkyrian threat to the motherland. Kingslee needed to be a leader for his unit and find a way to save his country.

Whatever it takes.

Chapter 8 | The truth of war
Sunday, 16 February 2020

Soundtrack: "All Gone (No Escape)" by Gustavo Santaolalla

Second lieutenant Lucilla Bennett was assigned to the 2nd Armoured Division, 3rd Armoured Brigade, 9th Infantry Regiment of the Valkyrian Ground Service. Her squad was particularly eager to join the battle, but she was the most hesitant among them. Much like her father, Lucilla was opposed to the war and those in her unit were aware that her father is Socialist leader Steve Bennett. With this being known, Bennett's position in the military was a precarious one.

The commanding officer of the unit, Sergeant Daniel Pereira, privately spoke with each member of the unit, urging them not make any inappropriate remarks about Bennett or her father. In spite of this warning, some ignored the sergeant and called her a "traitor's daughter" behind her back. They made remarks unbecoming of the spirit of camaraderie in the Valkyrian Defence Forces, but they were unlikely to be punished by their superiors for their actions.

En route to the city of Dystalia, Bennett looked out to the countryside of Hystaigan farmers having lost their livelihoods due to the war. It was evident that tanks and other armoured vehicles drove through their crops and they were left with low quality produce that were worth next to nothing in local markets. Driving through small towns, Bennett stared into the faces of men, women, and children who were starving and desperately waiting in line to receive rations from the Valkyrian military.

Looking down at her assault rifle, Bennett was truly beginning to question whether it was the right decision to honour her conscription. Seeing how the war has caused despair for the Hystaigan people, she felt guilt and did not feel any pride in being a Valkyrian. As a teenager, Bennett looked up to Margaret Harrison as being a champion of peace, freedom, and democracy in Valkyria and around the world. Now, she was questioning what ideals Valkyria is standing for today.

Valkyria does not stand for peace, freedom, or democracy anymore.

Chapter 9 | Sacrifices had to be made
Monday, 17 February 2020

Soundtrack: "Break the Wheel" by Ramin Djawadi

Hystaigans were taking heavy losses in armoured warfare against the Valkyrians. Many were losing their lives in prototype tanks supplied by an obscure arms company from Termina. There were reports of these tanks catching fire and burning the crew alive while they were trapped inside and other reports of malfunctions that gave them a fatal disadvantage against their Valkyrian enemy. When Supreme Voice Blisse Starke caught wind of these prototype tanks, she was furious with the defence minister.

The Supreme Voice walked into Arza Bente's office at the defence ministry unannounced to question him about the tanks. The defence minister confessed to meeting with Point Rain Armories to facilitate an arms deal that would provide Hystaiga the tanks to do battle. When Starke asked what he bargained for the arms deal, he hesitated to respond. In acquiring the tanks and other munitions, Bente signed away Hystaigan land for resource extraction.

The Supreme Voice was livid after hearing what the defence minister gave away. She scolded him for bargaining Hystaiga's sovereignty to a foreign power and demanded his immediate resignation, "When the dust settles on this war, the Hystaigan people will know your betrayal." Bente was forcibly removed from the building and Starke informed the deputy defence minister that he was acting minister. However, the damage had already been done. The Supreme Voice needed to find a way to turn the tide of war.

How?

Chapter 10 | No surrender
Friday, 17 April 2020

Soundtrack: "Sarabande" by National Philharmonic Orchestra

The Hystaigan capital of Karelia was overrun by the Valkyrian Defence Forces. Several thousand Hystaigan soldiers gave their lives in an effort to protect their capital and their leader, Supreme Voice Blisse Starke, who refused to leave her office and form a government-in-exile. Like the captain of a sinking ship, Starke stayed in her quarters. She had no intention of surrendering in this war and made this position clear to the Hystaigan Defence Force, calling on all surviving elements of the military to form a resistance against the Valkyrian occupiers. Unbeknownst to many, Starke already named the leader of the Resistance—Imani Colbrunn.

