Welcome to Treasure Island

Welcome to Treasure Island!

This is the roleplay section of the South Pacific, and arguably the one place on the forum where you might have the most fun. We are a friendly bunch and love to roleplay and experiment with different things in this world we have created throughout the last couple of years, and we would be more than happy to have you join our community and make your own contributions to the region. We understand that getting involved might be a bit daunting at first, but hopefully reading this thread and asking some questions will help you get a decent grasp of how to do things around here.

ROLEPLAY STANDARDS

Our regional canon is modern tech. That means all our official roleplays use technology similar to whatever already exists in the real world. However, we also roleplay in a universe different to that of the real world, meaning you cannot use real life maps to describe your nation or events like European colonisation to describe your national history. Similarly, avoid using the statistics from NationStates when providing data about your nation. Try to be as original as possible.

But what if you do want to start a roleplay where everything happens in the real world? You can always do that, just remember that it will not be part of the official regional history. There is nothing wrong with that anyway, and chances are everyone who participates will have lots of fun. The same applies if you want to start or participate in roleplays that are not modern tech or are not meant to be part of the regional canon.

One longstanding rule from our roleplay community is that whoever starts a thread is free to determine its rules. If you start a roleplay, you are free to decide if anyone can participate or it only certain people are invited, you can decide if certain kinds of posts are not allowed, and can ask for moderators to remove posts that break your thread rules.

Another thing to take into account is that there is a different between posting in-character (IC) and posting out-of-character (OOC). We will all be posting as different characters, with different personalities. It is important to remember that no matter how disgusting a character might seem, the person behind the computer should always be treated with respect. We all want to have fun, and being respectful helps us achieve that goal.

CANON HISTORY

We briefly mentioned the regional canon in the previous section. But what is it?

The regional canon is the list of events that have been roleplayed and agreed upon by the different users, in order to have a consistent in-character regional history. In simple words, the canon is our official regional history. We continually build on top of that history with new roleplays, and use it to influence the course of our future history.

Our regional canon might be slightly complicated to understand at first, but all our active roleplayers are very friendly and would be happy to walk you through the basics. In the meantime, here are some basic events that you should know:
  • Great War (1949-1954): major conflict caused by the assassination of the Karnetvor Crown Prince and Princess, fought by Karnetvor, Noctenos and Tekarai on the Imperial side and Sporaltryus, Ryccia, Ubesii and Sedunn on the Allied side. It resulted in an Imperial defeat and the rise of the Sporaltryus-Ryccia rivalry.
  • Sporaltryan War (October 2014-January 2015): major conflict caused by ideological tensions, fought by Qvait and Ryccia on the Capitalist side and Sporaltryus, Bruuma, Darkstrait and Bonaugure on the Socialist side. It resulted in a stalemate and the sudden cease of hostilities.
  • Government Island Summit (June 2015-October 2015): meeting between Ryccia and the International Oversight Commission, a subsidiary body to the Southern Cooperation Organisation. It resulted in the signing of the Government Island Accord, an agreement to reduce the Ryccian nuclear arsenal, limit its future development and improve the human rights situation.
  • Crownsville Summit (September 2015): meeting between all major powers from the Southern Cooperation Organisation, United Front and Southern Socialist Union, to address the rising tensions with Ryccia. It prompted the accelerated conclusion of the Government Island Summit and the signing of its related Accord.
  • Sporaltryan Civil War: conflict between the Sporaltryan Government, a terrorist group called the Consortium and various rebel groups, which led to the Consortium detonating a nuclear weapon in Sporaltryus City and the temporary surrender of the Government, followed by its definitive fall on 9 October 2015, after widespread rebellions.
  • Ryccian Civil War: military coup after the signing of the Government Island Accord and the Nuclear Bombing of Sporaltryus City, which ended in the definitive dissolution of the Constitutional Monarchy on 11 October 2015, due to widespread rebellions.
  • Second War (October 2015): major conflict caused by tensions between Sporaltryan and Ryccian rebels that had overthrown their respective governments. This resulted in nuclear strikes against the capital cities of each other on 11 October 2015, which led to armed intervensions from the Southern Cooperation Organisation and the United Front, in order to confiscate the nuclear arsenals of both nations.
Similarly, these are some basic facts that you will want to keep in mind:
  • Our planet is called Pacifica. It is orbited by two moons called Maxima and Minima.
  • There are three large international organisations called the Southern Cooperation Organisation, the Southern Socialist Union and the United Front. Membership in any is not mutually exclusive, or even required. Countries are free to form other alliances and organisations among themselves.
  • You need to claim a plot on the official map in order to officially take part in canon roleplaying. Once you have made a claim, you should be good to go.
  • We have a Political Geography thread with different maps that show information about all nations. You can post there if you want information about your nation to be added to certain maps.
  • Like we said earlier, there are certain rules that apply to our roleplaying here in Treasure Island. You can find them here.
Our having one regional canon does not mean there cannot be alternative timelines. If you want to make an alternate timeline with different elements (like a version of our history where we developed faster-than-light travel), we really encourage you to do it and ask around to see if there is interest in the idea. It might be really fun!