Colbrunn served in the Hystaigan Special Forces as an Elitzgardun general tasked to lead Rigala Kompanie and well respected by his peers and subordinates. His appointment as the central military leader of an armed resistance made him a source of appeal to Hystaigans who wanted to continue fighting the Valkyrians. At 17:09, Starke was in the custody of SIEGE, a hybrid Valkyrian military-police agency with special powers granted by ESPA 19. The Supreme Voice was now being held in a jail controlled by the Valkyrians.

Supreme Voice Blisse Starke

Meanwhile, Rigala Kompanie was plotting the liberation of their nation from Valkyrian occupation and Treye Kingslee was given a battlefield promotion to captain, skipping the commander rank. While the Valkyrian political leadership was proclaiming victory against the "Hystaigan terrorists", the Reapers were preparing to execute their Supreme Voice's order that will prolong the Kalkara War. This war is far from over.

Chapter 11 | The Fyrerun
Wednesday, 7 April 2021

Soundtrack: "Superman Rising, Pt. 2 / Immovable" by Tom Holkenborg

"Let the fire run." At a moment's notice, the Resistance received the go-ahead for a mass rebellion against the Valkyrian occupiers. Ordinary Hystaigans, alongside dispersed elements of Rigala Kompanie, launched attacks across the nation against checkpoints, outposts, and bases controlled by the Valkyrian Defence Forces and SIEGE. At a Hystaigan police headquarters in Karelia that was converted into a Valkyrian military operations centre, masked rebels threw Molotovs at the building, grabbed and beaten a few Valkyrian soldiers to death, and overturned military vehicles in the car park.

Other tales of rebelliousness developed throughout the nation as Hystaigans across the country revolted against the occupation. At a rural Valkyrian checkpoint, a suicide bomber drove a car up toward the soldiers before detonating the explosive. Sex workers in Dystalia lured several Valkyrian soldiers before stabbing them with knives. Out of national frustration and anger, the Hystaigan people unleashed a massive act of resistance resulting in the Kalkara War's bloodiest day, with more than 15,000 people dying on 7 April throughout Hystaiga.

In Karelia, the Resistance stormed the prison holding Blisse Starke, who had been indefinitely detained by the Valkyrians for nearly a year, liberating the Supreme Voice and other members of the Resistance. In a video uploaded to social media, Starke spoke about her experiences while imprisoned, accusing the Valkyrians of torturing her and her fellow Hystaigans and committing crimes against humanity. She also applauded the Resistance's efforts, promising that "Hystaiga will be a nation once again".

Chapter 12 | A promise broken
Wednesday, 7 April 2021

Soundtrack: "Todokanu Hito Ni" by Lars Sørensen

Second lieutenant Lucilla Bennett

"One day, this war will end, and I will return to my mission." Second lieutenant Lucilla Bennett promised her parents that she would return from the war to continue her life's goal. She did not want her parents to worry about her, but her parents were always worried about their daughter. Lucilla did not believe in the war; she was conscripted to fight this war. Against her parents' wishes, the Valkyrian government called upon all military-age citizens to serve in the war. With each passing day, Valkyrian families were suffering the consequences of the war. Many were mourning the loss of their loved ones. While many saw their children as heroes, some saw their children as victims of an unjust and unlawful war.

On the morning of 7 April, Lucilla Bennett was dispatched to the urban quarter of Dystalia, just 54 kilometres away from the Hystaigan capital, where her comrades were pinned down by enemy gunfire. The objective of her unit was to extract them to safety. However, the Resistance was not going to make it easy for the Valkyrian Defence Forces. The second lieutenant's unit was travelling in enough armoured personnel carriers (APC) to carry up to 75 soldiers. When the unit arrived on the scene, some provided suppressive fire while others ran to extract the wounded. Bennett was one of the latter, who raced into one of the two buildings that the soldiers were taking shelter in. She managed to rescue five wounded soldiers before she was shot.

Bennett fell to the ground, bleeding profusely from her neck. Another soldier saw what happened and ran to her position, applying pressure to her wound. He called for help, and another soldier ran over to help carry her into an APC. However, saving Bennett from her wound was impossible, and she died from major blood loss. The time of death was forty minutes after midnight on Wednesday, 7 April 2021. In Steve and Margaret Bennett's eyes, their daughter was seen by the Valkyrian government as nothing more than a statistic. Today, they will learn that their daughter was killed.

...

"I want to do what you do every day, which is fighting to build a better world."