FORUM STRUCTURE

Tortuga: this is where we have all discussions about the roleplay community itself and where people may post tools like the election simulator.

Bantam Harbour: this is where all the canon roleplays take place, including wars, presidential inaugurations and national histories. Threads in here can be both in-character and out-of-character.
  • Shipwreck Cove: this is where nations can hold diplomatic events and international organisations hold their meetings. You will mostly find national embassies and international summits.
  • Message in a Bottle: this is where all nations can post articles from their various newspapers. You will find threads where anyone can post short snippets or threads where you can exclusively post news from your own nation.
  • The Plank: this is where all nations can post their various national histories and information. You will find threads where people exclusively post about their national information and survey threads where everyone can answer a specific question with regards to their own nation.
  • Charts Repository: this is where you will find the official regional map and will be able to claim your own plot. You will also find national maps made by individual nations, and a guide on making your own map.
Knowhere: this is where all the non-canon roleplays take place, including alternative world roleplays and futuristic roleplays. This is where you would do anything not related to the main canon, based on the regional map. Threads in here can be both in-character and out-of-character.

In the case of non-canon roleplays, the same subforums will do, but make sure to state in your thread that the roleplay will not be canon, so there are no confusions. When in doubt, you can always ask in this thread.

ROLEPLAYING RESOURCES

Here are some threads posted by members from our roleplaying community. They contain useful resources and additional information on how to better participate in our regional canon:
  • Budget Making Guide: guide written by Resentine with some tips on how to structure a realistic national budget.
  • Election Simulator: a software coded by Farengeto that allows you to simulate campaigns and elections in your nation. It is regularly updated by him.
  • Logic Police: a thread where you can find answers to basic questions about realism with nation building and can ask all sorts of questions about realism with MT roleplay.
  • Roleplay Guide: guide written by Brutland and Norden with some tips about realism with national populations.
GETTING HELP

This is a very basic guide, but there is much more to know about our roleplay section. Your very first option should be to post here. We all frequently check this thread, and will be glad to answer any questions you might have. There are no stupid questions. If you still feel you need some guidance, you can send a private message to any of the following people, who actively roleplay here and are willing to answer all of your questions: If you have a question about a specific roleplay, you might want to ask instead the person who started the thread, or anyone who seems particularly active in that thread. If you have questions about the regional government or how to get involved in other aspects of our region, you might want to try the Fellowship Programme. If you have questions about the forum itself, you should head over to the Operations Centre, where forum administrators can answer your question.

Welcome and good luck!

Posts outside High Court venues should be taken as those of any other legislator.
I do not participate in the regional server, but I am happy to talk through instant messaging or on the forum.
